    A delay logistic equation with variable growth rate

    A logistic equation with distributed delay is considered in the case where the growth rate oscillates sinusoidally about a positive mean value. A delay kernel is chosen which admits bifurcation of the equilibrium state into a periodic solution when the growth rate is constant. It is shown that the fluctuations in growth rate modulate the bifurcation into a quasiperiodic solution. In certain circumstances, however, it is shown that frequency locking can occur but that this is a local phenomenon which does not persist outside the immediate vicinity of the bifurcation point

    The collaboration network is an example of a social network which has both non-trivial temporal and spatial dependence.     Flickering and Thermal Flicker Waves on Catalytic Wires and Gauzes and in Chemical Reactors

    We present a theoretical investigation of flickering (local temperature fluctuations) and thermal flicker waves in chemical reactors and on catalytic wires and gauzes. It is shown that these phenomena can be caused by harmonic coupling between the chemical kinetics and oscillations in the ambient field. The oscillations can be modeled either by fluctuations in the heat and mass transfer coefficients, or by fluctuations in the gas temperature and concentration

    Managing Self-Confidence: Theory and Experimental Evidence

    Evidence from social psychology suggests that agents process information about their own ability in a biased manner. This evidence has motivated exciting research in behavioral economics, but has also garnered critics who point out that it is potentially consistent with standard Bayesian updating. We implement a direct experimental test. We study a large sample of 656 undergraduate students, tracking the evolution of their beliefs about their own relative performance on an IQ test as they receive noisy feedback from a known data-generating process. Our design lets us repeatedly measure the complete relevant belief distribution incentive-compatibly. We find that subjects (1) place approximately full weight on their priors, but (2) are asymmetric, over-weighting positive feedback relative to negative, and (3) conservative, updating too little in response to both positive and negative signals. These biases are substantially less pronounced in a placebo experiment where ego is not at stake. We also find that (4) a substantial portion of subjects are averse to receiving information about their ability, and that (5) less confident subjects are causally more likely to be averse. We unify these phenomena by showing that they all arise naturally in a simple model of optimally biased Bayesian information processing.

    World citation and collaboration networks: uncovering the role of geography in science

    Modern information and communication technologies, especially the Internet, have diminished the role of spatial distances and territorial boundaries on the access and transmissibility of information. This has enabled scientists for closer collaboration and internationalization. Nevertheless, geography remains an important factor affecting the dynamics of science. Here we present a systematic analysis of citation and collaboration networks between cities and countries, by assigning papers to the geographic locations of their authors' affiliations. The citation flows as well as the collaboration strengths between cities decrease with the distance between them and follow gravity laws. In addition, the total research impact of a country grows linearly with the amount of national funding for research & development. However, the average impact reveals a peculiar threshold effect: the scientific output of a country may reach an impact larger than the world average only if the country invests more than about 100,000 USD per researcher annually.Comment: Published version. 9 pages, 5 figures + Appendix, The world citation and collaboration networks at both city and country level are available at http://becs.aalto.fi/~rajkp/datasets.htm

    Stationary solutions of driven fourth- and sixth-order Cahn-Hilliard type equations

    New types of stationary solutions of a one-dimensional driven sixth-order Cahn-Hilliard type equation that arises as a model for epitaxially growing nano-structures such as quantum dots, are derived by an extension of the method of matched asymptotic expansions that retains exponentially small terms. This method yields analytical expressions for far-field behavior as well as the widths of the humps of these spatially non-monotone solutions in the limit of small driving force strength which is the deposition rate in case of epitaxial growth. These solutions extend the family of the monotone kink and antikink solutions. The hump spacing is related to solutions of the Lambert WW function. Using phase space analysis for the corresponding fifth-order dynamical system, we use a numerical technique that enables the efficient and accurate tracking of the solution branches, where the asymptotic solutions are used as initial input. Additionally, our approach is first demonstrated for the related but simpler driven fourth-order Cahn-Hilliard equation, also known as the convective Cahn-Hilliard equation
