A Bayesian approach to RFI mitigation
Interfering signals such as Radio Frequency Interference from ubiquitous
satellite constellations are becoming an endemic problem in fields involving
physical observations of the electromagnetic spectrum. To address this we
propose a novel data cleaning methodology. Contamination is simultaneously
flagged and managed at the likelihood level. It is modeled in a Bayesian
fashion through a piecewise likelihood that is constrained by a Bernoulli prior
distribution. The techniques described in this paper can be implemented with

Number of distinct sites visited by N random walkers on a Euclidean lattice
The evaluation of the average number S_N(t) of distinct sites visited up to
time t by N independent random walkers all starting from the same origin on an
Euclidean lattice is addressed. We find that, for the nontrivial time regime
and for large N, S_N(t) \approx \hat S_N(t) (1-\Delta), where \hat S_N(t) is
the volume of a hypersphere of radius (4Dt \ln N)^{1/2},
\Delta={1/2}\sum_{n=1}^\infty \ln^{-n} N \sum_{m=0}^n s_m^{(n)} \ln^{m} \ln N,
d is the dimension of the lattice, and the coefficients s_m^{(n)} depend on the
dimension and time. The first three terms of these series are calculated
explicitly and the resulting expressions are compared with other approximations
and with simulation results for dimensions 1, 2, and 3. Some implications of

Ultra-narrow linewidth CW sub-THz generation using GS based OFCG and n-i-pn-i-p superlattice photomixers
A report is presented on the photonic synthesis of ultra-narrow line-width continuous-wave (CW) sub-THz signals using a gain-switching (GS) based optical frequency comb generator (OFCG), selective optical filtering and a n-i-pn-i-p superlattice photomixer. This setup provides continuous tunability with a tuning resolution in the range of 0.1 Hz at 120 GHz and full width at half maximum of the generated signals below the limits of the measurement setup (< 10 Hz). The advantages of this system make it a very good candidate for applications requiring extremely low phase noise and continuous tunability, such as high resolution spectroscopy in the sub-THz and THz range.Work supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science

Ofertas de suplementos múltiplos para tourinhos Nelore na fase de recria em pastagens durante o período da seca: desempenho produtivo e características nutricionais.
Avaliaram-se o desempenho produtivo e as características nutricionais em tourinhos Nelore em fase de recria, não-castrados, recebendo diferentes ofertas de suplementos em pastagem de Brachiaria decumbens, de julho a setembro de 2006. A área foi dividida em cinco piquetes de 2,0 ha, com disponibilidade média de matéria seca (MS) e matéria seca potencialmente digestível (MSpd) de 3,88 e 2,22 t/ha, respectivamente. Foram utilizados 30 bezerros com peso e idade iniciais médios de 230,0 ± 6,14 kg e 8,5 ± 0,18 meses, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado contendo cinco tratamentos: quatro ofertas de suplementos em comparação a mistura mineral (MM). Foram avaliados a MM (60 g/animal) e suplementos múltiplos, fornecidos diariamente nas quantidades de 0,5; 1,0; 1,5 e 2,0 kg/animal para suprir 300 g/dia de PB. Os animais responderam ao uso de suplementos múltiplos, ganhando mais peso (88,72%) e apresentaram maiores níveis séricos de N-ureia (19,95 vs. 9,66) em comparação àqueles que receberam mistura mineral. Os animais sob suplementação apresentaram maiores consumos de MS, MO, EE, FDN, CNF e NDT e esses consumos aumentaram com os níveis de oferta de suplemento. A suplementação aumentou o coeficiente de digestão da maioria das variáveis avaliadas, independentemente do nível de suplemento fornecido. Os níveis mais moderados (0,5 kg) de suplementos múltiplos podem ser fornecidos aos tourinhos em fase de recria durante o período da seca para estimular o consumo de pasto, porém a máxima produção microbiana é obtida com oferta de 1,34 kg de suplemento. As melhores respostas de desempenho e características nutricionais podem ser obtidas com o fornecimento diário de suplemento em níveis de 0,5 a 1,34 kg/animal
Continuous wave sub-THz photonic generation with ultra-narrow linewidth, ultra-high resolution, full frequency range coverage and high long-term frequency stability
We report on a photonic system for generation of high quality continuous-wave (CW) sub-THz signals. The system consists on a gain-switching-based optical frequency comb generator (GS-OFCG), a two-optical-modes selection mechanism and a n-i-pn-i-p superlattice photomixer. As mode selection mechanism, both selective tunable optical filtering using Fabry&-Pérot tunable filters (FPTFs) and Optical Injection Locking (OIL) are evaluated. The performance of the reported system surpasses in orders of magnitude the performance of any commercially available optical mm-wave and sub-THz generation system in a great number of parameters. It matches and even overcomes those of the best commercially available electronic THz generation systems. The performance parameters featured by our system are: linewidth 10 Hz at 120 GHz, complete frequency range coverage (60&-140 GHz) with a resolution in the order of 0.1 Hz at 120 GHz ({hbox{10}} -12} of generated frequency), high long term frequency stability (5 Hz deviation over one hour). Most of these values are limited by the measurement instrumentation accuracy and resolution, thus the actual values of the system could be better than the reported ones. The frequency can be extended straightforwardly up to 1 THz extending the OFCG frequency span. This system is compact, robust, reliable, offers a very high performance, especially suited for sub-THz photonic local oscillators and high resolution spectroscopy.This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology through the Project TEC2009-14525-C02-02. The Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array Dish II: Characterization of Spectral Structure with Electromagnetic Simulations and its science Implications
We use time-domain electromagnetic simulations to determine the spectral
characteristics of the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Arrays (HERA) antenna.
These simulations are part of a multi-faceted campaign to determine the
effectiveness of the dish's design for obtaining a detection of redshifted 21
cm emission from the epoch of reionization. Our simulations show the existence
of reflections between HERA's suspended feed and its parabolic dish reflector
that fall below -40 dB at 150 ns and, for reasonable impedance matches, have a
negligible impact on HERA's ability to constrain EoR parameters. It follows
that despite the reflections they introduce, dishes are effective for
increasing the sensitivity of EoR experiments at relatively low cost. We find
that electromagnetic resonances in the HERA feed's cylindrical skirt, which is
intended to reduce cross coupling and beam ellipticity, introduces significant
power at large delays ( dB at 200 ns) which can lead to some loss of
measurable Fourier modes and a modest reduction in sensitivity. Even in the
presence of this structure, we find that the spectral response of the antenna
is sufficiently smooth for delay filtering to contain foreground emission at
line-of-sight wave numbers below Mpc, in
the region where the current PAPER experiment operates. Incorporating these
results into a Fisher Matrix analysis, we find that the spectral structure
observed in our simulations has only a small effect on the tight constraints
HERA can achieve on parameters associated with the astrophysics of

The Impact of Beam Variations on Power Spectrum Estimation for 21 cm Cosmology II: Mitigation of Foreground Systematics for HERA
One key challenge in detecting 21 cm cosmological signal at z > 6 is to
separate the cosmological signal from foreground emission. This can be studied
in a power spectrum space where the foreground is confined to low delay modes
whereas the cosmological signal can spread out to high delay modes. When there
is a calibration error, however, chromaticity of gain errors propagates to the
power spectrum estimate and contaminates the modes for cosmological detection.
The Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) employs a high-precision
calibration scheme using redundancy in measurements. In this study, we focus on
the gain errors induced by nonredundancies arising from feed offset relative to
the HERA's 14 meter parabolic dish element, and investigate how to mitigate the
chromatic gain errors using three different methods: restricting baseline
lengths for calibration, smoothing the antenna gains, and applying a temporal
filter prior to calibration. With 2 cm/2 degree perturbations for
translation/tilting motions, a level achievable under normal HERA operating
conditions, the combination of the baseline cut and temporal filtering
indicates that the spurious gain feature due to nonredundancies is
significantly reduced, and the power spectrum recovers the clean
foreground-free region. We found that the mitigation technique works even for
large feed motions but in order to keep a stable calibration process, the feed
positions need to be constrained to 2 cm for translation motions and 2 degree
