    Comparación in vitro de aciclovir, ganciclovir y cidofovir contra alfa-herpesvirus equino 3 y evaluación de la eficacia de los mismos frente a 6 aislamientos de campo del virus

    El alfa-herpesvirus equino 3 (EHV3) es el agente etiológico del exantema coital equino (ECE), enfermedad venérea, altamente contagiosa y caracterizada por la aparición de pápulas, vesículas, pústulas y úlceras en los genitales externos de yeguas y padrillos. Luego de la primo-infección, el EHV3 se mantiene en el animal en un estado de latencia a partir del cual puede reactivar y excretarse, generalmente de manera subclínica. No existen vacunas, por lo que la prevención se basa en la detección de las lesiones clínicas previo al servicio, y la segregación de estos animales. Sin embargo, este abordaje no previene la infección del padrillo por parte de yeguas que excretan el virus de manera subclínica, y por lo tanto existe la necesidad de un tratamiento específico contra el EHV3. En la actualidad, existen varios compuestos antivirales de probada eficacia contra herpesvirus humanos y veterinarios. El objetivo de este trabajo es comparar la eficacia de 3 compuestos antivirales, aciclovir, ganciclovir y cidofovir, contra EHV3 in vitro, y evaluar la eficacia de los mismos contra 6 cepas de campo argentinas de EHV3. Para determinar la eficacia de los compuestos in vitro se evaluaron 3 parámetros: reducción del número de placas de lisis, reducción del tamaño de placas de lisis y reducción de la producción de virus. Adicionalmente, la efectividad de los compuestos en una concentración óptima, previamente determinada en este estudio, fue determinada para 6 cepas de campo argentinas de EHV3. De acuerdo con los resultados obtenidos, ganciclovir fue el compuesto más potente en reducir la replicación del EHV3 in vitro, y por lo tanto podría considerarse un potencial candidato para el tratamiento y la prevención del ECE en yeguas y padrillos.Equid alphaherpesvirus 3 (EHV3) is the etiological agent of equine coital exanthema (ECE), which is a venereal, highly contagious disease, characterized by the formation of papules, vesicles, pustules and ulcers on the external genitalia of mares and stallions. EHV3 remains in a latent state after a successful infection and there are latently infected animals in which the virus is reactivated and generally re-excreted subclinically. There are no available vaccines for this condition and prevention is based on the clinical examination of mares prior to mating, which allows to segregate those showing clinical signs. As this approach does not eliminate the risk of contagion in stallions from subclinically infected mares, there is a need for a specific EHV3 treatment. Nowadays, there exist various antiviral compounds of proven effectiveness for other alphaherpesviruses affecting humans and animals. The aim of the present study was to compare the efficacy of three antiviral compounds, acyclovir, ganciclovir and cidofovir against EHV3 in vitro, and to assess their efficacy against six EHV3 Argentinian field isolates. To determine the efficacy of these compounds in vitro, three parameters were analyzed: reduction of plaque number, reduction of plaque size and reduction of viral production. Additionally, the effectiveness of the three compounds at an optimum concentration previously determined in this study was investigated for the EHV3 field isolates. Based on our results, ganciclovir was the most potent antiviral compound to reduce EHV3 replication in vitro and may thus be a valuable candidate for treatment and prevention of ECE in mares and stallions.Fil: Vissani, María Aldana.     Radio Emission from 3D Relativistic Hydrodynamic Jets: Observational Evidence of Jet Stratification

    We present the first radio emission simulations from high resolution three dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic jets, which allow for a study of the observational implications of the interaction between the jet and external medium. This interaction gives rise to a stratification of the jet where a fast spine is surrounded by a slow high energy shear layer. The stratification, and in particular the large specific internal energy and slow flow in the shear layer largely determines the emission from the jet. If the magnetic field in the shear layer becomes helical (e.g., resulting from an initial toroidal field and an aligned field component generated by shear) the emission shows a cross section asymmetry, in which either the top or the bottom of the jet dominates the emission. This, as well as limb or spine brightening, is a function of the viewing angle and flow velocity, and the top/bottom jet emission predominance can be reversed if the jet changes direction with respect to the observer, or presents a change in velocity. The asymmetry is more prominent in the polarized flux, because of field cancellation (or amplification) along the line of sight. Recent observations of jet cross section emission asymmetries in the blazar 1055+018 can be explained assuming the existence of a shear layer with a helical magnetic field.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 1 latex style file, ApJL accepte

    Small and large intestine express a truncated Dab1 isoform that assembles in cell-cell junctions and co-localizes with proteins involved in endocytosis

    Disabled-1 (Dab1) is an essential intracellular adaptor protein in the reelin pathway. Our previous studies in mice intestine showed that Dab1 transmits the reelin signal to cytosolic signalling pathways. Here, we determine the Dab1 isoform expressed in rodent small and large intestine, its subcellular location and co-localization with clathrin, caveolin-1 and N-Wasp. PCR and sequencing analysis reveal that rodent small and large intestine express a Dab1 isoform that misses three (Y198, Y200 and Y220) of the five tyrosine phosphorylation sites present in brain Dab1 isoform (canonical) and contains nuclear localization and export signals. Western blot assays show that both, crypts, which shelter progenitor cells, and enterocytes express the same Dab1 isoform, suggesting that epithelial cell differentiation does not regulate intestinal generation of alternatively spliced Dab1 variants. They also reveal that the canonical and the intestinal Dab1 isoforms differ in their total degree of phosphorylation. Immunostaining assays show that in enterocytes Dab1 localizes at the apical and lateral membranes, apical vesicles, close to adherens junctions and desmosomes, as well as in the nucleus; co-localizes with clathrin and with N-Wasp but not with caveolin-1, and in Caco-2 cells Dab1 localizes at cell-to-cell junctions by a Ca2+-dependent process. In conclusion, the results indicate that in rodent intestine a truncated Dab1 variant transmits the reelin signal and may play a role in clathrin-mediated apical endocytosis and in the control of cell-to-cell junction assembly.     Analysis of motion of solid hydrogen tracer particles in oscillating superfluid flows

    We have developed a relatively simple cryostat which allows us to image turbulent flows in superfluid helium at temperatures below 2 K, using frozen H2 particles. We analyze the statistics of the velocities of these solid tracers, which follow the turbulent flow generated by oscillating bodies. We have also studied one of the oscillators working in air at room temperature, and traced the flow with solid talcum particles for comparison. Images were recorded by a digital camera at 240 frames per second, while frequencies of the oscillators are between 20 to 45 Hz. The flow is characterized by a modified Reynolds number Reδ based on the viscous penetration depth δ. Software in a dedicated particle tracking velocimetry code allows us to compute the trajectories and velocities of tens of thousands of particles. We have obtained the number of particles for equally spaced intervals of the velocity modulus. For the oscillators in the superfluid, the probability of finding particles at higher velocities has an exponential decay. Within our resolution the statistics in the superfluid for oscillating objects with sharp borders is largely independent of Reδ, while the logarithmic decay at low velocities seems faster than for high velocities for rounded objects.     Earnings Mobility in Times of Growth and Decline: Argentina from 1996 to 2003

    In recent years, the economy of Argentina has experienced both rapid economic growth and severe economic decline. In this paper, we use a series of one-year long panels to study who gained the most in pesos when the economy grew and who lost the most in pesos when the economy contracted. Various considerations led us to expect that mobility would be divergent—that is, that the individuals who started with the highest initial earnings would enjoy the largest earnings gains in pesos. Contrary to expectations and for a wide range of specifications, mobility is found to be mostly convergent, sometimes neutral, and never divergent. We then demonstrate how generally rising inequality and convergent mobility can be reconciled. Thus, the panel data analysis performed in this paper presents a picture of economic growth that is much more pro-poor than what one gets from cross-sectional inequality comparisons

The transient dynamics and stability of a population are determined by the interplay between species density, its spatial distribution and the positive and negative density-dependent processes regulating population growth. 2. Using the human-helminth parasite system as an example, we propose that the life-stage upon which negative density dependence operates will influence the rate of host reinfection following anthelmintic chemotherapy, and the likely success of control programmes. 3. Simple deterministic models are developed which highlight how a parasite species whose population size is down-regulated by density-dependent establishment will reinfect a host population at a faster rate than a species with density-dependent parasite fecundity. 4. Different forms of density dependence can produce the same equilibrium behaviour but different transient dynamics. Under-representing the nature and magnitude of density-dependent mechanisms, and in particular those operating upon establishing life-stages, may cause the resilience of the parasite population to a control perturbation to be underestimated
