On the frequency and remnants of Hypernovae
Under the hypothesis that some fraction of massive stellar core collapses
give rise to unusually energetic events, termed hypernovae, I examine the
required rates assuming some fraction of such events yield gamma ray bursts. I
then discuss evidence from studies of pulsars and r-process nucleosynthesis
that independently suggests the existence of a class of unusually energetic
events. Finally I describe a scenario which links these different lines of
evidence as supporting the hypernova hypothesis.Comment: TeX, To appear in ApJ Letter
Sex differences in distress from infidelity in early adulthood and in later life:A replication and meta-analysis of Shackelford et al. (2004)
Shackelford and colleagues (2004) found that men, compared to women, are more distressed by sexual than emotional infidelity, and this sex difference continued into older age. We conducted four high-powered replications (total N = 1,952) of this effect and found different results. A meta-analysis of original and replication studies finds the sex difference in younger samples (though with a smaller effect size), and no effect among older samples. Furthermore, we found attitude toward uncommitted sex to be a mediator (although not consistently in the same direction) between participant sex and relative distress between sexual and emotional infidelity. We hypothesize that the discrepancies between the original and replication studies may be due to changing cultural attitudes about sex across time. The formation of the eccentric-orbit millisecond pulsar J1903+0327 and the origin of single millisecond pulsars
The millisecond pulsar J1903+0327 is accompanied by an ordinary G-dwarf star
in an unusually wide (\,days) and eccentric () orbit. The standard model for producing MSPs fails to explain the
orbital characteristics of this extraordinary binary, and alternative binary
models are unable to explain the observables. We present a triple-star model
for producing MSPs in relatively wide eccentric binaries with a normal
(main-sequence) stellar companion. We start from a stable triple system
consisting of a Low-Mass X-ray Binary (LMXB) with an orbital period of at least
1 day, accompanied by a G-dwarf in a wide and possibly eccentric orbit.
Variations in the initial conditions naturally provide a satisfactory
explanation for the unexplained triple component in the eclipsing soft X-ray
transient 4U~2129+47 or the cataclysmic variable EC 19314-5915. The best
explanation for J1903, however, results from the expansion of the orbit of the
LMXB, driven by the mass transfer from the evolving donor star to its neutron
star companion, which causes the triple eventually to becomes dynamically
unstable. Using numerical computations we show that, depending on the precise
system configuration at the moment the triple becomes dynamically unstable, the
ejection of each of the three components is possible. If the donor star of the
LMXB is ejected, a system resembling J1903, will result. If the neutron star is
ejected, a single MSP results. This model therefore also provides a
straightforward mechanism for forming single MSP in the Galactic disk. We
conclude that the Galaxy contains some 30--300 binaries with characteristics
similar to J1903, and about an order of magnitude fewer single millisecond
pulsars produced with the proposed triple scenario.Comment: ApJ accepted for publicatio

Shortcomings of the present approach to the development and evaluation of programs at the regional level are shown, recommendations on common approaches to program management and project appraisal are given; expert method for evaluating target programs is proposed from the view of managing the process of development and implementation of programs, timely decisions.

Comparison of seven commercial RT-PCR diagnostic kits for COVID-19
The final months of 2019 witnessed the emergence of a novel coronavirus in the human population. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has since spread across the globe and is posing a major burden on society. Measures taken to reduce its spread critically depend on timely and accurate identification of virus-infected individuals by the most sensitive and specific method available, i.e. real-time reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR). Many commercial kits have recently become available, but their performance has not yet been independently assessed. The aim of this study was to compare basic analytical and clinical performance of selected RT-PCR kits from seven different manufacturers (Altona Diagnostics, BGI, CerTest Biotec, KH Medical, PrimerDesign, R-Biopharm AG, and Seegene). We used serial dilutions of viral RNA to establish PCR efficiency and estimate the 95 % limit of detection (LOD95). Furthermore, we ran a panel of SARS-CoV-2-positive clinical samples (n = 13) for a preliminary evaluation of clinical sensitivity. Finally, we used clinical samples positive for non-coronavirus respiratory viral infections (n = 6) and a panel of RNA from related human coronaviruses to evaluate assay specificity. PCR efficiency was ≥96 % for all assays and the estimated LOD95 varied within a 6-fold range. Using clinical samples, we observed some variations in detection rate between kits. Importantly, none of the assays showed cross-reactivity with other respiratory (corona)viruses, except as expected for the SARS-CoV-1 E-gene. We conclude that all RT-PCR kits assessed in this study may be used for routine diagnostics of COVID-19 in patients by experienced molecular diagnostic laboratories
Low Energy Analyzing Powers in Pion-Proton Elastic Scattering
Analyzing powers of pion-proton elastic scattering have been measured at PSI
with the Low Energy Pion Spectrometer LEPS as well as a novel polarized
scintillator target. Angular distributions between 40 and 120 deg (c.m.) were
taken at 45.2, 51.2, 57.2, 68.5, 77.2, and 87.2 MeV incoming pion kinetic
energy for pi+ p scattering, and at 67.3 and 87.2 MeV for pi- p scattering.
These new measurements constitute a substantial extension of the polarization
data base at low energies. Predictions from phase shift analyses are compared
with the experimental results, and deviations are observed at low energies.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
