    The exponential map for the unitary group SU(2,2)

    In this article we extend our previous results for the orthogonal group, SO(2,4)SO(2,4), to its homomorphic group SU(2,2)SU(2,2). Here we present a closed, finite formula for the exponential of a 4Ă—44\times 4 traceless matrix, which can be viewed as the generator (Lie algebra elements) of the SL(4,C)SL(4,C) group. We apply this result to the SU(2,2)SU(2,2) group, which Lie algebra can be represented by the Dirac matrices, and discuss how the exponential map for SU(2,2)SU(2,2) can be written by means of the Dirac matrices.Comment: 10 page

    Four-Dimensional Yang-Mills Theory as a Deformation of Topological BF Theory

    The classical action for pure Yang--Mills gauge theory can be formulated as a deformation of the topological BFBF theory where, beside the two-form field BB, one has to add one extra-field η\eta given by a one-form which transforms as the difference of two connections. The ensuing action functional gives a theory that is both classically and quantistically equivalent to the original Yang--Mills theory. In order to prove such an equivalence, it is shown that the dependency on the field η\eta can be gauged away completely. This gives rise to a field theory that, for this reason, can be considered as semi-topological or topological in some but not all the fields of the theory. The symmetry group involved in this theory is an affine extension of the tangent gauge group acting on the tangent bundle of the space of connections.     A novel entitled Air Mata Tuhan as a study of woman psychology was focused on the main character. This research aimed to know the forms of women's personality, and to describe the linkage between structural elements and psychology aspect contained on the main character in the Novel entitled Air Mata Tuhan written by Aguk Irawan M.N. The used research method was qualitative by using literature study. The data contained in the Novel entitled Air Mata Tuhan were also analyzed. The research result indicated that structural elements included title, theme, characterization, character, and conflict has the linkage. The analysis of woman psychology showed that (1) the woman characteristic was beauty included beauty of inside and outside, tenderness, humility, nurturing, easily disappointed and rise up again; (2) woman and family, included woman as a wife, woman as a partner of life; and (3) woman and depression. Those characteristics were belonged to the main character in the Novel entitled Air MataTuhan named Fisha

    Compact atomic descriptors enable accurate predictions via linear models

    We probe the accuracy of linear ridge regression employing a three-body local density representation derived from the atomic cluster expansion. We benchmark the accuracy of this framework in the prediction of formation energies and atomic forces in molecules and solids. We find that such a simple regression framework performs on par with state-of-the-art machine learning methods which are, in most cases, more complex and more computationally demanding. Subsequently, we look for ways to sparsify the descriptor and further improve the computational efficiency of the method. To this aim, we use both principal component analysis and least absolute shrinkage operator regression for energy fitting on six single-element datasets. Both methods highlight the possibility of constructing a descriptor that is four times smaller than the original with a similar or even improved accuracy. Furthermore, we find that the reduced descriptors share a sizable fraction of their features across the six independent datasets, hinting at the possibility of designing material-agnostic, optimally compressed, and accurate descriptors

    Cost-of-illness in systemic sclerosis: a retrospective study of an italian cohort of 106 patients

    Aims: It is increasingly important to determine the economic consequences of diseases considering the policy of limited health–care budgets. In this study we evaluated the annual direct and indirect costs of Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) and we tried also to identify any cost predictors. Methods: We studied 106 patients (103 female, 3 male), 57 affected by Limited Systemic Sclerosis (LSSc) and 49 affected by Diffuse Systemic Sclerosis (DSSc). Mean age was 57 years (SD±13,8) and mean disease duration was 8,9 years (SD±7,2). Direct costs: data were calculated referring to DRG (Disease Related Group) expenses for the in-patients. We referred to national pharmacopoeia to calculate the pharmaceutical cost for the out-patients. Indirect costs: we estimated the expense comparing our cases to literature data. Intangible costs: these are attributable to pain and psychological suffering. It is very difficult to express the intangible costs in monetary terms and they are often conveyed as disability and poorer quality-of-life. We used the Health Assessment Questionnaire "HAQ" and the Short Form-36 "SF-36" to evaluate this issues. Results: Our study confirms, the extremely high costs caused by Systemic Sclerosis (total cost's 2001 year is € 1.173.842,93, and average yearly patient cost is € 11.073,99). Considering an estimated prevalence of 375 cases/106, the total yearly economic impact of SSc in Italy should be € 249.000.000,00. Intangible costs were calculated as modifications of the health status. Average value of the HAQ was significantly higher than the control population (0,94±0,72), average values in the SF-36 were significantly lower than the control population (49,99±19,16 for physical dimension and 58,42±27,71 for mental dimension). The diffuse form of SSc, positivity for anti-Scl 70 antibodies, high skin score and a poor health status (HAQ and SF-36) were found to be cost predictors. Conclusions: As reported in the literature, our study confirms, the extremely high costs for total and single patients caused by Systemic Sclerosis. The DSSc are more expensive than the LSSc approximately 11% (p=0,0067). The direct costs are 30% higher in the DSSc than the LSSc (p<0.001). The indirect and intangible costs are not significantly different. Moreover, our study shows also the possibility of identifying different cost predictors

    Uplift and magma intrusion at Long Valley caldera from InSAR and gravity measurements

    The Long Valley caldera (California) formed ~760,000 yr ago following the massive eruption of the Bishop Tuff. Postcaldera volcanism in the Long Valley volcanic fi eld includes lava domes as young as 650 yr. The recent geological unrest is characterized by uplift of the resurgent dome in the central section of the caldera (75 cm in the past 33 yr) and earthquake activity followed by periods of relative quiescence. Since the spring of 1998, the caldera has been in a state of low activity. The cause of unrest is still debated, and hypotheses range from hybrid sources (e.g., magma with a high percentage of volatiles) to hydrothermal fl uid intrusion. Here, we present observations of surface deformation in the Long Valley region based on differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR), leveling, global positioning system (GPS), two-color electronic distance meter (EDM), and microgravity data. Thanks to the joint application of InSAR and microgravity data, we are able to unambiguously determine that magma is the cause of unrest

    Towards the development of cascaded surface plasmon resonance POF sensors exploiting gold films and synthetic recognition elements for detection of contaminants in transformer oil

    The possibility of developing a multichannel optical chemical sensor, based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in a D-shaped multimode plastic optical fiber (POF), is presented by two cascaded SPR-POF-MIP sensors with different thicknesses of the gold layer. The low cost, the high selectivity and sensitivity of the SPR-POF-MIP platforms and the simple and modular scheme of the optical interrogation layout make this system a potentially suitable on-line multi-diagnostic tool. As a proof of principle, the possibility of simultaneous determination of two important analytes, dibenzyl disulfide (DBDS) and furfural (2-FAL), in power transformer oil was investigated. Their presence gives useful indication of underway corrosive or ageing processes in power transformers, respectively. Preliminarily, the dependence of the performance of the D-shaped optical platform on the gold film thickness has been studied, comparing two platforms with 30 nm and 60 nm thick gold layers. It has been found that the resonance wavelengths are different on platforms with gold layer of different thickness, furthermore when MIPs are present on the gold as receptors, the performances of the platforms are similar in the two considered sensors.
