    Higher water temperature leads to precocious maturation of western rock lobsters (Panulirus cygnus), but are things that simple?

    During a rock lobster post-puerulus grow out project, western rock lobsters from three different cohorts (post-puerulus, year-1 and year-2) were held for 12 months under two temperature regimes (ambient and 23oC) and two feed delivery treatments (the same ration of pelleted diet fed once nightly and in the alternate treatment, thrice nightly). At the end of the trial, 43% of females from the largest cohort (2-year post settlement) in the 23oC treatment, had ovigerous setae. However, none of the animals held at ambient temperatures showed signs of maturity. Feed delivery did not influence the presence or absence of ovigerous setae. Male maturity responded to elevated temperature in the same way as for females, as indicated by merus/carapace length ratios. The response of female size at maturity to 23oC was compared to a similar trial in the 1970s in which 2-year post settlement animals wereheld at 25oC. Maturity of females in that study was one year later than in the trial reported here, indicating that there may have been a decrease in age at maturity since the 1970s. The conclusion from this and research on other rock lobster species, is that size/age at maturity is likely to be a complex response to a range of contributing factors of which temperature is an important one

    Pilot phase trial to quantify the extent and relevance of any deepwater puerulus settlement that may have taken place in the Western Rocklobster Fishery

    This study had two objectives. Firstly to trial modifications to commercial western rock lobster pots, so as to sample as wide a size range of lobsters on the grounds as possible. Sampling took place over a 10 day period between 13-24 September 2009, with seven commercial fishermen being responsible for collection of the data at different sampling locations (Mandurah, Fremantle, Lancelin, Dongara, Geraldton, Abrolhos and Kalbarri). This arrangement proved to be successful in that a wide area of the coast was covered by the sampling regime and good quality catch composition data was achieved across the four depth zones (0-10 fm, 10-20 fm, 20-30 fm and >30 fm) that were sampled. The different pot modifications that were trialled sampled a wide size range (25-144 mm CL), but mostly caught lobsters around the legal size limit (modal size, 80 mm CL). In three of the four areas where more than one pot type was used, there were significant differences (p<0.01) in the catch rates of one or more size classes between the various pot types.The second objective was to establish whether there has been a shift in post-puerulus settlement from shallow to deeper waters. Analysis showed that depth was highly significant (p<0.05) in determining the catch rates of most size classes (≤50 mm CL; 51-65 mm CL; 66-76 mm CL; 77-105 mm CL and ≥105 mm CL). Generally, small size classes were sampled in the shallow depth categories and larger lobsters were sampled in the deeper depth categories, which would suggest that as in the past, recent puerulus settlement has been in shallow depths. Accordingly, it would seem reasonable to conclude that it is unlikely that there has been a major shift in the depths at which pueruli are settling. However, small lobsters were sampled in low numbers in the deep water categories in this survey and this therefore does not exclude the possibility that deep water settlement may be becoming more common than in past.In terms of recommendations, more monitoring of post-puerulus/juvenile lobsters using modified commercial pots similar to those used in this study has the potential to provide inter-annual comparisons of the numbers of small size classes settling at different depths on the grounds. It is only with more data of this type over a longer time period, that it will be possible to show whether there is any indirect evidence of a shift in settlement to deeper water. Should this work continue into the future, it would be beneficial to standardize on a consistent type of modification to the commercial pots so that more reliable comparisons of the relative numbers of juvenile animals can be made between areas

    Didemnid species are assessed as species with a high invasive potential for Australia and as such are listed as target species for both state and national monitoring programs. The presence of the sea squirt Didemnum perlucidum (Monniot, 1983) was first documented in Australia in 2010 and has since then been detected extensively throughout the state of Western Australia and in the Northern Territory. These detections have raised important questions as to the origin and potential impact of this species in Australia. The current study was initiated to review the current known global geographic range of D. perlucidum and to obtain specimens that could support molecular studies aimed at evaluating the potential origin of this species in Australia. Characterization of 5’ COI mitochondrial sequences from 286 specimens revealed a remarkably low level of genetic diversity across the current known range of D. perlucidum and the existence of one main widespread genetic haplotype. Such findings suggest that all locations sampled in this study may in fact represent introductions of D. perlucidum and that the natural native range of the species remains unknown. Our demonstration that specimens (n=187) originating from across a broad expanse of the Australian West Coast were comprised of a single haplotype also lends support to the hypothesis that D. perlucidum is a species that has been introduced recently into Australia. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that D. perlucium distribution in Australia is mostly confined to artificial structures, it has displayed invasive characteristics, and its presence is now being detected across an increasingly wide geographical area. Given the demonstrated low level of genetic COI variation across its known global distribution, lack of clarity around its native range, and limited availability of data on this species globally, we recognize the requirement for further work to more fully elucidate the exact origins and patterns of distribution of D. perlucidum in Australia. This study represents the most comprehensive mapping of the current global distribution of D. perlucidum conducted to date and will hopefully motivate further studies aimed at elucidating this species biology, origin, high-risk routes and impacts

    Characterisation of polymorphic microsatellite loci in the western rock lobster

    Nine microsatellite loci were identified in the western rock lobster (Panulirus cygnus) using two different methods. The first method involved the screening of a small, fragment, partial genomic library with a radioactive (CA) 6 probe. The second method, was based upon an enrichment method and used biotinylated, tetranucleotide microsatellite oligonucleotide capture probes. The nine loci described are all very polymorphic, with 11 to 34 alleles observed for each locus and heterozygosities ranging from 0.58 to 0.86. These microsatellite loci will be useful in analysing both the population structure and the mating systems used by this species and will add important information for the management of the wild stocks of this economically important species. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2009

    Fussy Feeders: Phyllosoma Larvae of the Western Rocklobster (Panulirus cygnus) Demonstrate Prey Preference

    The Western Rocklobster (Panulirus cygnus) is the most valuable single species fishery in Australia and the largest single country spiny lobster fishery in the world. In recent years a well-known relationship between oceanographic conditions and lobster recruitment has become uncoupled, with significantly lower recruitment than expected, generating interest in the factors influencing survival and development of the planktonic larval stages. The nutritional requirements and wild prey of the planktotrophic larval stage (phyllosoma) of P. cygnus were previously unknown, hampering both management and aquaculture efforts for this species. Ship-board feeding trials of wild-caught mid-late stage P. cygnus phyllosoma in the eastern Indian Ocean, off the coast of Western Australia, were conducted in July 2010 and August-September 2011. In a series of experiments, phyllosoma were fed single and mixed species diets of relatively abundant potential prey items (chaetognaths, salps, and krill). Chaetognaths were consumed in 2–8 times higher numbers than the other prey, and the rate of consumption of chaetognaths increased with increasing concentration of prey. The highly variable lipid content of the phyllosoma, and the fatty acid profiles of the phyllosoma and chaetognaths, indicated they were from an oligotrophic oceanic food chain where food resources for macrozooplankton were likely to be constrained. Phyllosoma fed chaetognaths over 6 days showed significant changes in some fatty acids and tended to accumulate lipid, indicating an improvement in overall nutritional condition. The discovery of a preferred prey for P. cygnus will provide a basis for future oceanographic, management and aquaculture research for this economically and ecologically valuable species

    Changes in density, age composition, and growth rate of portunus pelagicus in a large embayment in which fishing pressures and environmental conditions have been altered

    Commercial and recreational catches of the blue swimmer crab Portunus pelagicus in Cockburn Sound, a large marine embayment on the west coast of Australia, have risen markedly over the last 20–30 years. However, because commercial fishers changed from using tangle nets to traps to catch crabs during this period, the annual catch per unit effort data for the commercial fishery throughout this period are not directly comparable and cannot thus be used to elucidate whether the increased catches reflected an increase in crab density. Trawling was thus undertaken to estimate the densities of P. pelagicus in Cockburn Sound in the late 1990s to facilitate comparisons with those we estimated from trawl catch rates for this species in that embayment during the early 1970s. The comparisons demonstrate that, despite increases in commercial and recreational crab catches, the densities of P. pelagicus in Cockburn Sound have risen markedly between the above two periods. This change is probably related to a decline in the abundance of the large piscivorous predators of P. pelagicus as a result of heavy fishing pressure and possibly also to an increase in the abundance of the prey of this portunid. Size composition data demonstrate that appreciable numbers of crabs survived in Cockburn Sound until the end of their second year of life and even beyond during the early 1970s, whereas the vast majority of 1+ crabs were removed by heavy fishing pressure by the month (June) that they had reached 18 months in age in the late 1990s. The fact that, in the late 1990s, few legal-sized crabs still remained for fishing between July and December and the 0+ age class increased in number and size throughout the year accounts for the broad estimates of biomass becoming far greater in these months in the 1990s than in the corresponding months in the early 1970s. Growth during the first eleven months of life, i.e., in the period leading up to the age at which crabs reach the minimum legal size for retention, was significantly faster in the early 1970s than in the late 1990s when crab densities were much greater. The slower growth rate and the reduced longevity through heavy fishing pressure in the latter period would help account for females becoming mature at a smaller size and for ovigerous females being represented by one rather than two substantial size cohorts, respectively. The essentially single size cohort in the late 1990s and first cohort in the early 1970s correspond mainly to crabs in their first maturity instar, whereas the second cohort in the early 1970s predominantly represented crabs in their second maturity instar
