    Knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) regarding sexuality, sexual behaviors and contraceptives among college/university students in Karachi, Pakistan

    OBJECTIVE: To assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding sexuality, high risk sexual behaviors and methods of contraception, among college/university students of Karachi, Pakistan. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional observational study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Higher Education Commission-recognized government and private colleges/universities in Karachi from 2005-2006. METHODOLOGY: Two colleges/universities were randomly selected from each category i.e. government medical, government non-medical and private medical and non-medical colleges/universities. Three stage cluster sampling was employed to draw a representative sample of students. A self administered questionnaire was used to elicit information on knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding high risk sexual behaviors, methods of contraception and sources to obtain information about sexual issues. RESULTS: A total of 957 students were interviewed. They comprised 542 (56.6%) males and 415 (43.4%) females with mean age of 21 1.8 years. Bivariate analysis showed that students enrolled in medical colleges/universities were less likely to watch adult films (O.R. 0.7, CI; 0.5-0.9) to acquire sex related knowledge and go out on dates (O.R. 0.6, CI; 0.4- 0.8). Similarly, medical students were less likely to consider contraception as being against Islamic teachings (O.R. 0.7, CI; 0.5-0.9). CONCLUSION: The curricula of non-medical studies at undergraduate level should include education regarding sexual health and contraception

    Angiomyxolipoma is a rare subtype of lipoma, is a tumor of mesenchymal origin, and several subtypes have been described that vary according to their location. It is an admixture of fatty tissue admixed with myxoid stroma and blood vessels. Here we report a case of a 43-year-old man presented with complaints of painless swelling in the left scapular region. Patient underwent for local excision which on histopathologic examination revealed poorly encapsulated lesion with an admixture of lobules of adipocytes, clumps of blood vessels of varying sizes and loose fibrous tissue with myxoid change which was consistent with angiomyxolipoma

    Outcome and factors associated with hospital mortality in patients with impaired left ventricular function undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting: where do we stand?

    Objective: Impaired ventricular function is a known risk factor for mortality after coronary artery bypass grafting however increasingly more patients with impaired ventricular function are referred for surgery. Currently no large data is available from Pakistan regarding this aspect of coronary surgery. Our objectives were to find out the hospital mortality and mid term functional improvement in patients with impaired ventricular function undergoing coronary artery by pass grafting and identify the risk factors for mortality. Methodology: Retrospective analysis of preoperative, operative and postoperative variables of patients with impaired ventricular function who were operated for isolated first time coronary artery bypass between October 2006 to April 2009. Results: Total 190 patients with impaired ventricular function underwent isolated first time coronary artery bypass grafting during this period with a male predominance (82.6%). Mean ejection fraction of the group was 25.4±5.3%. Mean predicted mortality on logistic Euro score was 10.9±2.7%. Actual in hospital mortality of the group was 4.7% which is comparable to contemporary published results. Multivariate analysis identified use of intra aortic balloon pump, non use of internal mammary artery and preoperative NYHA functional class as factors associated with mortality. Conclusion: Coronary artery bypass grafting can be performed in patients with impaired ventricular function with acceptable hospital mortality and mid term functional improvement

    Root cause analysis (RCA) of fractured ASTM A53 carbon steel pipe at oil & gas company

    Incident involving failures of ASTM A53 carbon steel (CS) pipe, connected to pressure safety valve (PSV) and carrying raw gas has caused serious supply disruption. This study was performed to identify the most probable cause of the pipe failure. It was conducted by reviewing the existing design, construction data and pipe material analysis using non-destructive techniques such as VT, PT, MT and UT along with metallographic, hardness and microscopic analysis. The investigation revealed that excessive material loss has occurred in both failure and its adjacent regions due to abrasive grinding, resulting in the formation of a through thickness flaw. These grindings were performed to accommodate the pre-installed piping spool to avoid alteration in the pipe position. RCA demonstrated that this rapid thinning of the steel pipe body later led to its failure. Metallurgical study using photomicrograph shows that the morphology of the steel material was consistent and did not show any evidence of internal corrosion or micro fractures. Further damage to the surface of already excessively reduced thickness occurred due to nominal pipe vibration and atmospheric effect during service. The research work described in the paper has a significant meaning to recognize the root cause of such failures in CS pipes and through given recommendations to eliminate future such happenings

    RIME 60 Years: Celebration and Future Horizons

    This year marks the 60th anniversary (1961-2021) of Research in Medical Education (RIME). Over the past 6 decades, RIME has selected medical education research to be presented each year at the Association of American Medical Colleges Annual Meeting: Learn Serve Lead and published in a supplement of Academic Medicine. In this article, the authors surveyed RIME chairs from the past 20 years to identify ways that RIME has advanced medical education research and to generate ideas for future directions. RIME chairs described advancements in the rigor and impact of RIME research and the timeliness of the topics, often serving as a driver for cutting-edge research. They highlighted RIME\u27s role in promoting qualitative research, introducing new epistemologies, and encouraging networking as a means of career advancement. Going forward, RIME chairs suggested (1) strengthening collaborations with formal advanced MEd and PhD degree programs, (2) creating formal mentorship channels for junior and minority faculty, and (3) promoting research related to knowledge translation

Although, mixed halide CH3NH3PbBr3−xClx perovskites have been prepared by different methods, however, to the best of our knowledge the anti-solvent-assisted crystallization method is employed here for the first time to prepare mixed halide CH3NH3PbBr3−xClx perovskite powders. Solution-processed methyl ammonium lead tribromide CH3NH3PbBr3 (x = 0) and different amounts of chloride (Cl) containing mixed halide perovskites (CH3NH3PbBr3−xClx) were prepared for compositions of x = 0.5, 1, 1.25, 1.75. It reveals that bulk CH3NH3PbBr3−xClx samples are highly crystalline and exists in pure single cubic phase with an increased tolerance factor as compared to pure CH3NH3PbBr3. The CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite has space-group Pm-3 m and a cell parameter of 5.930 Å (volume = 206 Å). The synthesis route adopted here gives access to hybrid perovskites powders with high Cl content and hence enables the band gap to be precisely tuned over a range from 2.26 to 2.49 eV. The powder samples display the subtle shifts in the emission spectra and the photoluminescence kinetics exhibits a decrease in average lifetime by increasing the Cl contents due to the presence of trap states in the structures that encourage non-radiative recombination of charge carrier. Conventionally, the CH3NH3PbBr3-based inverted solar cell architecture is prepared via mixing of the CH3NH3Br and PbBr2 precursors. In contrast, herein, the precursor solutions are directly prepared from the CH3NH3PbBr3 powder and the active layer of the inverted perovskite solar cells are then spin coated using this solution. The high Voc value of the fabricated solar cells potentially makes it a promising candidate for tandem photovoltaic, photocatalytic water splitting, and semi-transparent photovoltaic applications.PostprintPostprintPeer reviewe

    Automatic classification of power quality disturbances: a review

    The development of intelligent power quality (PQ) disturbances classification and analysis tools exploited various digital signal-processing techniques to extract important features from the PQ signals. The purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive review and discussion of the advanced tools for the automatic classification of PQ disturbances. The digital signal-processing tools applied for feature extraction include Fourier-transform, Wavelet-transform, Stockwell-transform etc. For the classification of PQ disturbances, the artificial intelligence techniques such as artificial neural networks, fuzzy logic and support vector machine are reviewed here. A large number of features used as inputs to the classifiers may affect the accuracy rate and requires a large memory space. The optimization techniques have been used in literature for optimal feature selection, which include genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, particle swarm optimization and ant colony optimization. An extensive review provides to the researchers a clear perspective on various techniques of PQ disturbances classification
