    Forecasting natural gas consumption in Istanbul using neural networks and multivariate time series methods

    Due to copyright restrictions, the access to the full text of this article is only available via subscription.The fast changes and developments in the world's economy have substantially increased energy consumption. Consequently, energy planning has become more critical and important. Forecasting is one of the main tools utilized in energy planning. Recently developed computational techniques such as genetic algorithms have led to easily produced and accurate forecasts. In this paper, a natural gas consumption forecasting methodology is developed and implemented with state-of-the-art techniques. We show that our forecasts are quite close to real consumption values. Accurate forecasting of natural gas consumption is extremely critical as the majority of purchasing agreements made are based on predictions. As a result, if the forecasts are not done correctly, either unused natural gas amounts must be paid or there will be shortages of natural gas in the planning periods

    Predictors of adverse perinatal outcomes in intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy

    Objectives: Our objective was to evaluate in our clinic the perinatal outcomes of patients diagnosed with ICP based on pre-treatment maternal serum bile acid levels, attempt to identify the risk group and review the literature in light of this information.  Material and methods: In total, 370 patients diagnosed with ICP were included in the study, divided into two groups based on the fasting total serum bile acid level before UDCA (Group 1: 10 ≥ 40 μmol/L, and Group 2: ≥ 40 μmol/L). The groups were examined for clinical characteristics and pregnancy outcomes.  Results: It was found that preterm delivery and neonatal intensive care need increased at a serum bile acid cut-off value of 34 μmol/L. Regardless of serum bile acid, significantly higher rates of meconium-stained amniotic fluid and foetal distress were observed in patients whose diagnoses were made before 34 weeks of gestation.  Conclusions: Foetal complications over 40 μmol/L of serum bile acid were significantly increased. However, slightly lower levels cut-off values (34 μmol/L) were obtained in terms of preterm birth and neonatal intensive care need. The incidence of meconium-stained amniotic fluid and foetal distress was higher in patients whose diagnosis were made before 34 weeks of gestation.

    New approach to morphometric analysis of Huschke’s foramen

    Background: Aim of the present study is to analyze the demographic and anatomical details of the Huschke’s foramen (HF) which are not previously studied and to present a new clinical perspective. Materials and methods: MDCT (Multidedector Computed Tomography) images of 495 patients obtained were retrospectively evaluated. Presence of a HF, its’ size, relations of it with side, age and gender were noted for every patient. Size of the foramen was measured in the axial plane, as well as on the reconstructed coronal and sagittal planes. Results: Of the 495 patients 99 (20%) had HF. There was no significant difference between females and males according to the presence of the HF and the side of the HF. When the dimension of the left- and the right-sided HFs were compared, there were no significant differences on none of the axes for the patients with unilateral or bilateral HF. There was no significant linear correlation between age and the dimension on axial axis, the dimension on the sagittal axis and the dimension on the coronal axis Conclusions: The present work presenting morphologic and statistical variables of HF provides a data for further studies which will indicate risk factor of herniation through HF. By the aid of MDCT which is sensitive for detection of the HF because of its thin sections, high spatial resolution, and multiplanar capabilities, lesions which were previously diagnosed as dehiscence were found to be defects

    Critical behavior of density of states near Fermi energy in low-dimensional disordered metals

    We study the effect of electron-electron interaction on the one-particle density of states (\emph{DOS}) ρ(d)(ϵ,T)\rho^{(d)}(\epsilon,T) of low-dimensional disordered metals near Fermi energy within the framework of the finite temperature conventional impurity diagram technique. We consider only diffusive limit and by a geometric re-summation of the most singular first order self-energy corrections via the Dyson equation we obtain a non-divergent solution for the \emph{DOS} at low energies, while for higher energies the well-known Altshuler-Aronov corrections are recovered. At the Fermi level ρ(d)(ϵ,T=0)0\rho^{(d)}(\epsilon,T=0)\to 0, this indicates that interacting disordered two- and quasi-one-dimensional systems are in insulating state at zero temperature. The obtained results are in good agreement with recent tunneling experiments on two-dimensional GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures and quasi-one-dimensional doped multiwall carbon nanotubes.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Subtracting Compact Binary Foregrounds to Search for Subdominant Gravitational-Wave Backgrounds in Next-Generation Ground-Based Observatories

    Stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds (SGWBs) derive from the superposition of numerous individually unresolved gravitational-wave (GW) signals. Detecting SGWBs provides us with invaluable information about astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. In this paper, we study SGWBs from binary black-hole (BBH) and binary neutron-star (BNS) coalescences in a network of next-generation ground-based GW observatories (Cosmic Explorer and Einstein Telescope) and determine how well they can be measured; this then limits how well we can observe other subdominant astrophysical and cosmological SGWBs. We simulate all-Universe populations of BBHs and BNSs and calculate the corresponding SGWBs, which consist of a superposition of (i) undetected signals, and (ii) the residual background from imperfect removal of resolved sources. The sum of the two components sets the sensitivity for observing other SGWBs. Our results show that, even with next-generation observatories, the residual background is large and limits the sensitivity to other SGWBs. The main contributions to the residual background arise from uncertainties in inferring the coalescence phase and luminosity distance of the detected signals. Alternative approaches to signal subtraction would need to be explored to minimize the BBH and BNS foreground in order to observe SGWBs from other subdominant astrophysical and cosmological sources.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, matches the published versio

    BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Leukotrienes (LTs) are inflammatory mediators produced via the 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) pathway and are linked to diverse disorders, including asthma, allergic rhinitis and cardiovascular diseases. We recently identified the benzimidazole derivative BRP-7 as chemotype for anti-LT agents by virtual screening targeting 5-LOX-activating protein (FLAP). Here, we aimed to reveal the in vitro and in vivo pharmacology of BRP-7 as an inhibitor of LT biosynthesis. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: We analysed LT formation and performed mechanistic studies in human neutrophils and monocytes, in human whole blood (HWB) and in cell-free assays. The effectiveness of BRP-7 in vivo was evaluated in rat carrageenan-induced pleurisy and mouse zymosan-induced peritonitis. KEY RESULTS: BRP-7 potently suppressed LT formation in neutrophils and monocytes and this was accompanied by impaired 5-LOX co-localization with FLAP. Neither the cellular viability nor the activity of 5-LOX in cell-free assays was affected by BRP-7, indicating that a functional FLAP is needed for BRP-7 to inhibit LTs, and FLAP bound to BRP-7 linked to a solid matrix. Compared with the FLAP inhibitor MK-886, BRP-7 did not significantly inhibit COX-1 or microsomal prostaglandin E2 synthase-1, implying the selectivity of BRP-7 for FLAP. Finally, BRP-7 was effective in HWB and impaired inflammation in vivo, in rat pleurisy and mouse peritonitis, along with reducing LT levels. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: BRP-7 potently suppresses LT biosynthesis by interacting with FLAP and exhibits anti-inflammatory effectiveness in vivo, with promising potential for further development

    BRP-187: A potent inhibitor of leukotriene biosynthesis that acts through impeding the dynamic 5-lipoxygenase/5-lipoxygenase-activating protein (FLAP) complex assembly

    The pro-inflammatory leukotrienes (LTs) are formed from arachidonic acid (AA) in activated leukocytes, where 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) translocates to the nuclear envelope to assemble a functional complex with the integral nuclear membrane protein 5-LO-activating protein (FLAP). FLAP, a MAPEG family member, facilitates AA transfer to 5-LO for efficient conversion, and LT biosynthesis critically depends on FLAP. Here we show that the novel LT biosynthesis inhibitor BRP-187 prevents the 5-LO/FLAP interaction at the nuclear envelope of human leukocytes without blocking 5-LO nuclear redistribution. BRP-187 inhibited 5-LO product formation in human monocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocytes stimulated by lipopolysaccharide plus N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (IC50=7-10nM), and upon activation by ionophore A23187 (IC50=10-60nM). Excess of exogenous AA markedly impaired the potency of BRP-187. Direct 5-LO inhibition in cell-free assays was evident only at >35-fold higher concentrations, which was reversible and not improved under reducing conditions. BRP-187 prevented A23187-induced 5-LO/FLAP complex assembly in leukocytes but failed to block 5-LO nuclear translocation, features that were shared with the FLAP inhibitor MK886. Whereas AA release, cyclooxygenases and related LOs were unaffected, BRP-187 also potently inhibited microsomal prostaglandin E2 synthase-1 (IC50=0.2μM), another MAPEG member. In vivo, BRP-187 (10mg/kg) exhibited significant effectiveness in zymosan-induced murine peritonitis, suppressing LT levels in peritoneal exudates as well as vascular permeability and neutrophil infiltration. Together, BRP-187 potently inhibits LT biosynthesis in vitro and in vivo, which seemingly is caused by preventing the 5-LO/FLAP complex assembly and warrants further preclinical evaluation

    Surveying the spirit of absolute summability on multilinear operators and homogeneous polynomials

    [EN] We draw a fundamental compendium of the most valuable results of the theory of summing linear operators and detail those that are not shared by known multilinear and polynomial extensions of absolutely summing linear operators. The lack of such results in the theory of non-linear summing operators justifies the introduction of a class of polynomials and multilinear operators that satisfies at once all related non-linear results. Surprisingly enough, this class, defined by means of a summing inequality, happens to be the well known ideal of composition with a summing operator.D.
