Critical velocities c/3c/\sqrt 3 and c/2c/\sqrt 2 in general theory of relativity

We consider a few thought experiments of radial motion of massive particles in the gravitational fields outside and inside various celestial bodies: Earth, Sun, black hole. All other interactions except gravity are disregarded. For the outside motion there exists a critical value of coordinate velocity vc=c/3{\rm v}_c = c/\sqrt 3: particles with v<vc{\rm v} < {\rm v}_c are accelerated by the field, like Newtonian apples, particles with v>vc{\rm v} > {\rm v}_c are decelerated like photons. Particles moving inside a body with constant density have no critical velocity; they are always accelerated. We consider also the motion of a ball inside a tower, when it is thrown from the top (bottom) of the tower and after classically bouncing at the bottom (top) comes back to the original point. The total time of flight is the same in these two cases if the initial proper velocity v0v_0 is equal to c/2c/\sqrt 2.Comment: 13 page

The quantity Îľ\xi introduced recently in the phenomenological description of neutrino oscillations is in fact not a free parameter, but a fixed number.Comment: 2 pages, LaTeX 2e style articl

Baryon Fields with U_L(3) \times U_R(3) Chiral Symmetry: Axial Currents of Nucleons and Hyperons

We use the conventional F and D octet and decimet generator matrices to reformulate chiral properties of local (non-derivative) and one-derivative non-local fields of baryons consisting of three quarks with flavor SU(3) symmetry that were expressed in SU(3) tensor form in Ref. [12]. We show explicitly the chiral transformations of the [(6,3)\oplus(3,6)] chiral multiplet in the "SU(3) particle basis", for the first time to our knowledge, as well as those of the (3,\bar{3}) \oplus (\bar{3}, 3), (8,1) \oplus (1,8) multiplets, which have been recorded before in Refs. [4,5]. We derive the vector and axial-vector Noether currents, and show explicitly that their zeroth (charge-like) components close the SU_L(3) \times SU_R(3) chiral algebra. We use these results to study the effects of mixing of (three-quark) chiral multiplets on the axial current matrix elements of hyperons and nucleons. We show, in particular, that there is a strong correlation, indeed a definite relation between the flavor-singlet (i.e. the zeroth), the isovector (the third) and the eighth flavor component of the axial current, which is in decent agreement with the measured ones.Comment: one typo correction, and accepted by PR

Fertility transition in England and Wales: continuity and change

    No full text
The focus of this paper is whether the transition from high to low fertility reveals continuity or discontinuity with the past. Our analyses of districts of England and Wales over time reveal an overall picture of continuity. Specifically, we show that (1) a substantial proportion of districts experienced pretransition variations in marital fertility that were so large that they are suggestive of deliberate fertility control; (2) the changes over time in the distributions of marital fertility levels and the relative importance of marital fertility levels to the determination of overall fertility levels were gradual and smooth; (3) the proportion of districts dominated by marital fertiliity variation, as opposed to nuptiality variation, increased gradually over time, and both marital fertility and nuptiality variations were present in all periods considered; and (4) there are important relationships between changes over time in marital fertility and socio-economic variables in periods both before and after the transition. The last conclusion is based on our estimated equations from the pooled cross-sectional, time-series data. Moreover, these estimated equations reveal relationships between changes in specific explanatory variables and changes in marital fertility that are very similar both before and after the onset of the transition

CP violation in unpolarized e^+ e^- to charginos at one loop level

We study CP violation in e^+ e^- to \tilde\chi_i^+\tilde\chi_j^- in the framework of the MSSM. Though the cross section of this process is CP-even at the tree level even for polarized electron-positron beams, we show that it contains a CP-odd part at the one loop order and there are CP-odd observables that can in principle be measured even using unpolarized electron-positron beams. The relevant diagram calculations are briefly discussed and the results of selected (box) diagram computations are shown.Comment: similar to Phys. Rev. D version, but corrected figs. 4, 5, 6 (factor four

A Three-dimensional Deformable Brain Atlas for DBS Targeting. I. Methodology for Atlas Creation and Artifact Reduction.

    Get PDF
BackgroundTargeting in deep brain stimulation (DBS) relies heavily on the ability to accurately localize particular anatomic brain structures. Direct targeting of subcortical structures has been limited by the ability to visualize relevant DBS targets. Methods and resultsIn this work, we describe the development and implementation, of a methodology utilized to create a three dimensional deformable atlas for DBS surgery. This atlas was designed to correspond to the print version of the Schaltenbrand-Bailey atlas structural contours. We employed a smoothing technique to reduce artifacts inherent in the print version.ConclusionsWe present the methodology used to create a three dimensional patient specific DBS atlas which may in the future be tested for clinical utility

Interplay of gravitation and linear superposition of different mass eigenstates

    Get PDF
The interplay of gravitation and the quantum-mechanical principle of linear superposition induces a new set of neutrino oscillation phases. These ensure that the flavor-oscillation clocks, inherent in the phenomenon of neutrino oscillations, redshift precisely as required by Einstein's theory of gravitation. The physical observability of these phases in the context of the solar neutrino anomaly, type-II supernovae, and certain atomic systems is briefly discussed
