ATLAS Electroweak Measurements With Early Data

Get PDF
The large W and Z cross sections expected at the LHC allow for several measurements involving electroweak bosons already in the early data. The W and Z cross sections can be measured with good accuracy with an integrated luminosity in the range between 10 and 100 pb-1. These crosssections are presently predicted with an uncertainty of about 5%, mostly due to PDF uncertainty. In particular the ratio of W and Z cross-sections being not affected by the uncertainty on the machine luminosity can be used to extract SM parameters like GW with competitive accuracy. The Z momentum and rapidity distribution measurements will allow to constrain PDFs and QCD calculations, quickly surpassing the predictions in precision. Also the W charge asymmetry will quickly become precisely measured. ATLAS strategies and expectations are discussed, using selected examples of expectations for measurements

Inclusive muon production in 900 GeV p-p collisions with ATLAS detector

Get PDF
The observation of the inclusive muon production in p-p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 900 GeV with the ATLAS detector at LHC is presented. Data used for these studies were collected using a minimum-bias trigger in the December run. The method to select muons coming from collisions is illustrated together with a first comparison of the distributions of these muons with the expected ones from the minimum-bias Monte Carlo samples

Reliability and clinical usefulness of the personality inventory for DSM-5 in clinically referred adolescents. A preliminary report in a sample of Italian inpatients

Background The DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) provides the opportunity to integrate the needed developmental perspective in the assessment of personality pathology. Based on this model, Krueger and colleagues (2012) developed the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5), which operationalizes the proposed DSM-5 traits. Methods Eighty-five consecutively admitted Italian adolescent inpatients were administered the Italian translation of the PID-5, in order to obtain preliminary data on PID-5 reliability and clinical usefulness in clinically referred adolescents. Results With the possible exception of the PID-5 Suspiciousness scale, all other PID-5 scales evidenced adequate internal consistency reliability (i.e., Cronbach's α values of at least .70, most being greater than .80). Our data seemed to yield at least partial support for the construct validity of the PID-5 scales also in clinical adolescents, at least in terms of patterns of associations with dimensionally assessed DSM-5 Section II PDs that were also included in the DSM-5 AMPD (excluding Antisocial PD because of the participants' minor age). Finally, our data suggested that the clinical usefulness of the PID-5 in adolescent inpatients may extend beyond PDs to profiling adolescents at risk for life-threatening suicide attempts. In particular, PID-5 Depressivity, Anhedonia, and Submissiveness trait scales were significantly associated with adolescents' history of life-threatening suicide attempts, even after controlling for a number of other variables, including mood disorder diagnosis. Discussion As a whole, our study may provide interesting, albeit preliminary data as to the clinical usefulness of PID-5 in the assessment of adolescent inpatients

Thinking about assessment: Further evidence of the validity of the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition as a measure of mentalistic abilities

The present study aimed to evaluate the nomological network validity of the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC) in its Italian translation, addressing distinct research questions in three independent samples of Italian participants comprising adolescent nonclinical participants (N = 393), adult nonclinical participants (N = 193), and adult outpatients with a Personality Disorder (PD) diagnosis who sought psychotherapy treatment (N = 59). In all three samples the MASC proved to be a reliable measure of mentalizing ability, with Cronbach’s α values ranging from .70 to .78. In both nonclinical adolescents and nonclinical adults, the MASC scores correlated significantly and meaningfully with the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test scores. In nonclinical adults, the MASC scores showed significant (albeit modest) correlations with self-reported measures of attachment styles. Finally, in adult outpatients, the MASC “no ToM” scores, that are specific errors that indicating non mentalistic responses, correlated significantly with interview-based measures (Spearman r = .41, p < .01) and self-reported measures (Spearman r = .37, p < .01) of borderline personality disorder (BPD), as well as with measures of emotion dysregulation, (Spearman r = .37, p <.01). As a whole, these findings highlight the validity of the MASC as a measure of mentalization and are consistent with Fonagy and colleagues’ (i.e., Bateman & Fonagy, 2004b; Fonagy, 1991) model of mentalization and its role in personality pathology

Do radiolucent lines and stress shielding of the humeral shaft really matter in shoulder arthroplasty?

The purpose of this study is to evaluate at a mid-term follow up, the radiological survival of an uncemented humeral stem in shoulder arthroplasty. One hundred and twenty-six replacements including hemi (HA), total (TSA) and reverse (RSA) implanted from 1999 to 2008 were reviewed at a mean follow up of 7.2 years (48-144 months). The same uncemented triconical stem (SMR, Lima Corporate) was implanted. There were: 23 HSA, 43 TSA, 60 RSA. An independent observer evaluated all the patients with Constant Score. A radiologic analysis by an expert radiologist and an orthopaedic surgeon was performed: humeral component-bone interface was divided in seven zones. They judged a mobilisation if a migration or tilt of the humeral implant or if≥ 2 mm radiolucent line in at least three zones was present. Chi-squared test, Fisher test and analysis of variance were performed and a p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. No major radiological signs of loosening and no tilt or migration of the humeral component were found. Only 23 (18.2%) patients had no RL around the humeral implant. In the remaining 103 (81.7%) implants: 96 (76.1%) presented RL less than 2 mm, particularly 75 (59.5%) in less than 3 zones and 21 (16.6%) in more than 3 zones. Of the remaining 7 (5.5%) implants the presence of RL of 2 mm or greater in only one zone was seen. Apart from sepsis no revision was performed for humeral component loosening. Although a high rate of RL, uncemented humeral stem has an excellent survivorship at a mid-term follow up. Relationship between presence, position and depth of RL and internal stress shielding is commonly observed but does not appear t

Further studies on the gangliosidic nature of the cholinergic-specific antigen, Chol-1.

The antigen designated as Chol-1 beta, detected by an antiserum specific for cholinergic neurons, has been purified to homogeneity from ganglioside mixtures extracted from Torpedo electric organ and pig brain. The final products from the two sources behaved identically in a wide range of tests and gave coincident immunopositive and Ehrlich-positive spots after thin layer chromatography in seven different solvent systems; they were thus considered to be identical and to constitute a single, pure chemical species. Gas-chromatographic analysis revealed the presence of long-chain bases, glucose, galactose, N-acetylgalactosamine, and sialic acid in integral molar ratios of 1:1:2:1:3; the compound's reactivity to cholera toxin after Vibrio cholerae sialidase treatment on thin layer chromatography and the recovery of GM1 as sole product of exhaustive sialidase treatment identified it as a member of the gangliotetrahexosyl series. From the products of partial enzymatic desialylation and treatment with beta-galactosidase and a comparison of the compound's immunoreactivity to anti-Chol-1 antisera with that of other trisialogangliosides of defined molecular structure, we were able to assign a disialosyl residue alpha-Neu5Ac-(2----8)-alpha-Neu5Ac-(2----3)- to the inner galactose, and we suggest GalNAc as a possible site of linkage of the third sialic acid

Griscelli syndrome type 2: long-term follow-up after unrelated donor bone marrow transplantation

Get PDF
Griscelli syndrome (GS) is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by silvery hair ('partial albinism'). Three forms exist; GS type 2 (GS2), the most common one, is characterized by severe primary immunodeficiency with acute episodes of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) which may be fatal in the absence of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. A 5-year-old boy with HLH was referred to us because of silvery-gray hair present since birth. Abnormal pigment clumps were observed in the medulla of hair shafts on light microscopy. Electron microscopy of a skin biopsy revealed melanosomes in melanocytes, but not in keratinocytes. Leukocytes were devoid of intracytoplasmic granules on blood smear. Neurological signs were absent. Genotyping revealed a homozygous haplotype for polymorphic markers linked to the RAB27A locus, but no RAB27A mutation. A diagnosis of GS2 was established. The patient received bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from an unrelated donor, and after 72 months he did not show relapse of HLH. The long, uneventful follow-up supports the use of BMT from an unrelated donor if transplantation from a relative is not possible
