    Are would-be authoritarians right? Democratic support and citizens’ left-right self-placement in former left- and right- authoritarian countries

    Conventional wisdom dictates that the more citizens lean toward either end of the ideological spectrum, the lower their support for democracy. The main model pitted against this ‘rigidity-of-the-extremes model’ is the ‘rigidity-of-the-right model’. This model assumes that rightist citizens are less supportive. This study proposes and empirically demonstrates the validity of an alternative model, which we call ‘the authoritarian legacy model’. This model predicts that whether leftist or rightist citizens are less supportive of democracy depends on countries’ experience with left- or right- authoritarianism. To evaluate its validity, we present a systematic comparative investigation of the relation between citizens’ ideological and democratic beliefs, using European and World Values Survey data from 38 European countries (N = 105,495; 1994-2008). In line with this model, our analyses demonstrate that democratic support is lowest among leftist citizens in former left-authoritarian countries and among rightist citizens in former right-authoritarian countries. We find that this relation persists even among generations that grew up after authoritarian rule. These findings suggest that traditional ideological rigidity models are unsuitable for the study of citizens’ democratic beliefs

    Moving in and out of poverty: The within-individual association between socioeconomic status and juvenile delinquency

    A family's SES can be changeable over time. This study was the first to investigate if such within-individual changes in family SES are associated with parallel fluctuations in boys' delinquent behavior from childhood to adolescence. Participants were a community sample of boys and their caregivers (N = 503) who were assessed annually for ten consecutive years spanning ages 7-18. Fixed effects models revealed that changes in familial SES were related to changes in delinquency: Youths were more likely to offend during years in which their parents' SES was lower than during years in which their parents' SES was higher. Contrary to expectations, we found no evidence that this association was accounted for by families moving to different neighborhoods or by changes in parenting. Since withinindividual models provide a stricter test of causality than between-individual models, these findings support claims that impacting familial SES may have a direct effect on youths' delinquency.     Design of Group IIA Secreted/Synovial Phospholipase A2 Inhibitors: An Oxadiazolone Derivative Suppresses Chondrocyte Prostaglandin E2 Secretion

    Group IIA secreted/synovial phospholipase A2 (GIIAPLA2) is an enzyme involved in the synthesis of eicosanoids such as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), the main eicosanoid contributing to pain and inflammation in rheumatic diseases. We designed, by molecular modeling, 7 novel analogs of 3-{4-[5(indol-1-yl)pentoxy]benzyl}-4H-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-one, denoted C1, an inhibitor of the GIIAPLA2 enzyme. We report the results of molecular dynamics studies of the complexes between these derivatives and GIIAPLA2, along with their chemical synthesis and results from PLA2 inhibition tests. Modeling predicted some derivatives to display greater GIIAPLA2 affinities than did C1, and such predictions were confirmed by in vitro PLA2 enzymatic tests. Compound C8, endowed with the most favorable energy balance, was shown experimentally to be the strongest GIIAPLA2 inhibitor. Moreover, it displayed an anti-inflammatory activity on rabbit articular chondrocytes, as shown by its capacity to inhibit IL-1ÎČ-stimulated PGE2 secretion in these cells. Interestingly, it did not modify the COX-1 to COX-2 ratio. C8 is therefore a potential candidate for anti-inflammatory therapy in joints

    Circulating microRNA Profiles during the Bovine Oestrous Cycle

    Up to 50% of ovulations go undetected in modern dairy herds due to attenuated oestrus behavior and a lack of high-accuracy methods for detection of fertile oestrus. This significantly reduces overall herd productivity and constitutes a high economic burden to the dairy industry. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are ubiquitous regulators of gene expression during both health and disease and they have been shown to regulate different reproductive processes. Extracellular miRNAs are stable and can provide useful biomarkers of tissue function; changes in circulating miRNA profiles have been reported during menstrual cycles. This study sought to establish the potential of circulating miRNAs as biomarkers of oestrus in cattle. We collected plasma samples from 8 Holstein-Friesian heifers on days Days 0, 8 and 16 of an oestrous cycle and analysed small RNA populations on each Day using two independent high-throughput approaches, namely, Illumina sequencing (n = 24 samples) and Qiagen PCR arrays (n = 9 sample pools, 3-4 samples / pool). Subsequently, we used RT-qPCR (n = 24 samples) to validate the results of high-throughput analyses, as well as to establish the expression profiles of additional miRNAs previously reported to be differentially expressed during reproductive cycles. Overall, we identified four miRNAs (let-7f, miR-125b, miR-145 and miR-99a-5p), the plasma levels of which distinctly increased (up to 2.2-fold, P < 0.05) during oestrus (Day 0) relative to other stages of the cycle (Days 8 and 16). Moreover, we identified several hundred different isomiRs and established their relative abundance in bovine plasma. In summary, our results reveal the dynamic nature of plasma miRNAs during the oestrous cycle and provide evidence of the feasibility of using circulating miRNAs as biomarkers of reproductive function in livestock in the future

    Scaling relationships based on partition coefficients and body sizes have similarities and interactions

    The LC50 of compounds with a similar biological effect, at a given exposure period, is frequently plotted log-log against the octanol-water partition coefficient and a straight line is fitted for interpolation purposes. This is also frequently done for physiological properties, such as the weight-specific respiration rate, as function of the body weight of individuals. This paper focuses on the remarkable observation that theoretical explanations for these relationships also have strong similarities. Both can be understood as result of the covariation of the values of parameters of models of a particular type for the underlying processes, while this covariation follows logically from the model structure. The one-compartment model for the uptake and elimination of compounds by organisms is basic to the BioConcentration Factor (BCF), or the partition coefficient; the standard Dynamic Energy Budget model is basic to the (ultimate) body size. The BCF is the ratio of the uptake and the elimination rates; the maximum body length is the ratio of the assimilation (i.e. uptake of resources) and the maintenance (i.e. use of resources) rates. This paper discusses some shortcomings of descriptive approaches and conceptual aspects of theoretical explanations. The strength of the theory is in the combination of why metabolic transformation depends both on the BCF and the body size. We illustrate the application of the theory with several data sets from the literature

    Hurunui river catchment nitrate nitrogen dynamics examined using continuous concentration monitoring

    The middle reaches of the Hurunui River passes through the Culverden tectonic basin before cutting through another basement rock gorge on its way to the Pacific Ocean. The Culverden basin contains flat and rolling land for irrigated pasture and pine plantations. Current proposals for former forestry land would increase the irrigation extent, grazing intensity and conversion of plantation forestry to grazing agriculture. Ngāi Tahu Property Limited is a Māori incorporation owning the Balmoral Forest and interests in expansion of grazed agriculture. Te Rƫnanga o Ngāi Tahu is the iwi authority representing the rƫnanga and hapƫ covering the Hurunui River and Culverden basin, as well as owning Ngāi Tahu Property Limited. The authors have been working alongside both organisations to characterize the water quality trends and nutrient volumes moving through the Hurunui River system
