    Mapping the interstellar medium in galaxies with Herschel/SPIRE

    The standard method of mapping the interstellar medium in a galaxy, by observing the molecular gas in the CO 1-0 line and the atomic gas in the 21-cm line, is largely limited with current telescopes to galaxies in the nearby universe. In this letter, we use SPIRE observations of the galaxies M99 and M100 to explore the alternative approach of mapping the interstellar medium using the continuum emission from the dust. We have compared the methods by measuring the relationship between the star-formation rate and the surface density of gas in the galaxies using both methods. We find the two methods give relationships with a similar dispersion, confirming that observing the continuum emission from the dust is a promising method of mapping the interstellar medium in galaxies

    The Formation And Decomposition Of Nickel Carbide In Evaporated Nickel Films On Graphite

    Auger electron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to study nickel carbide (Ni3C) formed during the evaporation of nickel onto the surface of single-crystal graphite. It is shown that Ni3C formed in this manner extends from the surface to close to the interface. A model is proposed to explain the mechanism of Ni3C formation. The 1s photoelectron peak from Ni3C is observed to have a binding energy 0.6 eV lower than that of pure graphite. This is attributed to the lack of any significant ionic bonding in Ni3C. © 1978

    1/f noise of Josephson-junction-embedded microwave resonators at single photon energies and millikelvin temperatures

    We present measurements of 1/f frequency noise in both linear and Josephson-junction-embedded superconducting aluminum resonators in the low power, low temperature regime - typical operating conditions for superconducting qubits. The addition of the Josephson junction does not result in additional frequency noise, thereby placing an upper limit for fractional critical current fluctuations of 10−810^{-8} (Hz−1/2^{-1/2}) at 1 Hz for sub-micron, shadow evaporated junctions. These values imply a minimum dephasing time for a superconducting qubit due to critical current noise of 40 -- 1400 μ\mus depending on qubit architecture. Occasionally, at temperatures above 50 mK, we observe the activation of individual fluctuators which increase the level of noise significantly and exhibit Lorentzian spectra

    Dephasing in Quantum Dots: Quadratic Coupling to Acoustic Phonons

    A microscopic theory of optical transitions in quantum dots with carrier-phonon interaction is developed. Virtual transitions into higher confined states with acoustic phonon assistance add a quadratic phonon coupling to the standard linear one, thus extending the independent Boson model. Summing infinitely many diagrams in the cumulant, a numerically exact solution for the interband polarization is found. Its full time dependence and the absorption lineshape of the quantum dot are calculated. It is the quadratic interaction which gives rise to a temperature-dependent broadening of the zero-phonon line, being here calculated for the first time in a consistent scheme.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Ultraslow light propagation in an inhomogeneously broadened rare-earth ion-doped crystal

    We show that Coherent Population Oscillations effect allows to burn a narrow spectral hole (26Hz) within the homogeneous absorption line of the optical transition of an Erbium ion-doped crystal. The large dispersion of the index of refraction associated with this hole permits to achieve a group velocity as low as 2.7m/s with a ransmission of 40%. We especially benefit from the inhomogeneous absorption broadening of the ions to tune both the transmission coefficient, from 40% to 90%, and the light group velocity from 2.7m/s to 100m/s

    Grand Challenges: Social Justice and the Need for Evidence-Based Sex Offender Registry Reform

    Sex offender registries, though popular, bring with them enormous fiscal costs and unintended consequences for offenders and communities. Consistent with the Grand Challenges, social workers can play a role in advocating for sex offender management policies that are better informed by evidence and thus a better use of resources. Registry reform would also moderate the stigma resulting from the sex offender label, and reduce barriers to offender reintegration. First, a brief history of registration laws and the research around their effectiveness will be provided, followed by a rationale for needed improvements in sex offender management policy. Finally, evidence-based recommendations for reform will be offered. Such changes can result in improved public safety outcomes and social justice in our communities

    MSRE-PCR for analysis of gene-specific DNA methylation

    Abnormal DNA methylation is observed in certain promoters of neoplastic cells, although the likelihood of methylation for each individual promoter varies. Simultaneous analysis of many promoters in the same sample can allow use of statistical methods for identification of neoplasia. Here we describe an assay for such analysis, based on digestion of genomic DNA with methylation-sensitive restriction enzyme and multiplexed PCR with gene-specific primers (MSRE-PCR). MSRE-PCR includes extensive digestion of genomic DNA (uncut fragments cannot be identified by PCR), can be applied to dilute samples (<1 pg/μl), requires limited amount of starting material (42 pg or genomic equivalent of seven cells) and can identify methylation in a heterogeneous mix containing <2% of cells with methylated fragments. When applied to 53 promoters of breast cancer cell lines MCF-7, MDA-MB-231 and T47D, MSRE-PCR correctly identified the methylation status of genes analyzed by other techniques. For selected genes results of MSRE-PCR were confirmed by methylation-specific PCR and bisulfite sequencing. The assay can be configured for any number of desired targets in any user-defined set of genes
