Magic numbers in exotic nuclei and spin-isospin properties of {\it NN} interaction
The magic numbers in exotic nuclei are discussed, and their novel origin is
shown to be the spin-isospin dependent part of the nucleon-nucleon interaction
in nuclei. The importance and robustness of this mechanism is shown in terms of
meson exchange, G-matrix and QCD theories. In neutron-rich exotic nuclei, magic
numbers such as N = 8, 20, etc. can disappear, while N = 6, 16, etc. arise,
affecting the structure of lightest exotic nuclei to nucleosynthesis of heavy

Gut thinking: the gut microbiome and mental health beyond the head
Background: In recent decades, dominant models of mental illness have become increasingly focused on the head, with mental disorders being figured as brain disorders. However, research into the active role that the microbiome-gut-brain axis plays in affecting mood and behaviour may lead to the conclusion that mental health is more than an internalised problem of individual brains.
Objective: This article explores the implications of shifting understandings about mental health that have come about through research into links between the gut microbiome and mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. It aims to analyse the different ways that the lines between mind and body and mental and physical health are re-shaped by this research, which is starting to inform clinical and public understanding.
Design: As mental health has become a pressing issue of political and public concern it has become increasingly constructed in socio-cultural and personal terms beyond clinical spaces, requiring a conceptual response that exceeds biomedical inquiry. This article argues that an interdisciplinary critical medical humanities approach is well positioned to analyse the impact of microbiome-gut-brain research on conceptions of mind.
Results: The entanglement of mind and matter evinced by microbiome-gut-brain axis research potentially provides a different way to conceptualise the physical and social concomitants of mental distress.
Conclusion: Mental health is not narrowly located in the head but is assimilated by the physical body and intermingled with the natural world, requiring different methods of research to unfold the meanings and implications of gut thinking for conceptions of human selfhood
Two-Particle Correlations in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions
Two-particle momentum correlations between pairs of identical particles
produced in relativistic heavy-ion reactions can be analyzed to extract the
space-time structure of the collision fireball. We review recent progress in
the application of this method, based on newly developed theoretical tools and
new high-quality data from heavy-ion collision experiments. Implications for
our understanding of the collision dynamics and for the search for the

Reducing uncertainty in the assessment of the Australian spanner crab fishery
In collaboration with the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries we compared the effectiveness of the spanner crab monitoring systems used by New South Wales and Queensland and developed a fishery-independent survey protocol acceptable to both states.
The objectives of this project were to:
1. Determine the age at which spanner crabs (Ranina ranina) recruit to the fishery
2. Develop a common methodology for monitoring and assessing the Australian spanner crab stock
3. Investigate sources of variability in apparent population density
A single center phase II study of ixazomib in patients with relapsed or refractory cutaneous or peripheral T‐cell lymphomas
The transcription factor GATA‐3, highly expressed in many cutaneous T‐cell lymphoma (CTCL) and peripheral T‐cell lymphomas (PTCL), confers resistance to chemotherapy in a cell‐autonomous manner. As GATA‐3 is transcriptionally regulated by NF‐κB, we sought to determine the extent to which proteasomal inhibition impairs NF‐κB activation and GATA‐3 expression and cell viability in malignant T cells. Proteasome inhibition, NF‐κB activity, GATA‐3 expression, and cell viability were examined in patient‐derived cell lines and primary T‐cell lymphoma specimens ex vivo treated with the oral proteasome inhibitor ixazomib. Significant reductions in cell viability, NF‐κB activation, and GATA‐3 expression were observed preclinically in ixazomib‐treated cells. Therefore, an investigator‐initiated, single‐center, phase II study with this agent in patients with relapsed/refractory CTCL/PTCL was conducted. Concordant with our preclinical observations, a significant reduction in NF‐κB activation and GATA‐3 expression was observed in an exceptional responder following one month of treatment with ixazomib. While ixazomib had limited activity in this small and heterogeneous cohort of patients, inhibition of the NF‐κB/GATA‐3 axis in a single exceptional responder suggests that ixazomib may have utility in appropriately selected patients or in combination with other agents.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/139920/1/ajh24895.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/139920/2/ajh24895_am.pd
The Challenges in Gravitational Wave Astronomy for Space-Based Detectors
The Gravitational Wave (GW) universe contains a wealth of sources which, with
the proper treatment, will open up the universe as never before. By observing
massive black hole binaries to high redshifts, we should begin to explore the
formation process of seed black holes and track galactic evolution to the
present day. Observations of extreme mass ratio inspirals will allow us to
explore galactic centers in the local universe, as well as providing tests of
General Relativity and constraining the value of Hubble's constant. The
detection of compact binaries in our own galaxy may allow us to model stellar
evolution in the Milky Way. Finally, the detection of cosmic (super)strings and
a stochastic background would help us to constrain cosmological models.
However, all of this depends on our ability to not only resolve sources and
carry out parameter estimation, but also on our ability to define an optimal
data analysis strategy. In this presentation, I will examine the challenges

Source Dimensions in Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions
Recent experiments on pion correlations, interpreted as interferometric
measurements of the collision zone, are compared with models that distinguish a
prehadronic phase and a hadronic phase. The models include prehadronic
longitudinal expansion, conversion to hadrons in local kinetic equilibrium, and
rescattering of the produced hadrons. We find that the longitudinal and outward
radii are surprisingly sensitive to the algorithm used for two-body collisions.
The longitudinal radius measured in collisions of 200 GeV/u sulfur nuclei on a
heavy target requires the existence of a prehadronic phase which converts to
the hadronic phase at densities around 0.8-1.0 GeV/fm. The transverse radii
cannot be reproduced without introducing more complex dynamics into the

A Multicenter Study of Bacterial Vaginosis in Women With or at Risk for Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection
Background: Bacterial vaginosis is a common gynecologic infection that has been associated with a variety of gynecologic and obstetric complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease, postabortal infection and premature delivery. Recent studies suggest that bacterial vaginosis may increase a woman’s risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We undertook this study to assess whether the prevalence and characteristics of bacterial vaginosis differed according to HIV status in high-risk US women. Methods: Prevalence of bacterial vaginosis was assessed by Gram’s stain and clinical criteria for 854 HIV-infected and 434 HIV-uninfected women enrolled in the HIV Epidemiology Research (HER) Study.Multiple logistic regression techniques were used to determine whether HIV infection independently predicted bacterial vaginosis. Results: Almost half (46%) the women had bacterial vaginosis by Gram’s stain. The prevalence of bacterial vaginosis was 47% in the HIV-positive women compared with 44% in the HIV-negativewomen; this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.36). After adjustment for other covariates, HIV-positive women were more likely than HIV-negative women to have bacterial vaginosis (odds ratio (OR) 1.31; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.01-1.70) by Gram's stain but not by clinical criteria (OR 1.16; CI 0.87-1.55). Among HIV-positive women, use of antiretroviral drugs was associated with a lower prevalence of bacterial vaginosis (adjusted OR 0.54; Cl 0.38 -0.77). The Ital-FLAMES survey of the Sagittarius dwarf Spheroidal galaxy. I. Chemical abundances of bright RGB stars
We present iron and element (Mg, Ca, Ti) abundances for a sample of
15 Red Giant Branch stars belonging to the main body of the Sagittarius dwarf
Spheroidal galaxy. Abundances have been obtained from spectra collected using
the high resolution spectrograph FLAMES-UVES mounted at the VLT. Stars of our
sample have a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-0.410.20 with a metal poor tail
extending to [Fe/H]=-1.52. The element abundance ratios are slightly
subsolar for metallicities higher than [Fe/H]\gtsima-1, suggesting a slow star
formation rate. The [/Fe] of stars having [Fe/H]-1 are compatible to

Evaluating a research capacity strengthening program for Aboriginal community-controlled health organisations
A Masterclass Program was developed to strengthen the research capacity of staff within Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) and featured three Masterclasses delivered across Australia, including Understanding Research, Undertaking Research and Research Evaluation. A mixed-method process and impact evaluation of the Masterclass Program was undertaken. The process evaluation examined the reach of the Program and the impact evaluation comprised an online survey (n=45) and semi-structured interviews (n=21) with Masterclass participants. During 2014-17, 27 Masterclasses were delivered to 260 people, including predominantly ACCHO personnel but also Indigenous doctors and research institute staff who work closely with the ACCHO sector. Most survey respondents felt the Masterclasses improved their understanding of research and their willingness to participate in and undertake research. The qualitative analysis confirmed this and suggested that Masterclasses were implemented in a supportive learning environment which led to increased research capacity (increased research awareness, changed perceptions, increased understanding, critical thinking and new confidence) and ultimately enhanced research engagement (willingness to participate, motivating others, empowered critique of research partners and proposals, interest in further research training).
