    Using noun phrases extraction for the improvement of hybrid clustering with text- and citation-based components. The example of “Information Systems Research”

    The hybrid clustering approach combining lexical and link-based similarities suffered for a long time from the different properties of the underlying networks. We propose a method based on noun phrase extraction using natural language processing to improve the measurement of the lexical component. Term shingles of different length are created form each of the extracted noun phrases. Hybrid networks are built based on weighted combination of the two types of similarities with seven different weights. We conclude that removing all single term shingles provides the best results at the level of computational feasibility, comparability with bibliographic coupling and also in a community detection application

    Conduction spectroscopy of a proximity induced superconducting topological insulator

    The combination of superconductivity and the helical spin-momentum locking at the surface state of a topological insulator (TI) has been predicted to give rise to p-wave superconductivity and Majorana bound states. The superconductivity can be induced by the proximity effect of a an s-wave superconductor (S) into the TI. To probe the superconducting correlations inside the TI, dI/dV spectroscopy has been performed across such S-TI interfaces. Both the alloyed Bi1.5_{1.5}Sb0.5_{0.5}Te1.7_{1.7}Se1.3_{1.3} and the stoichiometric BiSbTeSe2_2 have been used as three dimensional TI. In the case of Bi1.5_{1.5}Sb0.5_{0.5}Te1.7_{1.7}Se1.3_{1.3}, the presence of disorder induced electron-electron interactions can give rise to an additional zero-bias resistance peak. For the stoichiometric BiSbTeSe2_2 with less disorder, tunnel barriers were employed in order to enhance the signal from the interface. The general observations in the spectra of a large variety of samples are conductance dips at the induced gap voltage, combined with an increased sub-gap conductance, consistent with p-wave predictions. The induced gap voltage is typically smaller than the gap of the Nb superconducting electrode, especially in the presence of an intentional tunnel barrier. Additional uncovered spectroscopic features are oscillations that are linearly spaced in energy, as well as a possible second order parameter component.Comment: Semiconductor Science and Technology; Special Issue on Hybrid Quantum Materials and Device

    Smart Solutions: Smart Grid Demokit

    Treball desenvolupat dins el marc del programa 'European Project Semester'.The purpose of this report is to justify the design choices of the smart grid demo kit. Something had to be designed to make a smart grid clear for people who have little knowledge about smart grids. The product had to be appealing and clear for people to understand. And eventually should be usable, for example, on an information market. The first part of the research consisted of looking how to shape the whole system. How the 'tiles' had to look to be interactive for users and what they should feature. One part of this was doing research to get to know more about the already existing knowledge amount users. Another research investigated what appeals the most to the users. After this, a concept was created in compliance with the group and the client. The concept consists of hexagonal tiles, each with a different function: houses, solar panels, wind turbines, factories and energy storages. These tiles are all different parts of a smart grid. When combining these tiles, it can be made clear to users how smart grids work. The tiles are fabricated using a combination of 3D printing and laser cutting. The tiles have laser cut symbols on top of them to show what part of the smart grid they are. Digital LED strips are on top of the tiles to show the direction of the energy flow, and the colors indicate if the tile is producing or consuming power from the grid. The tiles are connected to each other by the so called “grid blocks”. These blocks make up the central power grid and are also lighting up by LED strips. Each tile is equipped with a microcontroller which controls the LED strips and makes it possible for the different tiles to “talk” with each other. Using this, the central tile knows which tiles are connected to the system. The central tile controls all tiles and runs the simulation of the smart grid. For further development of the project, it can be investigated how to control and adjust the system from an external system, for example by a tablet. The final product consists of five tiles connected by seven grid blocks which show how a smart grid works

    Improved lexical similarities for hybrid clustering through the use of noun phrases extraction

    Clustering of hybrid document networks combining citation based links with lexical similarities suffered for a long time from the different properties of these underlying networks. In this paper we evaluate different processing options of noun phrases extracted from abstracts using natural language processing to improve the measurement of the lexical component. Term shingles of different length are created from each of the extracted noun phrases. We discuss twenty different extraction-shingling scenarios and compare their results. Some scenarios show no improvement compared with the previously used single term lexical approach used so far. But when all single term shingles are removed from the dataset the lexical network has properties which are comparable with those from a bibliographic coupling based network. Next, hybrid networks are built based on weighted combination of the two types of similarities with seven different weights. We demonstrate that removing all single term shingles provides the best results at the level of computational feasibility, comparability with bibliographic coupling and also in a community detection application

    Uncertainty avoidance and the exploration-exploitation trade-off

    Purpose - This study aims to investigate how a firm's uncertainty avoidance - as indicated by the headquarters' national culture - impacts firm performance by affecting exploratory (product innovation) and exploitative (brand trademark protection) activities. It aims to show that firms characterized by high levels of uncertainty avoidance may be less competitive in the exploratory product development stage, but may be more competitive in the exploitative commercialization stage by producing more durable brands. Design/methodology/approach - The study uses data from US Software Security Industry (SSI) trademarks, registered by firms from 11 countries during 1993-2000, that provide 2,911 trademarks and a panel of 18,213 observations. It uses the SSI database to identify the number of product innovations introduced by firms. Findings - Results show that uncertainty avoidance lowers the rate of product innovation, but helps firms to appropriate more value by greater protection of their brands. Uncertainty avoidance thus creates an exploration-exploitation trade-off. Practical implications - This study provides useful insights for managers regarding where to locate a firm's front-end development (product innovation) activities and commercialization (brand trademarking protection) activities. Originality/value - This is the first study to demonstrate the influence of a cultural trait on both explorative and exploitative stages simultaneously. As a methodological contribution, it shows how objective, longitudinal brand trademark data can be used to analyze the long-term impact of marketing activities on firm performance

    Nucleotide Substitutions during Speciation may Explain Substitution Rate Variation

    Abstract Although molecular mechanisms associated with the generation of mutations are highly conserved across taxa, there is widespread variation in mutation rates between evolutionary lineages. When phylogenies are reconstructed based on nucleotide sequences, such variation is typically accounted for by the assumption of a relaxed molecular clock, which is a statistical distribution of mutation rates without much underlying biological mechanism. Here, we propose that variation in accumulated mutations may be partly explained by an elevated mutation rate during speciation. Using simulations, we show how shifting mutations from branches to speciation events impacts inference of branching times in phylogenetic reconstruction. Furthermore, the resulting nucleotide alignments are better described by a relaxed than by a strict molecular clock. Thus, elevated mutation rates during speciation potentially explain part of the variation in substitution rates that is observed across the tree of life.     Temperature induced solubility transitions of various poly(2-oxazoline)s in ethanol-water solvent mixtures

    The solution behavior of a series of poly(2-oxazoline)s with different side chains, namely methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, pentyl, hexyl, heptyl, octyl, nonyl, phenyl and benzyl, are reported in ethanol-water solvent mixtures based on turbidimetry investigations. The LCST transitions of poly(2-oxazoline) s with propyl side chains and the UCST transitions of the poly(2-oxazoline) s with more hydrophobic side chains are discussed in relation to the ethanol-water solvent composition and structure. The poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline) s with side chains longer than propyl only dissolved during the first heating run, which is discussed and correlated to the melting transition of the polymers

    Prone sleeping and SUDEP risk: The dynamics of body positions in nonfatal convulsive seizures

    BACKGROUND: Most victims of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) are found prone with signs suggestive of an unwitnessed convulsive seizure (CS). Prone sleeping has been proposed as a risk factor for SUDEP. Little is known, however, about the change of body position during the course of CSs. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed video-EEG data and assessed body positions during the course of CSs, until there was a physical interaction by nursing staff with the subject. RESULTS: We identified 180 CSs in 90 individuals. In 16 of the 180 CSs (9%), the subject started in or turned to the prone position. Of the seven CSs that started in the prone position, three turned to a lateral position during the CS. In 13 CSs, the subject was in prone position at time of nursing intervention; nine (69%) of these started in a nonprone position. DISCUSSION: Our data suggest that the prone position occurs infrequently in closely supervised nonfatal CSs, a notable contrast to the number of victims of SUDEP found prone. Whether prone sleeping prior to CSs increases SUDEP risk, however, remains speculative, as body position during the course of a CS appeared to be dynamic
