    Output-based Aid for Sustainable Sanitation

    No full text
A review of the experience to date in applying output-based and other results-oriented financing aid formats to the delivery of sanitation services and goods in developing countries. The paper looks at the theoretical underpinnings which justify output-based subsidies in sanitation, reviews a selection of output-based aid projects and then proposes some new approaches which could help to make financing in sanitation more effective and accountable

Enigma of ultraluminous X-ray sources may be resolved by 3D-spectroscopy (MPFS data)

The ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) were isolated in external galaxies for the last 5 years. Their X-ray luminosities exceed 100-10000 times those of brightest Milky Way black hole binaries and they are extremely variable. There are two models for the ULXs, the best black hole candidates. 1. They are supercritical accretion disks around a stellar mass black hole like that in SS433, observed close to the disk axes. 2. They are Intermediate Mass Black Holes (of 100-10000 solar masses). Critical observations which may throw light upon the ULXs nature come from observations of nebulae around the ULXs. We present results of 3D-spectroscopy of nebulae around several ULXs located in galaxies at 3-6 Mpc distances. We found that the nebulae to be powered by their central black holes. The nebulae are shocked and dynamically perturbed probably by jets. The nebulae are compared with SS433 nebula (W50).Comment: Proceedings of the ESO and Euro3D Workshop "Science Perspectives for 3D Spectroscopy", Garching (Germany), October 10-14, 2005. M. Rotation in the ZAMS: Be and Bn stars

    Get PDF
We show that Be stars belong to a high velocity tail of a single B-type star rotational velocity distribution in the MS. This implies that: 1) the number fraction N(Be)/N(Be+B) is independent of the mass; 2) Bn stars having ZAMS rotational velocities higher than a given limit might become Be stars.Comment: 3 pages ; to appear in the proceedings of the Sapporo meeting on active OB stars ; ASP Conference Series ; eds: S. Reduced O diffusion through Be doped Pt electrodes

Using first principles electronic structure calculations we screen nine elements for their potential to retard oxygen diffusion through poly-crystalline Pt (p-Pt) films. We determine that O diffuses preferentially as interstitial along Pt grain boundaries (GBs). The calculated barriers are compatible with experimental estimates. We find that Be controls O diffusion through p-Pt. Beryllium segregates to Pt GBs at interstitial (i) and substitutional (s) sites. i-Be is slightly less mobile than O and it repels O, thus stuffing the GB. s-Be has a high diffusion barrier and it forms strong bonds to O, trapping O in the GB. Experiments confirm our theoretical predictions.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figure

One-shot valve may be remotely actuated

    Get PDF
One-shot valve, with spring-loaded plunger and sealing diaphragm, incorporates an emergency release actuated by a remote sensor. The plunger is released by the electrical melting of a fuse link and pierces the valve seal. The valve lowers fluid pressure in a container without losing the contained fluid

Metallicity vs. Be phenomenon relation in the solar neighborhood

Fast rotation seems to be the mayor factor to trigger the Be phenomenon. Surface fast rotation can be favored by initial formation conditions, such as abundance of metals. We have observed 118 Be stars up to the apparent magnitudes V=9 mag. Models of fast rotating atmospheres and evolutionary tracks were used to interpret the stellar spectra and to determine the stellar fundamental parameters. Since the studied stars are formed in regions that are separated enough to imply some non negligible gradient of galactic metallicity, we study the effects of possible incidence of this gradient on the nature as rotators of the studied stars.Comment: 3 pages ; to appear in the proceedings of the Sapporo meeting on active OB stars ; ASP Conference Series ; eds: S.
