    Composite-type Rb-87 optical-pumping light source for the rubidium frequency standard

    The light source is composed of a cylindrical Rb-87 lamp 10 mm diameter and a Rb-85 filter cell 3-7 mm long attached to the front flat face of the lamp. This composite type device is operated in an oven at about 100 C. Thus a light source for Rb-87 hyperfine optical pumping less than 4 cm long by 3 cm diameter was constructed

    Runge gave the ring of genus three Siegel modular forms as a quotient ring, 3=hJ(3)i. R3 is the genus three ring of code polynomials and J(3) is the di®erence of he weight enumerators for the e8 © e8 and d+ 6 codes. Freitag and Oura gave a degree 24 elation, R(4) , of the corresponding ideal in genus four; R(4) is also a linear combination of eight enumerators. We take another step toward the ring of Siegel modular forms in genus our. We explain new techniques for computing with Siegel modular forms and actually ompute six new relations, classifying all relations through degree 32. We show that the local odimension of any irreducible component de¯ned by these known relations is at least 3 and hat the true ideal of relations in genus four is not a complete intersection. Also, we explain ow to generate an in¯nite set of relations by symmetrizing ¯rst order theta identities and ive one example in degree 32. We give the generating function of R5 and use it to reprove esults of Nebe [25] and Salvati Manni [37]

    Out-of-plane nesting driven spin spiral in ultrathin Fe/Cu(001) films

    Epitaxial ultrathin Fe films on fcc Cu(001) exhibit a spin spiral (SS), in contrast to the ferromagnetism of bulk bcc Fe. We study the in-plane and out-of-plane Fermi surfaces (FSs) of the SS in 8 monolayer Fe/Cu(001) films using energy dependent soft x-ray momentum-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We show that the SS originates in nested regions confined to out-of-plane FSs, which are drastically modified compared to in-plane FSs. From precise reciprocal space maps in successive zones, we obtain the associated real space compressive strain of 1.5+-0.5% along c-axis. An autocorrelation analysis quantifies the incommensurate ordering vector q=(2pi/a)(0,0,~0.86), favoring a SS and consistent with magneto-optic Kerr effect experiments. The results reveal the importance of in-plane and out-of-plane FS mapping for ultrathin films.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Three-dimensional bulk band dispersion in polar BiTeI with giant Rashba-type spin splitting

    In layered polar semiconductor BiTeI, giant Rashba-type spin-split band dispersions show up due to the crystal structure asymmetry and the strong spin-orbit interaction. Here we investigate the 3-dimensional (3D) bulk band structures of BiTeI using the bulk-sensitive hνh\nu-dependent soft x-ray angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES). The obtained band structure is shown to be well reproducible by the first-principles calculations, with huge spin splittings of 300{\sim}300 meV at the conduction-band-minimum and valence-band-maximum located in the kz=π/ck_z=\pi/c plane. It provides the first direct experimental evidence of the 3D Rashba-type spin splitting in a bulk compound.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    Temperature-Dependence of Magnetically-Active Charge Excitations in Magnetite across the Verwey Transition

    We have studied the electronic structure of bulk single crystals and epitaxial films of magnetite Fe3_3O4_4. Fe 2p2p core-level spectra show clear differences between hard x-ray (HAX-) and soft x-ray (SX-) photoemission spectroscopy (PES), indicative of surface effects. The bulk-sensitive spectra exhibit temperature (TT)-dependent charge excitations across the Verwey transition at TVT_V=122 K, which is missing in the surface-sensitive spectra. An extended impurity Anderson model full-multiplet analysis reveals roles of the three distinct Fe-species (A-Fe3+^{3+}, B-Fe2+^{2+}, B-Fe3+^{3+}) below TVT_V for the Fe 2p2p spectra, and its TT-dependent evolution. The Fe 2p2p HAXPES spectra show a clear magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the metallic phase of magnetized 100-nm-thick films. The model calculations also reproduce the MCD and identify the magnetically distinct sites associated with the charge excitations. Valence band HAXPES shows finite density of states at EFE_F for the polaronic metal with remnant order above TVT_V, and a clear gap formation below TVT_V. The results indicate that the Verwey transition is driven by changes in the strongly correlated and magnetically active B-Fe2+^{2+} and B-Fe3+^{3+} electronic states, consistent with resistivity and bulk-sensitive optical spectra.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures Accepted in Physical Review Letter

    Evidence for Transmission of Bluetongue Virus Serotype 26 through Direct Contact

    The aim of this study was to assess the mechanisms of transmission of bluetongue virus serotype 26 (BTV-26) in goats. A previous study, which investigated the pathogenicity and infection kinetics of BTV-26 in goats, unexpectedly revealed that one control goat may have been infected through a direct contact transmission route. To investigate the transmission mechanisms of BTV-26 in more detail an experimental infection study was carried out in which three goats were infected with BTV-26, three goats were kept uninfected, but were housed in direct contact with the infected goats, and an additional four goats were kept in indirect contact separated from infected goats by metal gates. This barrier allowed the goats to have occasional face-to-face contact in the same airspace, but feeding, watering, sampling and environmental cleaning was carried out separately. The three experimentally infected goats did not show clinical signs of BTV, however high levels of viral RNA were detected and virus was isolated from their blood. At 21 dpi viral RNA was detected in, and virus was isolated from the blood of the three direct contact goats, which also seroconverted. The four indirect barrier contact goats remained uninfected throughout the duration of the experiment. In order to assess replication in a laboratory model species of Culicoides biting midge, more than 300 Culicoides sonorensis were fed a BTV-26 spiked blood meal and incubated for 7 days. The dissemination of BTV-26 in individual C. sonorensis was inferred from the quantity of virus RNA and indicated that none of the insects processed at day 7 possessed transmissible infections. This study shows that BTV-26 is easily transmitted through direct contact transmission between goats, and the strain does not seem to replicate in C. sonorensis midges using standard incubation conditions
