Theory of tunneling spectroscopy of normal metal/ferromagnet/spin-triplet superconductor junctions

We study the tunneling conductance of a ballistic normal metal / ferromagnet / spin-triplet superconductor junction using the extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk formalism as a model for a cc-axis oriented Au / SrRuO3_{3} / Sr2_{2}RuO4_{4} junction. We compare chiral pp-wave (CPW) and helical pp-wave (HPW) pair potentials, combined with ferromagnet magnetization directions parallel and perpendicular to the interface. For fixed θM\theta_{M}, where θM\theta_{M} is a direction of magnetization in the ferromagnet measured from the cc-axis, the tunneling conductance of CPW and HPW clearly show different voltage dependencies. It is found that the cases where the dd-vector is perpendicular to the magnetization direction (CPW with θM=π/2\theta_{M} = \pi/2 and HPW with θM=0\theta_{M} = 0) are identical. The obtained results serve as a guide to determine the pairing symmetry of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2_{2}RuO4_{4}.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. There is also a supplementary (not uploaded

    Vibrational analysis of Ag3(PO2NH)3, Na3(PO2NH)3.H2O, Na3(PO2NH)3.4H2O, [C(NH2)3]3(PO2NH)3.H2O and (NH4)4(PO2NH)4.4H2O

FT IR and FT Raman spectra of Ag3(PO2NH), (Compound I), Na3(PO2NH)3.H2O (Compound II), Na3(PO2NH)3.4H2O (Compound III), [C(NH2)3]3(PO2NH)3.H2O (Compound IV) and (NH4)4(PO2NH)4.4H2O (Compound V) are recorded and analyzed on the basis of the anions, cations and water molecules present in each of them. The PO2NH− anion ring in compound I is distorted due to the influence of Ag+ cation. Wide variation in the hydrogen bond lengths in compound III is indicated by the splitting of the v2 and v3 modes of vibration of water molecules. The NH4 ion in compound V occupies lower site symmetry and exhibits hindered rotation in the lattice. The correlations between the symmetric and asymmetric stretching vibrations of P-N-P bridge and the P-N-P bond angle have also been discussed

Spin-orbit coupling suppression and singlet-state blocking of spin-triplet Cooper pairs

An inhomogeneous magnetic exchange field at a superconductor/ferromagnet interface converts spin-singlet Cooper pairs to a spin-polarized triplet state. Although the decay envelope of triplet pairs within ferromagnetic materials is well studied, little is known about their decay in nonmagnetic metals and superconductors and, in particular, in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we investigate devices in which singlet and triplet supercurrents propagate into the s-wave superconductor Nb. In the normal state of Nb, triplet supercurrents decay over a distance of 5 nm, which is an order of magnitude smaller than the decay of spin-singlet pairs due to the SOC. In the superconducting state of Nb, triplet supercurrents are not able to couple with the singlet wave function and are thus blocked by the absence of available equilibrium states in the singlet gap. The results offer insight into the dynamics between s-wave singlet and s-wave triplet states

    Spin-transport in superconductors

Spin-transport in superconductors is a subject of fundamental and technical importance with the potential for applications in superconducting-based cryogenic memory and logic. Research in this area is rapidly intensifying with recent discoveries establishing the field of superconducting spintronics. In this perspective we provide an overview of the experimental state-of-the-art with a particular focus on local and nonlocal spin-transport in superconductors, and propose device schemes to demonstrate the viability of superconducting spin-based devices.Comment: Accepted in APL Perspective

Significant decline of Daphnia magna population biomass due to microplastic exposure

Even though microplastics are intensively studied, the focus of the research is mainly on relatively short term effects at high doses. Therefore there is a need to shift the focus toward more realistic, longer-term endpoints. Studies with a range of chemicals have shown that the response of populations often differs from studies in which a single organism is exposed in an individual container (as often described within standard ecotox screening assays). Here we investigate the impact of primary microplastics (1–5 μm in size) on a population of Daphnia magna. We first allowed a stable population of D. magna to develop over 29 d, after which the populations were exposed to microplastics for three weeks (concentrations ranging from 102 to 105 particles mL−1 and a control). We found a significant impact of microplastics on the total population of D. magna, with a reduction in the amount of adult daphnids. Importantly, when expressed as total biomass, exposure to 105 microplastics mL−1 resulted in a 21% reduction in total biomass compared to control. These results indicate that exposure to microplastics can result in significant adverse effects on the population of D. magna, including a reduction in the number of individuals as well as total biomass. Given the importance of D. magna in freshwater food webs, both as a grazer as well as a food source, this can potentially impact the functioning of the ecosystem

Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of our treatment protocol for geotropic and apogeotropic horizontal canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (h-BPPV).Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients with newly diagnosed geotropic and apogeotropic h-BPPV who visited our clinic between July 2017 and December 2019. Patients were treated according to our treatment protocol, which was implemented in 2017. Patients with geotropic h-BPPV were preferably treated with the Gufoni maneuver. In patients with apogeotropic h-BPPV we executed the modified Gufoni maneuver to achieve conversion to the geotropic type. We looked at the number of successful treatments and the number of recurrences within 1 year. Results: We included 102 patients with h-BPPV, 62 (61%) of whom were treated for geotropic h-BPPV. The ratio of apogeotropic to geotropic h-BPPV was 0.65. After the first visit, we observed resolution of horizontal canal BPPV in 71 and 63% of the geotropic and the apogeotropic group, respectively. After the second visit, this percentage increased to 92% for geotropic h-BPPV and 78% for apogeotropic h-BPPV. After 1 year of follow-up we determined a recurrence rate of 32 and 24% for the geotropic and apogeotropic group, respectively. Conclusion: With our treatment protocol we managed to achieve high rates of symptom resolution in the geotropic and apogeotropic type of h-BPPV with acceptable recurrence rates. We observed a relatively high ratio of apogeotropic h-BPPV to geotropic h-BPPV.Disorders of the head and nec

Highly Crystalline and Semiconducting Imine-Based Two-Dimensional Polymers Enabled by Interfacial Synthesis

Single‐layer and multi‐layer 2D polyimine films have been achieved through interfacial synthesis methods. However, it remains a great challenge to achieve the maximum degree of crystallinity in the 2D polyimines, which largely limits the long‐range transport properties. Here we employ a surfactant‐monolayer‐assisted interfacial synthesis (SMAIS) method for the successful preparation of porphyrin and triazine containing polyimine‐based 2D polymer (PI‐2DP) films with square and hexagonal lattices, respectively. The synthetic PI‐2DP films are featured with polycrystalline multilayers with tunable thickness from 6 to 200 nm and large crystalline domains (100–150 nm in size). Intrigued by high crystallinity and the presence of electroactive porphyrin moieties, the optoelectronic properties of PI‐2DP are investigated by time‐resolved terahertz spectroscopy. Typically, the porphyrin‐based PI‐2DP 1 film exhibits a p‐type semiconductor behavior with a band gap of 1.38 eV and hole mobility as high as 0.01 cm2 V−1 s−1, superior to the previously reported polyimine based materials
