    Measurement of the Permanent Electric Dipole Moment of the 129^{129}Xe Atom

    We report on a new measurement of the CP-violating permanent Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) of the neutral 129^{129}Xe atom. Our experimental approach is based on the detection of the free precession of co-located nuclear spin-polarized 3^3He and 129^{129}Xe samples. The EDM measurement sensitivity benefits strongly from long spin coherence times of several hours achieved in diluted gases and homogeneous weak magnetic fields of about 400~nT. A finite EDM is indicated by a change in the precession frequency, as an electric field is periodically reversed with respect to the magnetic guiding field. Our result, (−4.7±6.4)⋅10−28\left(-4.7\pm6.4\right)\cdot 10^{-28} ecm, is consistent with zero and is used to place a new upper limit on the 129^{129}Xe EDM: ∣dXe∣<1.5⋅10−27|d_\text{Xe}|<1.5 \cdot 10^{-27} ecm (95% C.L.). We also discuss the implications of this result for various CP-violating observables as they relate to theories of physics beyond the standard model

    Using unstructured profile information for gender classification of Portuguese and English

    This paper reports experiments on automatically detecting the gender of Twitter users, based on unstructured information found on their Twitter profile. A set of features previously proposed is evaluated on two datasets of English and Portuguese users, and their performance is assessed using several supervised and unsupervised approaches, including Naive Bayes variants, Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machines, Fuzzy c-Means clustering, and k-means. Results show that features perform well in both languages separately, but even best results were achieved when combining both languages. Supervised approaches reached 97.9 % accuracy, but Fuzzy c-Means also proved suitable for this task achieving 96.4 % accuracy.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Strong coupling expansion for the Bose-Hubbard and the Jaynes-Cummings lattice model

    A strong coupling expansion, based on the Kato-Bloch perturbation theory, which has recently been proposed by Eckardt et al. [Phys. Rev. B 79, 195131] and Teichmann et al. [Phys. Rev. B 79, 224515] is implemented in order to study various aspects of the Bose-Hubbard and the Jaynes-Cummings lattice model. The approach, which allows to generate numerically all diagrams up to a desired order in the interaction strength is generalized for disordered systems and for the Jaynes-Cummings lattice model. Results for the Bose-Hubbard and the Jaynes-Cummings lattice model will be presented and compared with results from VCA and DMRG.     Experimental study of fragmentation products in the reactions 112Sn + 112Sn and 124Sn + 124Sn at 1 AGeV

    Production cross-sections and longitudinal velocity distributions of the projectile-like residues produced in the reactions 112Sn + 112Sn and 124Sn + 124Sn both at an incident beam energy of 1 AGeV were measured with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer, the Fragment Separator (FRS) of GSI. For both reactions the characteristics of the velocity distributions and nuclide production cross sections were determined for residues with atomic number Z ≄\geq 10.     Precise Measurement of Magnetic Field Gradients from Free Spin Precession Signals of 3^{3}He and 129^{129}Xe Magnetometers

    We report on precise measurements of magnetic field gradients extracted from transverse relaxation rates of precessing spin samples. The experimental approach is based on the free precession of gaseous, nuclear spin polarized 3^3He and 129^{129}Xe atoms in a spherical cell inside a magnetic guiding field of about 400 nT using LTC_C SQUIDs as low-noise magnetic flux detectors. The transverse relaxation rates of both spin species are simultaneously monitored as magnetic field gradients are varied. For transverse relaxation times reaching 100 h, the residual longitudinal field gradient across the spin sample could be deduced to be∣∇⃗Bz∣=(5.6±0.4)|\vec{\nabla}B_z|=(5.6 \pm 0.4) pT/cm. The method takes advantage of the high signal-to-noise ratio with which the decaying spin precession signal can be monitored that finally leads to the exceptional accuracy to determine magnetic field gradients at the sub pT/cm scale

    Nucleosynthesis in the Early Galaxy

    Recent observations of r-process-enriched metal-poor star abundances reveal a non-uniform abundance pattern for elements Z≀47Z\leq47. Based on non-correlation trends between elemental abundances as a function of Eu-richness in a large sample of metal-poor stars, it is shown that the mixing of a consistent and robust light element primary process (LEPP) and the r-process pattern found in r-II metal-poor stars explains such apparent non-uniformity. Furthermore, we derive the abundance pattern of the LEPP from observation and show that it is consistent with a missing component in the solar abundances when using a recent s-process model. As the astrophysical site of the LEPP is not known, we explore the possibility of a neutron capture process within a site-independent approach. It is suggested that scenarios with neutron densities nn≀1013n_{n}\leq10^{13} cm−3cm^{-3} or in the range nn≄1024n_{n}\geq10^{24} cm−3cm^{-3} best explain the observations.Comment: 28 pages, 7 Postscript figures.     Limit on Lorentz and CPT violation of the bound Neutron Using a Free Precession 3He/129Xe co-magnetometer

    We report on the search for Lorentz violating sidereal variations of the frequency difference of co-located spin-species while the Earth and hence the laboratory reference frame rotates with respect to a relic background field. The co-magnetometer used is based on the detection of freely precessing nuclear spins from polarized 3He and 129Xe gas samples using SQUIDs as low-noise magnetic flux detectors. As result we can determine the limit for the equatorial component of the background field interacting with the spin of the bound neutron to be bn < 3.7 x 10^{-32} GeV (95 C.L.).Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    In the last two decades a number of nuclear structure and astrophysics experiments were performed at heavy-ion storage rings employing unique experimental conditions offered by such machines. Furthermore, building on the experience gained at the two facilities presently in operation, several new storage ring projects were launched worldwide.
