An investigation of the behavior of outgassed molecules in thermal vacuums

    Get PDF
The objective is to understand how surfaces outgas and how outgassed substances subsequently condense on other surfaces. Preliminary tests produced calculated mass losses that were found to be in reasonable agreement with mass losses determined by weighing the sample before and after testing on analytical balances. However, using test materials with various molecular properties showed characteristic variations in the ratios of calculated total mass loss to experimental loss. These variations indicate that for some molecules energetic barriers to absorption and desorption can exist between outgassed molecules and the surfaces on which they condense

Alternative Income Opportunities: Needs of County Agents and Foresters in the Mid-Atlantic Region

    Get PDF
County Extension agents and professional foresters in four Mid-Atlantic States were surveyed to determine the types of requests they receive for specific alternative income opportunities, their clientele demographics, the types of information they need, and how they would like to receive it. A significant percentage of county agents received requests in the areas of forest farming and utilization and recreational access enterprises. They also expressed a greater interest in gaining more knowledge in the area of recreational access compared to foresters. While both audiences preferred printed media to gain this knowledge, county agents had a greater interest in electronic media

Full-coverage film cooling: 3-dimensional measurements of turbulence structure and prediction of recovery region hydrodynamics

    Get PDF
Hydrodynamic measurements were made with a triaxial hot-wire in the full-coverage region and the recovery region following an array of injection holes inclined downstream, at 30 degrees to the surface. The data were taken under isothermal conditions at ambient temperature and pressure for two blowing ratios: M = 0.9 and M = 0.4. Profiles of the three main velocity components and the six Reynolds stresses were obtained at several spanwise positions at each of the five locations down the test plate. A one-equation model of turbulence (using turbulent kinetic energy with an algebraic mixing length) was used in a two-dimensional computer program to predict the mean velocity and turbulent kinetic energy profiles in the recovery region. A new real-time hotwire scheme was developed to make measurements in the three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer over the full-coverage surface

Development of the technology for the fabrication of reliable laminar from control panels

    Get PDF
Materials were assessed and fabrication techniques were developed for use in the manufacture of wing surface materials compatible with the application of both aluminum alloys and nonmetallic composites. The concepts investigated included perforations and slots in the metallic test panels and microporosity and perforations in the composite test panels. Perforations were produced in the metallic test panels by the electron beam process and slots were developed by controlled gaps between the metal sheets. Microporosity was produced in the composite test panels by the resin bleed process, and perforations were produced by the fugitive fiber technique. Each of these concepts was fabricated into test panels, and air flow tests were conducted on the panels

Successful Method for Converting an Existing Woodland Stewardship Program to an Online Program

    Get PDF
In 2016, we debuted an online version of a long-running woodland stewardship Extension program to reach property owners unable to attend traditional workshops. In the first 2 years, 119 participants enrolled. They owned or managed 1,796 ac, and many were in an atypical age demographic. In a follow-up survey of 67 participants, 96% of respondents indicated having undertaken one or more of the targeted land care practices, and two thirds indicated having converted some lawn to natural area. Additionally, participant feedback led to several program improvements. The online course is an effective means for imparting an important stewardship ethic. Our methods and lessons learned may guide other Extension staff wishing to convert existing programming to online offerings

Evaluation of Microglia/Macrophage Cells from Rat Striatum and Prefrontal Cortex Reveals Differential Expression of Inflammatory-Related mRNA after Methamphetamine

    Get PDF
RNA sequencing (RNAseq) can be a powerful tool in the identification of transcriptional changes after drug treatment. RNAseq was utilized to determine expression changes in Fluorescence-activated cell sorted (FACS) CD11b/c+ cells from the striatum (STR) and prefrontal cortex (PFC) of male Sprague-Dawley rats after a methamphetamine (METH) binge dosing regimen. Resident microglia and infiltrating macrophages were collected 2 h or 3 days after drug administration. Gene expression changes indicated there was an increase toward an overall pro-inflammatory state, or M1 polarization, along with what appears to be a subset of cells that differentiated toward the anti-inflammatory M2 polarization. In general, there were significantly more mRNA expression changes in the STR than the PFC and more at 2 h post-binge METH than at 3 days post-binge METH. Additionally, Ingenuity® Pathway Analysis along with details of RNA expression changes revealed cyclo-oxygenase 2 (COX2)-driven prostaglandin (PG) E2 synthesis, glutamine uptake, and the Nuclear factor erythroid2-related factor 2 (NRF2) canonical pathway in microglia were associated with the binge administration regimen of METH

Assimilation and Transformation: Application of Digital Textile Printing

    Get PDF
The goal of this project was to develop textile designs and implementing the design using digital textile printing in order to showcase a textile design collection based on time spent studying abroad in Italy. Designers such as Helmut Lang, Akris, and Dolce and Gabbana have featured the use of digitally printed textiles in their runway collections (Binkley, 2010)
