    Stability of six-dimensional hyperstring braneworlds

We study a six-dimensional braneworld model with infinite warped extra dimensions in the case where the four-dimensional brane is described by a topological vortex of a U(1) symmetry-breaking Abelian Higgs model in presence of a negative cosmological constant. A detailed analysis of the microscopic parameters leading to a finite volume space-time in the extra dimensions is numerically performed. As previously shown, we find that a fine-tuning is required to avoid any kind of singularity on the brane. We then discuss the stability of the vortex by investigating the scalar part of the gauge-invariant perturbations around this fine-tuned configuration. It is found that the hyperstring forming Higgs and gauge fields, as well as the background metric warp factors, cannot be perturbed at all, whereas transverse modes can be considered stable. The warped space-time structure that is imposed around the vortex thus appears severely constrained and cannot generically support nonempty universe models. The genericness of our conclusions is discussed; this will shed some light on the possibility of describing our space-time as a general six-dimensional warped braneworld.Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures, uses RevTex, fine-tuning and stability analysis discussed in greater details. Structure, Organization, and Expression of the lct Gene for Lacticin 481, a Novel Lantibiotic Produced by Lactococcus lactis

    Get PDF
The structural gene for the lactococcal lantibiotic lacticin 481 (lct) has been identified and cloned using a degenerated 20-mer DNA oligonucleotide based on the amino-terminal 7 amino acid residues of the purified protein. The transcription of the lct gene was analyzed, and its promoter was mapped. DNA sequence analysis of the lct gene revealed an open reading frame encoding a peptide of 51 amino acids. Comparison of its deduced amino acid sequence with the amino-terminal sequence and the amino acid composition of lacticin 481 indicates that the 61-residue peptide is prelacticin 481, containing a 27-residue carboxyl-terminal propeptide and a 24-residue amino-terminal leader peptide which lacks the properties of a typical signal sequence and which is significantly different from the leaders of other lantibiotics. The predicted amino acid sequence of prolacticin 481 contains 3 cysteines, 2 serines, and 2 threonines which were not detectable in amino acid analyses of mature lacticin 481. Based on these results and on characterization by two-dimensional NMR techniques, a structural model is proposed in which 2 cysteine residues are involved in lanthionine and one in β-methyllanthionine formation, and a 4th threonine residue is dehydrated. This model predicts a molecular mass for lacticin 481 of 2,901, which is in excellent agreement with that obtained from mass spectrometry.

    Cotton cultivation in Laos

    Get PDF

Investigation of slow collisions for (quasi) symmetric heavy systems: what can be extracted from high resolution X-ray spectra

We present a new experiment on (quasi) symmetric collision systems at low-velocity, namely Ar17+^{17+} ions (v=0.53v=0.53 a.u.) on gaseous Ar and N2_2 targets, using low- and high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy. Thanks to an accurate efficiency calibration of the spectrometers, we extract absolute X-ray emission cross sections combining low-resolution X-ray spectroscopy and a complete determination of the ion beam - gas jet target overlap. Values with improved uncertainty are found in agreement with previous results \cite{Tawara2001}. Resolving the whole He-like Ar16+^{16+} Lyman series from n=2n=2 to 10 with our crystal spectrometer enables to determine precisely the distribution Pn{\mathcal{P}_n} of the electron capture probability and the preferential nprefn_{pref} level of the selective single-electron capture. Evaluation of cross sections for this process as well as for the contribution of multiple-capture is carried out. Their sensitivity to the \ell-distribution of nn levels populated by single-electron capture is clearly demonstrated, providing a stringent benchmark for theories. In addition, the hardness ratio is extracted and the influence of the decay of the metastable 1s2s 3S11s2s\ ^3 S_1 state on this ratio is discussed

    Conservative Integrators for Many-body Problems

Conservative symmetric second-order one-step schemes are derived for dynamical systems describing various many-body systems using the Discrete Multiplier Method. This includes conservative schemes for the nn-species Lotka-Volterra system, the nn-body problem with radially symmetric potential and the nn-point vortex models in the plane and on the sphere. In particular, we recover Greenspan-Labudde's conservative schemes for the nn-body problem. Numerical experiments are shown verifying the conservative property of the schemes and second-order accuracy.Comment: 35 page
