Open tube guideway for high speed air cushioned vehicles
This invention is a tubular shaped guideway for high-speed air-cushioned supported vehicles. The tubular guideway is split and separated such that the sides of the guideway are open. The upper portion of the tubular guideway is supported above the lower portion by truss-like structural members. The lower portion of the tubular guideway may be supported by the terrain over which the vehicle travels, on pedestals or some similar structure
Vanishing Fe 3d orbital moments in single-crystalline magnetite
We show detailed magnetic absorption spectroscopy results of an in situ
cleaved high quality single crystal of magnetite. In addition the experimental
setup was carefully optimized to reduce drift, self absorption, and offset
phenomena as far as possible. In strong contradiction to recently published
data, our observed orbital moments are nearly vanishing and the spin moments
are quite close to the integer values proposed by theory. This very important
issue supports the half metallic full spin polarized picture of magnetite.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Induced magnetism of carbon atoms at the graphene/Ni(111) interface
We report an element-specific investigation of electronic and magnetic
properties of the graphene/Ni(111) system. Using magnetic circular dichroism,
the occurrence of an induced magnetic moment of the carbon atoms in the
graphene layer aligned parallel to the Ni 3d magnetization is observed. We
attribute this magnetic moment to the strong hybridization between C and
Ni 3d valence band states. The net magnetic moment of carbon in the graphene
layer is estimated to be in the range of per atom.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Spin moment over 10-300 K and delocalization of magnetic electrons above the Verwey transition in magnetite
In order to probe the magnetic ground state, we have carried out temperature
dependent magnetic Compton scattering experiments on an oriented single crystal
of magnetite (FeO), together with the corresponding first-principles
band theory computations to gain insight into the measurements. An accurate
value of the magnetic moment associated with unpaired spins is obtained
directly over the temperature range of 10-300K. is found to be
non-integral and to display an anomalous behavior with the direction of the
external magnetic field near the Verwey transition. These results reveal how
the magnetic properties enter the Verwey energy scale via spin-orbit coupling
and the geometrical frustration of the spinel structure, even though the Curie
temperature of magnetite is in excess of 800 K. The anisotropy of the magnetic
Compton profiles increases through the Verwey temperature and indicates
that magnetic electrons in the ground state of magnetite become delocalized on
Fe B-sites above .Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Journal of Physics and Chemistry of

The role of family members in psychiatric deep brain stimulation trials:More than psychosocial support
Family members can provide crucial support to individuals participating in clinical trials. In research on the “newest frontier” of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)—the use of DBS for psychiatric conditions—family member support is frequently listed as a criterion for trial enrollment. Despite the significance of family members, qualitative ethics research on DBS for psychiatric conditions has focused almost exclusively on the perspectives and experiences of DBS recipients. This qualitative study is one of the first to include both DBS recipients and their family members as interview participants. Using dyadic thematic analysis—an approach that takes both the individuals and the relationship as units of analyses—this study analyzes the complex ways in which family relationships can affect DBS trial participation, and how DBS trial participation in turn influences family relationships. Based on these findings, we propose ways to improve study designs to better take family relationships into account, and better support family members in taking on the complex, essential roles that they play in DBS trials for psychiatric conditions
Influence of theplot label complexity on the UV-flexo printing process
The process of narrow web flexo UV-printing labels is analyzed in the article. Proposed distribution of labels into three groups according to the complexity of the plot. The influence of the plot labels complexity on the printing speed and the choice of anilox rollers was detected. It is suggested the use of such factors as speed, type of anilox, printing material properties as the linguistic variables for calculating and predicting the quality of products of varying complexity by means of fuzzy logic
Strain and composition dependence of the orbital polarization in nickelate superlattices
A combined analysis of x-ray absorption and resonant reflectivity data was
used to obtain the orbital polarization profiles of superlattices composed of
four-unit-cell-thick layers of metallic LaNiO3 and layers of insulating RXO3
(R=La, Gd, Dy and X=Al, Ga, Sc), grown on substrates that impose either
compressive or tensile strain. This superlattice geometry allowed us to partly
separate the influence of epitaxial strain from interfacial effects controlled
by the chemical composition of the insulating blocking layers. Our quantitative
analysis reveal orbital polarizations up to 25%. We further show that strain is
the most effective control parameter, whereas the influence of the chemical
composition of the blocking layers is comparatively small.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
Assembly induced delaminations in composite structures
Experimental and analytical studies of the development of delaminations around fastener holes in composite structures are presented. This type of delamination is known to occur in composite skins that are mechanically fastened to a poorly mating substructure. Results of an experimental study to determine the resistance of laminates to the initiation of assembly induced delaminations and the residual strength of assembly damaged coupons are presented for AS4/3501-6, IM7/8551-7A, and AS4/PEEK material systems. A survey of existing analytical models for predicting the residual strength and stability of delaminations is presented, and the development of a new model for predicting the initiation of delaminations around a fastener hole is outlined. The fastener hole damage initiation model utilizes a finite element based Fourier series solution, and is validated through comparisons of analytical and experimental results
