    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Optical emission in 1:1 binary gaseous mixtures under high voltage displays a varying character depending on pressure, applied voltage polarity, and chemical nature of the mixture. Under negative polarity, in pure N-2 and 50% mixture of Ar, O-2 and CO2, emission stemming from N-2(+) is enhanced relative to emission from neutral N-2. On mixtures of N-2 with gases containing halogens (CCl4, CHCl3, CH2Cl2, CF3H, CF2Cl2 and SF6) a reversal is observed, i.e. the N-2(+) emission is suppressed. An enhancement factor is defined as the ratio of the emission under negative polarity to positive polarity to quantify this polarity dependence. This enhancement factor varies between 0.01 and 50 depending on the second component in the mixture

    Detecting Singleton Review Spammers Using Semantic Similarity

    Online reviews have increasingly become a very important resource for consumers when making purchases. Though it is becoming more and more difficult for people to make well-informed buying decisions without being deceived by fake reviews. Prior works on the opinion spam problem mostly considered classifying fake reviews using behavioral user patterns. They focused on prolific users who write more than a couple of reviews, discarding one-time reviewers. The number of singleton reviewers however is expected to be high for many review websites. While behavioral patterns are effective when dealing with elite users, for one-time reviewers, the review text needs to be exploited. In this paper we tackle the problem of detecting fake reviews written by the same person using multiple names, posting each review under a different name. We propose two methods to detect similar reviews and show the results generally outperform the vectorial similarity measures used in prior works. The first method extends the semantic similarity between words to the reviews level. The second method is based on topic modeling and exploits the similarity of the reviews topic distributions using two models: bag-of-words and bag-of-opinion-phrases.     Investigation of healthy lifestyle behaviors and quality of life in individuals undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

    Objective: This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to investigate healthy lifestyle behaviors and quality of life in individuals who had undergone hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) within the past six months and before. The study was conducted with a descriptive cross-sectional design to investigate healthy lifestyle behaviors and quality of life in survivors undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in six months and before. Patients and Methods: The population of the study consisted of adults, who underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in six months and before, in a university hospital. The sample consisted of 76 cases who were selected via convivence sampling. The data were collected using a Patient Information Form, the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale–II (HLBS-II), and the SF-36 Quality of Life Scale (SF-36). Results: The mean scores of the HLBS-II and SF-36 Physical and Mental Components were 134.34 ± 19.81, 49.54 ± 23.27, and 52.95 ±2 1.31, respectively. A statistically significant difference was detected in the HLBS-II total score in terms of educational background and the status of receiving radiotherapy treatment (p<0.05). A score of the SF- 36 Physical Component showed a statistically significant difference in terms of working status, status of receiving radiotherapy treatment, developing complications, and re-hospitalization after discharge (p<0.05). A score of SF-36 Mental Component showed a statistically significant difference in terms of the working status and the status of getting regularly vaccinated after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (p<0.05). There were weak correlations between the total score of HLBS-II and a score of the SF-36 Physical Component (r=0.273 p<0.017). Conclusions: Consequently, it was concluded that the patients had a moderate level of healthy lifestyle behaviors and poor quality of life in the six months and later after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

    From bonito to anchovy: a reconstruction of Turkey’s marine fisheries catches (1950-2010)

    Turkey’s marine fisheries catches were estimated for the 1950-2010 time period using a reconstruction approach, which estimated all fisheries removals, including unreported landings, recreational landings and discards.  We added these estimates to the ‘official’ data, as reported in TURKSTAT, which are also available from the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).  The total reconstructed catch for the 1950-2010 time period (inclusive of the reported data) is approximately 32 million t, or 74% more than the 18.4 million t of reported data. This added approximately 13.6 million t to the reported data, consisting of 6.9 million t of unreported landings, 2.6 million t of discards, 2.4 million t of recreational catches, and 1.7 million t of subsistence catches.  In 2010, total reported marine landings for Turkey were 445,680 t and the total reconstructed catch was 763,760 t, or 73% more than the reported data.   The main unreported taxon by tonnage was European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) due to its sheer high proportion of catch.  The major reasons for underreporting include a general distrust fishers have towards the taxing system combined with inefficient fisheries monitoring and surveillance capabilities.  Accounting for all fisheries components is crucial in understanding the development of fisheries resources, improving management, and reducing threats to the domestic food security of Turkey

    Effects of processing on polyphenolic and volatile composition and fruit quality of clery strawberries

    Strawberries belonging to cultivar Clery (Fragaria x ananassa (Duchesne ex Weston)), cultivated in central Italy were subjected to a multi‐methodological experimental study. Fresh and defrosted strawberries were exposed to different processing methods, such as homogenization, thermal and microwave treatments. The homogenate samples were submitted to CIEL*a*b* color analysis and Head‐Space GC/MS analysis to determine the impact of these procedures on phytochemical composition. Furthermore, the corresponding strawberry hydroalcoholic extracts were further analyzed by HPLC‐DAD for secondary metabolites quantification and by means of spectrophotometric in vitro assays to evaluate their total phenolic and total flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity. These chemical investigations confirmed the richness in bioactive metabolites supporting the extraordinary healthy potential of this fruit as a food ingredient, as well as functional food, highlighting the strong influence of the processing steps which could negatively impact on the polyphenol composition. Despite a more brilliant red color and aroma preservation, nonpasteurized samples were characterized by a lower content of polyphenols and antioxidant activity with respect to pasteurized samples, as also suggested by the PCA analysis of the collected data

    A blockchain-based authentication protocol for cooperative vehicular ad hoc network

    The efficiency of cooperative communication protocols to increase the reliability and range of transmission for Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) is proven, but identity verification and communication security are required to be ensured. Though it is difficult to maintain strong network connections between vehicles because of there high mobility, with the help of cooperative communication, it is possible to increase the communication efficiency, minimise delay, packet loss, and Packet Dropping Rate (PDR). However, cooperating with unknown or unauthorized vehicles could result in information theft, privacy leakage, vulnerable to different security attacks, etc. In this paper, a blockchain based secure and privacy preserving authentication protocol is proposed for the Internet of Vehicles (IoV). Blockchain is utilized to store and manage the authentication information in a distributed and decentralized environment and developed on the Ethereum platform that uses a digital signature algorithm to ensure confidentiality, non-repudiation, integrity, and preserving the privacy of the IoVs. For optimized communication, transmitted services are categorized into emergency and optional services. Similarly, to optimize the performance of the authentication process, IoVs are categorized as emergency and general IoVs. The proposed cooperative protocol is validated by numerical analyses which show that the protocol successfully increases the system throughput and decreases PDR and delay. On the other hand, the authentication protocol requires minimum storage as well as generates low computational overhead that is suitable for the IoVs with limited computer resources

    Spatially Selective Assembly of Quantum Dot Light Emitters in an LED Using Engineered Peptides

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots are utilized in numerous applications in nano- and biotechnology. In device applications, where several different material components are involved, quantum dots typically need to be assembled at explicit locations for enhanced functionality. Conventional approaches cannot meet these requirements where assembly of nanocrystals is usually material-nonspecific, thereby limiting the control of their spatial distribution. Here we demonstrate directed self-assembly of quantum dot emitters at material-specific locations in a color-conversion LED containing several material components including a metal, a dielectric, and a semiconductor. We achieve a spatially selective immobilization of quantum dot emitters by using the unique material selectivity characteristics provided by the engineered solid-binding peptides as smart linkers. Peptide-decorated quantum dots exhibited several orders of magnitude higher photoluminescence compared to the control groups, thus, potentially opening up novel ways to advance these photonic platforms in applications ranging from chemical to biodetection. © 2011 American Chemical Society
