The Densities of Planets in Multiple Stellar Systems
We analyze the effect of companion stars on the bulk density of 29 planets
orbiting 15 stars in the Kepler field. These stars have at least one stellar
companion within 2", and the planets have measured masses and radii, allowing
an estimate of their bulk density. The transit dilution by the companion star
requires the planet radii to be revised upward, even if the planet orbits the
primary star; as a consequence, the planetary bulk density decreases. We find
that, if planets orbited a faint companion star, they would be more
volatile-rich, and in several cases their densities would become
unrealistically low, requiring large, inflated atmospheres or unusually large
mass fractions in a H/He envelope. In addition, for planets detected in radial
velocity data, the primary star has to be the host. We can exclude 14 planets
from orbiting the companion star; the remaining 15 planets in seven planetary
systems could orbit either the primary or the secondary star, and for five of
these planets the decrease in density would be substantial even if they orbited
the primary, since the companion is of almost equal brightness as the primary.
Substantial follow-up work is required in order to accurately determine the
radii of transiting planets. Of particular interest are small, rocky planets
that may be habitable; a lower mean density might imply a more volatile-rich
composition. Reliable radii, masses, and thus bulk densities will allow us to

ST/STIS Spectroscopy of the White Dwarfs in the Short-Period Dwarf Novae LL And and EF Peg
We present new HST/STIS observations of the short-period dwarf novae LL And
and EF Peg during deep quiescence. We fit stellar models to the UV spectra and
use optical and IR observations to determine the physical parameters of the
whitedwarfs in the systems, the distances to the binaries, and the properties
of thesecondary stars. Both white dwarfs are relatively cool, having T_{eff}
near 15000K, and consistent with a mass of 0.6 M-sun. The white dwarf in LL And
appears to be of solar abundance or slightly lower while that in EF Peg is near
0.1-0.3 solar. LL And is found to be 760 pc away while EF Peg is closer at 380
pc. EF Peg appears to have an ~M5V secondary star, consistent with that
expected for its orbital period, while the secondary object in LL And remains a

Paraxial ray optics cloaking
Despite much interest and progress in optical spatial cloaking, a
three-dimensional (3D), transmitting, continuously multidirectional cloak in
the visible regime has not yet been demonstrated. Here we experimentally
demonstrate such a cloak using ray optics, albeit with some edge effects. Our
device requires no new materials, uses isotropic off-the-shelf optics, scales
easily to cloak arbitrarily large objects, and is as broadband as the choice of
optical material, all of which have been challenges for current cloaking
schemes. In addition, we provide a concise formalism that quantifies and
produces perfect optical cloaks in the small-angle (`paraxial') limit

The (Mis)appropriation of HIV/AIDS advocacy strategies in Global Mental Health: towards a more nuanced approach
Background: Mental health is increasingly finding a place on global health and international development agendas. Advocates for Global Mental Health (GMH), and international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank, argue that treatments available in high-income countries should also be made available in low- and middle-income countries. Such arguments are often made by comparing mental health to infectious diseases, including the relative disease and economic burdens they impose, and pointing to the applicability of the right to access treatment for mental health, not only infectious diseases. HIV/AIDS advocacy in particular has been held up by GMH advocates as offering an appropriate strategy for generating global commitment.
Discussion: There is a need to assess how health issues are framed not only in relation to social goods outside of health (such as human rights, security or development), but also in relation to other health or disease models, and how health policy and practice is shaped as a result. The article debates the merits and consequences of likening mental health to HIV/AIDS, and identifies four major problems with the model for GMH advocacy being developed through these analogies: 1. An inappropriately universalizing global approach to context-specific problems; 2. A conception of human rights that focuses on the right to access treatment at the expense of the right to refuse it; 3. A tendency to treat poverty as a psychiatric issue, rather than recognizing that mental distress can be the result of poverty and other forms of inequality; 4. The prioritization of destigmatization of disease over social justice models.
Conclusion: There are significant problems with the wholesale adoption of an (often simplified) version of HIV/AIDS advocacy as a model for GMH. Yet critical engagement with the important and nuanced differences between HIV/AIDS and mental health may nevertheless point to some possibilities for productive engagement and cross-fertilisation between advocates, activists and scholars in both fields
Paraxial full-field cloaking
We complete the `paraxial' (small-angle) ray optics cloaking formalism
presented previously [Choi and Howell, Opt. Express 22, 29465 (2014)], by
extending it to the full-field of light. Omnidirectionality is then the only
relaxed parameter of what may be considered an ideal, broadband, field cloak.
We show that an isotropic plate of uniform thickness, with appropriately
designed refractive index and dispersion, can match the phase over the whole
visible spectrum. Our results support the fundamental limits on cloaking for
broadband vs. omnidirectionality, and provide insights into when anisotropy may
be required

The effects of bilingualism on speakers who stutter during late childhood
Objectives: To examine stuttering by children speaking an alternative language exclusively (LE) or with English (BIL) and to study onset of stuttering, school performance and recovery rate relative to monolingual speakers who stutter (MONO).
Design: Clinical referral sample with supplementary data obtained from speech recordings and interviews.
Setting: South-East England, 1999–2007.
Participants: Children aged 8–12 plus who stuttered (monolingual and bilingual) and fluent bilingual controls
(FB).
Main outcome measures: Participants’ stuttering history, SATS scores, measures of recovery or persistence of stuttering.
Results: 69 (21.8%) of 317 children were bilingual. Of 38 children who used a language other than English at home, 36 (94.7%) stuttered in both languages. Fewer LE (15/38, 39.5%) than BIL (23/38, 60.5%) children stuttered at first referral to clinic, but more children in the fluent control sample were LE (28/38, 73.7%) than BIL (10/38, 26.3%). The association between stuttering and bilingual group (LE/BIL) was significant by x2 test; BIL speakers have more chance of stuttering than LE speakers. Age at stuttering onset and male/female ratio for LE, BIL and MONO speakers were similar (4 years 9 months, 4 years 10 months and 4 years 3 months, and 4.1:1, 4.75:1 and 4.43:1, respectively). Educational achievement was not affected by bilingualism relative to the MONO and FB groups. The recovery rate for the LE and MONO controls together (55%) was significantly higher by x2 test than for the BIL group (25%).
Conclusions: BIL children had an increased risk of stuttering and a lower chance of recovery from stuttering than LE and MONO speakers
Dynamic programming and direct interaction for the optimum design of skeletal towers
A computer technique is proposed for automatically designing tower structures. Dynamic programming was used to find the optimum geometric configuration of the structural members, while the member sizes were proportioned by direct iteration. Tower structures are particularly suited to this method of automatic design since the rapidity of the analysis and design depends primarily upon substructuring. Substructuring of towers was comparatively simple because interaction between adjacent substructures is simulated with reasonable accuracy. Typical examples are presented to illustrate the method
