Socio-economic Impact Assessment of Livelihood Security in Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Aquaculture on the Tsunami-hit Lands of Andaman
Indian subcontinent is highly vulnerable to major natural disasters such as earthquakes, cyclones, floods, droughts, landslides and bushfires. Tsunami, which is a recent addition to this list, had occurred in the early morning of 26th December 2004, after a massive earthquake of 9.2 magnitude on the Richter scale in Andaman & Nicobar islands, resulting in the submergence of large area of farmland, and subsequent drying up of water bodies. It caused moisture stress for the standing crops, livestock and fisheries and affected the livelihood of the people to a large extent. In this context, the present study has been carried out to make the socio-economic impact assessment of livelihood security in agriculture, animal husbandry and aquaculture on the tsunami-hit lands of Andaman. Data have been collected from 150 sample respondents and the survey has been conducted for two periods, pre-tsunami and post-tsunami. The results have indicated that tsunami has ravaged the households, standing crops, farm inputs such as seed, feed and implements, livestock and poultry population, their sheds, fish ponds, etc., thereby affecting the basic livelihood security of the people in Andaman. The rehabilitation measures taken by the government and NGOs have improved their livelihoods by reviving agriculture considerably in the subsequent years and by creating employment opportunities in various farm and non-farm activities. India is a country with immense fishing and culture potential. The unscientific
practices carried out in this sector have led it to a chaotic condition from which it is high
time to get rid off. Management of the sector in an efficient way will help its1evival from the
prevailing situation. Policies are steps taken with a futuristic outlook. It's a relatively new
term in the fishery sector. Policies taken in the past by European nations in the sector
were well organized and adoption of such models may help to cut a new fishery policy for

Village Baseline Study: Site Analysis Report for Vaishali, Mukundpur Village, India
The baseline effort consists of three components – a household survey, village study and organisational survey. The household baseline survey, a quantitative questionnaire on basic indicators of welfare, information sources, livelihood/agriculture/natural resource management strategies, needs and uses of climate and agricultural-related information and current risk management, mitigation and adaptation practices, was implemented by CCAFS partners in 35 sites (245 villages) with nearly 5,000 households in 12 countries to date. CCAFS partners are implementing village baseline studies (VBS) and organisational surveys in one out of the seven villages within each CCAFS site where the household survey was implemented. The plan is to revisit these villages in roughly 5 years, and again in 10 years, to monitor what changes have occurred since the baseline was carried out. The goal is not to attribute these changes to the program, but to be able to assess what kinds of changes have occurred and whether these changes are helping villages adapt to, and mitigate, climate change. The focus of this site analysis report is the VBS. To date, seventeen VBS were conducted. The VBS aims to provide baseline information at the village level about some basic indicators of natural resource utilisation, organisational landscapes, information networks for weather and agricultural information, as well as mitigation baseline information, which can be compared across sites and monitored over time
Village Baseline Study: Site Analysis Report for Haryana - Karnal, India
This is the report of the village baseline study of Pakhana in the CCAFS benchmark site of Karnal, India conducted from March 15-17, 2013 to complement an earlier household baseline survey done in the same village. Pakhana is located in the fertile flat land of the Indo-Gangetic plains and has good access to roads, markets, electricity and communication. The community has not experienced a food crisis and 90% of the population enjoys year-round food security. Pakhana benefited from the Green Revolution and has adopted improved varieties and the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. However, Pakhana now faces challenges resulting from population growth, deforestation, reduced and variable rainfall, declining soil fertility and organic matter, monocropping, over application of chemical inputs, and depletion of the water table. As a result, access to water resources is more difficult, profits have decreased and production is constrained. Without adjustments, Pakhana’s food security, livelihoods and natural resources will be further strained and threatened
Fishers in Post-harvest Fisheries Sector in India : An Assessment of Socio-economic Status
This paper presents the results of study carried out
during 2009-11, to assess literacy, health and income
status of fishers in India with reference to postharvest
sector which covered fishers in marketing
and processing. The study covered five states and
one union territory, covering 11 districts reaching
548 households. About 52.19% of the respondents
fell in the age group of 36-55. The average male- female ratio was 1.03 and 66.61% of the families
were in the small family category of 2-4 members.
It was observed that the literacy rates among fishers
in post-harvest sector in different states ranged from
63.74 to 95.81%. In general, the literacy rates were
comparable to the national average. Maternal and
child mortality were low in the sample studied and
the average birth weight of infants was 2.68 kg. The
average monthly income was Rs. 7027.45 with a
daily income of Rs. 234.25. About 44.70% of the
households had no savings and 47.81% of households
were in debt

The present study is a rapid assessment of socio-economic status to estimate income, illiteracy and health of reservoir
fishersinsevenstatesoflndia.stmctureddatafrom4l5fishermenwerecollected. The result indicated that against the
Indian average literacy rate of '74.52o/o the literacy rate of 63.32% was recorded among the sampled hshers. The school
dropouts were more at secondary level of education(57 .75%o ). Fishers' children were vaccinated in most of the states
as per the recommendation of Indian Council of Medical Research. The average monthly expenditure of the households
was worked out to be Rs. 3148.3 only, which is very low to sustain livelihood; often lead to indebtness
Control of Switching Characteristics of Silicon-based Semiconductor Diode Using High Energy Linear Accelerator
This paper reports control of switching characteristics of silicon-based semiconductor diode using electron beam produced using linear accelerator. Conventionally, p-n junction chips of diode are exposed to gamma rays from a radioactive source or electron beam from a microtron, depending upon the required level of correction. High energy linear accelerators featuring simultaneous exposure of multiple chips are recent advancements in radiation technology. The paper presents the results of the radiation process using a 10 MeV linear accelerator as applied in industrial manufacturing of a high voltage diode (2600 V). The achieved values of reverse recovery time were found to be within the design limits. The suitability of the new process was verified by constructing the trade-off curve between the switching and conduction parameters of the diode for the complete range using large number of experimental samples. The paper summarizes the advantages of the new process over the conventional methods specifically with reference to industrial requirements. The developed process has been successfully implemented in semiconductor manufacturing.

A model for interacting instabilities and texture dynamics of patterns
A simple model to study interacting instabilities and textures of resulting
patterns for thermal convection is presented. The model consisting of
twelve-mode dynamical system derived for periodic square lattice describes
convective patterns in the form of stripes and patchwork quilt. The interaction
between stationary zig-zag stripes and standing patchwork quilt pattern leads
to spatiotemporal patterns of twisted patchwork quilt. Textures of these
patterns, which depend strongly on Prandtl number, are investigated numerically
using the model. The model also shows an interesting possibility of a
multicritical point, where stability boundaries of four different structures
