Hysteresis in the de Haas-van Alphen Effect
A hysteresis loop is observed for the first time in the de Haas-van Alphen
(dHvA) effect of beryllium at low temperatures and quantizing magnetic field
applied parallel to the hexagonal axis of the single crystal. The irreversible
behavior of the magnetization occurs at the paramagnetic part of the dHvA
period in conditions of Condon domain formation arising by strong enough dHvA
amplitude. The resulting extremely nonlinear response to a very small
modulation field offers the possibility to find in a simple way the Condon
domain phase diagram. From a harmonic analysis, the shape and size of the

Direct Observation of Condon Domains in Silver by Hall Probes
Using a set of micro Hall probes for the detection of the local induction,
the inhomogeneous Condon domain structure has been directly observed at the
surface of a pure silver single crystal under strong Landau quantization in
magnetic fields up to 10 T. The inhomogeneous induction occurs in the
theoretically predicted part of the H-T Condon domain phase diagram.
Information about size, shape and orientation of the domains is obtained by
analyzing Hall probes placed along and across the long sample axis and by
tilting the sample. On a beryllium surface the induction inhomogeneity is
almost absent although the expected induction splitting here is at least ten

Looming struggles over technology for border control
New technologies under development, capable of inflicting pain on masses of people, could be used for border control against asylum seekers. Implementation might be rationalized by the threat of mass migration due to climate change, nuclear disaster or exaggerated fears of refugees created by governments. We focus on taser anti-personnel mines, suggesting both technological countermeasures and ways of making the use of such technology politically counterproductive. We also outline several other types of ‘non-lethal’ technology that could be used for border control and raise human rights concerns: high-powered microwaves, armed robots, wireless tasers, acoustic devices/vortex rings, ionizing and pulsed energy lasers, chemical calmatives, convulsants, bioregulators and malodurants. Whether all these possible border technologies will be implemented is a matter for speculation, but their serious human rights implications warrant advance scrutiny
InAs-AlSb quantum wells in tilted magnetic fields
InAs-AlSb quantum wells are investigated by transport experiments in magnetic
fields tilted with respect to the sample normal. Using the coincidence method
we find for magnetic fields up to 28 T that the spin splitting can be as large
as 5 times the Landau splitting. We find a value of the g-factor of about 13.
For small even-integer filling factors the corresponding minima in the
Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations cannot be tuned into maxima for arbitrary tilt
angles. This indicates the anti-crossing of neighboring Landau and spin levels.
Furthermore we find for particular tilt angles a crossover from even-integer
dominated Shubnikov-de Haas minima to odd-integer minima as a function of
magnetic field
Effects of three-nucleon forces and two-body currents on Gamow-Teller strengths
We optimize chiral interactions at next-to-next-to leading order to
observables in two- and three-nucleon systems, and compute Gamow-Teller
transitions in carbon-14, oxygen-22 and oxygen-24 using consistent two-body
currents. We compute spectra of the daughter nuclei nitrogen-14, fluorine-22
and fluorine-24 via an isospin-breaking coupled-cluster technique, with several
predictions. The two-body currents reduce the Ikeda sum rule, corresponding to
a quenching factor q^2 ~ 0.84-0.92 of the axial-vector coupling. The half life
of carbon-14 depends on the energy of the first excited 1+ state, the
three-nucleon force, and the two-body current
Condon Domain Phase Diagram for Silver
We present the Condon domain phase diagram for a silver single crystal
measured in magnetic fields up to 28 T and temperatures down to 1.3 K. A
standard ac method with a pickup coil system is used at low frequency for the
measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect (dHvA). The transition point from
the state of homogeneous magnetization to the inhomogeneous Condon domain state
(CDS) is found as the point where a small irreversibility in the dHvA
magnetization arises, as manifested by an extremely nonlinear response in the
pickup voltage showing threshold character. The third harmonic content in the
ac response is used to determine with high precision the CDS phase boundary.
The experimentally determined Condon domain phase diagram is in good agreement
with the theoretical prediction calculated by the standard Lifshitz-Kosevich
(LK) formula
Semantic Sentiment Analysis of Twitter Data
Internet and the proliferation of smart mobile devices have changed the way
information is created, shared, and spreads, e.g., microblogs such as Twitter,
weblogs such as LiveJournal, social networks such as Facebook, and instant
messengers such as Skype and WhatsApp are now commonly used to share thoughts
and opinions about anything in the surrounding world. This has resulted in the
proliferation of social media content, thus creating new opportunities to study
public opinion at a scale that was never possible before. Naturally, this
abundance of data has quickly attracted business and research interest from
various fields including marketing, political science, and social studies,
among many others, which are interested in questions like these: Do people like
the new Apple Watch? Do Americans support ObamaCare? How do Scottish feel about
the Brexit? Answering these questions requires studying the sentiment of
opinions people express in social media, which has given rise to the fast
growth of the field of sentiment analysis in social media, with Twitter being
especially popular for research due to its scale, representativeness, variety
of topics discussed, as well as ease of public access to its messages. Here we

A Monte Carlo study of Inverse Symmetry Breaking
We make a Monte Carlo study of the coupled two-scalar
model in four dimensions at finite temperature. We

Does a smile matter if the person Is not real?: the effect of a smile and stock photos on persona perceptions
We analyze the effect of using smiling/non-smiling and stock photo/non-stock photo pictures in persona profiles on four key persona perceptions, including credibility, likability, similarity, and willingness to use. For this, we collect data from an experiment with 2,400 participants using a 16-item survey instrument and multiple persona profile treatments of which half have a smiling photo/stock photo and half do not. The results from structural equation modeling, supplemented by a qualitative analysis, show that a smile enhances the perceived similarity with the persona, similar personas are more liked, and that likability increases the willingness to use a persona. In contrast, the use of stock photos decreases the perceived similarity with the persona as well as persona credibility, both of which are significant predictors to a willingness to use a persona. These professionally crafted stock-photos seem to diminish the sense of identification with the persona. The above effects are consistent across the tested ages, genders, and races of the persona picture, although the effect sizes tend to be small. The results suggest that persona creators should use smiling pictures of real people to evoke positive perceptions toward the personas. In addition to presenting quantitative evidence on the predictors of willingness to use a persona, our research has implications for the design of persona profiles, showing that the picture choice influences individuals’ persona perceptions even when the other persona information is identical.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
