Effect of bacteria on pre-formed and nascent biofilms of Irpex lacteus

Fungal biofilms are applicable to removal of pollutants in biofilters in nonsterile conditions but the bacterial effect is poorly known. Interactions between fungal and bacterial organisms were investigated in preformed or nascent biofilms and the enzyme activities and degradation capacity measured. Different effects of Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa on degradation of an anthraquinone dye by fungal biofilms colonizing polyurethane foam (PUF) in the presence of bacteria (104-106 CFU) at pH 4.5 and 6 were observed in a 10-day experiment: the former bacterium inhibited degradation whereas the latter not. Production of peroxidases but not of laccase was reduced; the bacteria could not remove the dye. The fungal biomass amount colonizing PUF was unaffected by bacteria, E. coli and P. aeruginosa increased their respective counts by 1 to 3 and 0 to 2 orders of magnitude. In contrast, the degradation capacity (85-95% decolorization rate at pH 5.5) of preformed 1-week-old fungal biofilms colonizing PUF or pinewood was not affected by the added 106 CFU of E.coli in a 4-week experiment. The fungal growth was reduced 1.4-fold and bacterial counts increased up to 2-fold compared to bacterial controls. The results demonstrate a significant resistance of preformed I. lacteus biofilms to bacterial stress which is important for practical application. The work was supported by the project IAAX00200901

First association of scale insects (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) with \u3ci\u3eSalacia crassifolia\u3c/i\u3e (Mart. Ex Schult.) G. Don. (Celastraceae)

Salacia crassifolia (Mart. ex Schult.) G.Don., (Celastraceae) is a native species of shrub/tree highly appreciated in Brazil for its fruits and medicinal properties. Scale insects have never been reported associated with S. crassifolia; nevertheless, this paper describes the occurrence of two diaspidids on S. crassifolia leaves in Brazil. Three mature trees were inspected in February and March 2018 and scale insect samples were collected and preserved in 70% alcohol, then mounted and identified under an optical microscope. Two species of scale insects were found associated with this plant, Pseudoparlatoria argentata Hempel and Melanaspis aristotelesi Lepage and Giannotti, both from the family Diaspididae (Hemiptera). The three observed trees were infested by the diaspidids, with some leaves completely colonized by both species. This is the first reported occurrence of P. argentata and M. aristotelesi in plants of the Celastraceae family. It is also the first report of these insects in the Distrito Federal, Brazil, expanding the distribution and hosts in native plant species of the Cerrado biome

Effect of Alternating Magnetic Field on the Fatigue Behaviour of EN8 Steel and 2014-T6 Aluminium Alloy

The application of an alternating magnetic field (0.54 T) was observed to lead to an improvement in the fatigue endurance and an increase in Vickers microhardness and tensile strength of both EN8 steel and AA2014-T6 alloy. Fractography using scanning electron microscopy showed evidence of more ductile fracture features after treatment in contrast to untreated samples. The results of X-ray diffraction indicated formation of more compressive residual stresses following treatment; while examination by transmission electron microscopy showed evidence of fewer dislocations. In the case of the AA2014-T6 alloy; GP zones were also generated by the alternating magnetic field. However; the temperature increase during the treatment was too low to explain these observations. The results were attributed to the non-thermal effect of the alternating magnetic field treatment that led to depinning and movement of dislocations and secondary precipitation of copper

Malignant schwannoma of the soft palate: a case report

Characterisation and Evaluation of the Mechanical Behaviour of Endodontic-grade NiTi Wires

With the introduction of new materials and advances in medical science, the endodontic files have changed since the early days of root canal treatments. In the late days, we have seen an increasing use of Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) alloys, to the detriment of more conventional alloys. At body temperature, NiTi alloys present a superelastic behaviour, which allows to be more effective in the removal of the tooth pulp tissue, and in the protection of the tooth structure. Anyhow, these NiTi instruments will eventually fracture, usually without any visual signal of degradation. Thus, there is a need of studying these alloys, as they present a high hysteresis cycle and non-linearities in the Elastic domain. Currently, there is no international standard to test NiTi endodontic files, so various authors have attempted to design systems that can test them under fatigue loads, usually based on empirical setups. Following a systematic approach, this work presents the results of rotary fatigue tests for two Alfa Aesar® Nitinol wires with different diameters (0.58mm and 0.25mm).The formulation is presented, where the material strength reduction can be quantified from the determination of the strain and the number of cycles until failure, as well numerical FEM simulation to verify the analytical model predictions
