    Effects of interactions between the constituents of chitosan-edible films on their physical properties

    The main objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of chitosan and plasticizer concentrations and oil presence on the physical and mechanical properties of edible films. The effect of the film constituents and their in-between interactions were studied through the evaluation of permeability, opacity and mechanical properties. The effects of the studied variables (concentrations of chitosan, plasticizer and oil) were analysed according to a 2 3 factorial design. Pareto charts were used to identify the most significant factors in the studied properties (water vapour, oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability; opacity; tensile strength; elongation at break and Young's modulus). When addressing the influence of the interactions between the films' constituents on the properties above, results show that chitosan and plasticizer concentrations are the most significant factors affecting most of the studied properties, while oil incorporation has shown to be of a great importance in the particular case of transport properties (gas permeability), essentially due to its hydrophobicity. Water vapour permeability values (ranging from 1. 62 × 10 -11 to 4. 24 × 10 -11 g m -1 s -1 Pa -1) were half of those reported for cellophane films. Also the mechanical properties (tensile strength values from 0. 43 to 13. 72 MPa and elongation-at-break values from 58. 62% to 166. 70%) were in the range of those reported for LDPE and HDPE. Based on these results, we recommend the use of 1. 5% (w/w) chitosan concentration to produce films, where the oil and plasticizer proportions will have to be adjusted in a case-by-case basis according to the use intended for the material.     The effect of polymer/plasticiser ratio in film forming solutions on the properties of chitosan films

    In this work physical-chemical properties of chitosan/ glycerol film forming solutions (FFS) and the resulting films were analysed. Solutions were prepared using different concentrations of plasticising agent (glycerol) and chitosan. Films were produced by solvent casting and equilibrated in a controlled atmosphere. FFS water activity and rheological behaviour were determined. Films water content, solubility, water vapour and oxygen permeabilities, thickness, and mechanical and thermal properties were determined. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was also used to study the chitosan/glycerol interactions. Results demonstrate that FFS chitosan concentration influenced solutions consistency coefficient and this was related with differences in films water retention and structure. Plasticiser addition led to an increase in films moisture content, solubility and water vapour permeability, water affinity and structural changes. Films thermo-mechanical properties are significantly affected by both chitosan and glycerol addition. FTIR experiments confirm these results.     New monopole Antennafor Ultra Wideband Applications

    There has been a flourishing prospect of UWB technology in recent years in both communication and other purposes like microwave imaging and radar applications. Recent studies of UWB antenna structures are specially concentrated on microstrip [1], slot and planar monopole antennas [2]. In this work, a small monopole antenna with diamond shape of the patch (30 x 26 mm²) printed microstrip fed monopole antenna has been designed, some parameters like return loss (S11), Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR), radiation pattern has been performed to test the validity of simulation and verify eligibility of the antenna for the wireless communications purpose. The proposed antenna is simulated in CST Microwave Studio and has surpassed the bandwidth of UWB requirement, which is from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz, and exhibits good UWB characteristics. The -10 dB return loss bandwidth of this antenna element is from 3.34 GHz to more than 19.5 GHz

    Electronic absorption spectra of selected ligands (Alloxan, Carmine, Naphthol Yellow S, Hematoxylin and Cyanine) were recorded in presence of different solvents (H2O, Ethyl acetate, Ethanol, DMF, Isopropyl alcohol, Amyl alcohol and Butanol) of variable physical properties. The electronic transitions were assigned. The data are analyzed based on the multiple linear regression technique explained from the views of different solvent parameters. Statistical analyses of the effect of solvents on the electronic spectra of the present ligands have been investigated

    The use of electric fields for edible coatings and films development and production: A review

    Edible films and coatings can provide additional protection for food, while being a fully biodegradable, environmentally friendly packaging system. A diversity of raw materials used to produce edible coatings and films are extracted from marine and agricultural sources, including animals and plants. Electric fields processing holds advantage in producing safe, wholesome and nutritious food. Recently, the presence of a moderate electric field during the preparation of edible coatings and films was shown to influence their main properties, demonstrating its usefulness to tailor edible films and coatings for specific applications.     New heterogeneous metal-oxides based catalyst for vegetable oil trans-esterification

    Neste trabalho são apresentados a preparação de novos materiais obtidos da co-precipitação de alumina e óxidos de estanho e zinco e seu uso como sistemas catalíticos ativos para alcoólise de óleos vegetais. Foi observado que estes óxidos metálicos do tipo (Al2O3)X(SnO)Y(ZnO) Z são ativos para a alcoólise do óleo de soja usando diversos álcoois, incluindo ramificados. Os melhores resultados foram observados utilizando metanol, sendo atingidas conversões acima de 80% em 4 horas. Foi também possível reciclar estes materiais sem perda aparente de sua atividade catalítica.The preparation of new materials obtained from the co-precipitation of aluminum, tin and zinc oxides and their use as catalytic system activities for vegetable oils alcoholysis are reported herein. It was observed that these metal-oxides of the type (Al2O3)X(SnO)Y(ZnO) Z are active for soybean oil alcoholysis, uzing several alcohols, including branched ones. Best result was achieved using methanol, with conversion yields up to 80% in 4 h. It was also possible to recycle the catalysts without apparent loss of activity

    Dung beetle assemblages, dung removal and secondary seed dispersal: Data from a large-scale, multi-site experiment in the Western Palaearctic

    By manipulating faeces during feeding and breeding, dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) fulfil important ecosystem functions in terrestrial ecosystems throughout the world. In a pan-European multi‑site experiment (MSE), we estimated the ecosystem functions of dung removal and secondary seed dispersal by differing combinations of dung beetle functional groups. Therefore, we classified dung beetles into five functional groups according to their body size and dung manipulation method: dwellers, large and small tunnelers, and large and small rollers. Furthermore, we set up a dung beetle sampling database containing all sampled dung beetles during the project. By identifying dung beetle specimens to the species level, we obtained a detailed insight into the dung beetle communities at each study location. By establishing experimental plots allowing and inhibiting specific combinations of functional groups in the local dung beetle assemblage from removing dung and seeds, we estimated the role of each group in dung removal and secondary seed dispersal during a 4-week period. We performed all experiments in grazed (semi-) natural grasslands, and used different dung types (cattle, horse, sheep, goat or red deer) to match the herbivore species grazing in close vicinity of each of the study areas. Simultaneously, we sampled dung beetle assemblages by using pitfalls baited with the same dung types as used in the experiments. This data paper documents two datasets collected in the framework of this MSE project. All the experiments took place between 2013 and 2016 at 17 study sites in 10 countries and 11 biogeographic zones. The entire dung beetle sampling dataset was published as a sampling event dataset at GBIF. The dataset includes the sampling results of all 17 study sites, which contain 1,050 sampling events and 4,362 occurrence records of 94 species. The second dataset contains the results of the dung removal and secondary seed dispersal experiments in which we used 11 experimental treatments and the five dung types mentioned above. This experimental results dataset holds all experimental results of the MSE project (11,537 records), and was published in the online data repository Zenodo
