    Generating collaborative systems for digital libraries: A model-driven approach

Copyright @ 2010 The Authors.The design and development of a digital library involves different stakeholders, such as: information architects, librarians, and domain experts, who need to agree on a common language to describe, discuss, and negotiate the services the library has to offer. To this end, high-level, language-neutral models have to be devised. Metamodeling techniques favor the definition of domainspecific visual languages through which stakeholders can share their views and directly manipulate representations of the domain entities. This paper describes CRADLE (Cooperative-Relational Approach to Digital Library Environments), a metamodel-based framework and visual language for the definition of notions and services related to the development of digital libraries. A collection of tools allows the automatic generation of several services, defined with the CRADLE visual language, and of the graphical user interfaces providing access to them for the final user. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated by presenting digital libraries generated with CRADLE, while the CRADLE environment has been evaluated by using the cognitive dimensions framework

    Evaluation of Ingenol mebutate efficacy for the treatment of actinic keratosis with Antera 3D camera

    OBJECTIVE: Cumulative exposure of the skin to ultraviolet radiation promotes mutation in keratinocytes and their abnormal growth led to the formation of scaly lesions, called actinic keratoses (AKs). Its incidence is growing at an emerging rate, becoming a worldwide problem especially for occupational ultraviolet (UV) rays exposure. Detectable lesions are often associated with field changes, where the surrounding skin is altered and subclinical lesions may be present. Thus, a field-directed therapy, such as topical treatment, should be preferred for the prevention of invasive cancer development. A retrospective analysis was made, evaluating the efficacy of ingenol-mebutate gel, using a novel device the 3D in vivo optical skin Imaging (Antera 3D, Miravex, Ireland). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included all patients with multiple non-hypertrophic Aks, to whom it was prescribed ingenol-mebutate gel, applied at the dosages of 0.015 for lesions in the scalp/face (for 3 consecutive days) and at the dosage of 0.05% for lesions in the trunk and/or extremities (for 2 consecutive days). RESULTS: A reduction of the lesions and of median hemoglobin levels, after a follow-up of 60 days, was observed in 100% of patients. CONCLUSIONS: Ingenol mebutate gel, the last topical molecule appeared in the Italian market showed its efficacy using Antera 3D also in terms of hemoglobin reduction. Therefore, this camera could be considered an useful tool for the identification of the area to be treated and for therapeutic follow-up

    CLUSTER-TRANSFER REACTIONS WITH RADIOACTIVE BEAMS: A SPECTROSCOPIC TOOL FOR NEUTRON-RICH NUCLEI

    In this thesis work, an exploratory experiment to investigate cluster-transfer reactions with radioactive beams in inverse kinematics is presented. The aim of the experiment was to test the potential of cluster-transfer reactions at the Coulomb barrier, as a possible mean to perform spectroscopy studies of exotic neutron-rich nuclei at medium-high energies and spins. The experiment was performed at ISOLDE (CERN), employing the heavy-ion reaction 98Rb+7Li at 2.85 MeV/A. Cluster-transfer reaction channels were studied through particle-gamma coincidence measurements, using the MINIBALL Ge array coupled to the charged particle Si detectors T-REX. Sr, Y and Zr neutron-rich nuclei with A around100 were populated by either triton- or alpha-transfer from 7Li to the beam nuclei and the emitted complementary charged fragment was detected in coincidence with the gamma cascade of the residues, after few neutrons evaporation. The measured gamma spectra were studied in detail and the residue distributions were investigated as a function of the excitation energy and different spin distributions of the nuclei produced in the cluster-transfer process. Moreover, the reaction mechanism was qualitatively studied as a two-body process, considering the direct transfer of a cluster-like particle and using a Distorted Wave Born Approximation (DWBA). The results of this work show that cluster-transfer reactions can be well described as a direct process and that they could be considered for the population of neutron-rich nuclei at medium-high energies and spins. The same experimental technique can therefore be used in future experiments to study different exotic regions of the nuclides chart using radioactive ion beams of new generation

    Power-law decay in first-order relaxation processes

    Starting from a simple definition of stationary regime in first-order relaxation processes, we obtain that experimental results are to be fitted to a power-law when approaching the stationary limit. On the basis of this result we propose a graphical representation that allows the discrimination between power-law and stretched exponential time decays. Examples of fittings of magnetic, dielectric and simulated relaxation data support the results.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev. B; 4 figure

    Aerosol optical thickness retrieval from satellite observation using support vector regression

    Processing of data recorded by the MODIS sensors on board the Terra and Aqua satellites has provided AOT maps that in some cases show low correlations with ground-based data recorded by the AERONET. Application of SVR techniques to MODIS data is a promising, though yet poorly explored, method of enhancing the correlations between satellite data and ground measurements. The article explains how satellite data recorded over three years on central Europe are correlated in space and time with ground based data and then shows results of the application of the SVR technique which somewhat improves previously computed correlations. Hints about future work in testing different SVR variants and methodologies are inferred from the analysis of the results thus far obtained. © 2010 Springer-Verlag

    Perfluorodecaline residue in the anterior chamber of a patient with an intact crystalline lens: a case report

    Abstract Background Perfluorocarbon liquids are frequently used as intraoperative tools in vitreoretinal surgery and may occasionally be retained in the vitreous cavity. We report a patient who underwent pars plana vitrectomy for a giant tear after receiving blunt trauma to his right eye and sustained postoperative perfluorocarbon liquid residue in the anterior chamber in spite of an intact crystalline lens. Case presentation Perfluorodecaline was used as a temporary retinal tamponade. Three weeks after the surgery, a residue of heavy liquid was observed in the anterior chamber, even though the patient had an intact crystalline lens without any tilt or dislocation. The remnant of the heavy liquid was taken out of the anterior chamber immediately to avoid secondary complications. Conclusion Presence of heavy liquids in the anterior chamber may be associated with zonular defects even though the patient has an intact crystalline lens.</p

    Optical coherence tomography-based consensus definition for lamellar macular hole.

    BackgroundA consensus on an optical coherence tomography definition of lamellar macular hole (LMH) and similar conditions is needed.MethodsThe panel reviewed relevant peer-reviewed literature to reach an accord on LMH definition and to differentiate LMH from other similar conditions.ResultsThe panel reached a consensus on the definition of three clinical entities: LMH, epiretinal membrane (ERM) foveoschisis and macular pseudohole (MPH). LMH definition is based on three mandatory criteria and three optional anatomical features. The three mandatory criteria are the presence of irregular foveal contour, the presence of a foveal cavity with undermined edges and the apparent loss of foveal tissue. Optional anatomical features include the presence of epiretinal proliferation, the presence of a central foveal bump and the disruption of the ellipsoid zone. ERM foveoschisis definition is based on two mandatory criteria: the presence of ERM and the presence of schisis at the level of Henle's fibre layer. Three optional anatomical features can also be present: the presence of microcystoid spaces in the inner nuclear layer (INL), an increase of retinal thickness and the presence of retinal wrinkling. MPH definition is based on three mandatory criteria and two optional anatomical features. Mandatory criteria include the presence of a foveal sparing ERM, the presence of a steepened foveal profile and an increased central retinal thickness. Optional anatomical features are the presence of microcystoid spaces in the INL and a normal retinal thickness.ConclusionsThe use of the proposed definitions may provide uniform language for clinicians and future research

    Electrochemical Characterization of Charge Storage at Anodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries Based on Corncob Waste-Derived Hard Carbon and Binder

    Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) represent a potential alternative to lithium-ion batteries in large-scale energy storage applications. To improve the sustainability of SIBs, the utilization of anode carbonaceous materials produced from biomass and the selection of a bio-based binder allowing an aqueous electrode processing are fundamental. Herein, corncobs are used as raw material for the preparation of hard carbon and it is also used as cellulose sources for the synthesis of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) binder. The corncob-derived electrodes deliver a high discharge capacity of around 264 mAhg(-1) at 1 C (300 mAg(-1)), with promising capacity retention (84 % after 100 cycles) and good rate capability. Additionally, this work expands the fundamental insight of the sodium storage behavior of Hard Carbons through an electrochemical approach, suggesting that the reaction mechanism is controlled by capacitive process in the sloping voltage region, while the diffusion-controlled intercalation is the predominant process in the low-voltage plateau
