Imaging diagnosis-computed tomography of traction bronchiectasis secondary to pulmonary fibrosis in a Patterdale Terrier
An 8-year-old, Patterdale terrier was referred for evaluation of tachypnoea, exercise intolerance, and weight loss. Computed tomographic images showed pneumomediastinum, diffuse pulmonary ground glass opacity, and marked dilatation of peripheral bronchi, but no evidence of thickened bronchial walls. The histopathologic diagnosis was diffuse pulmonary interstitial fibrosis, type II pneumocyte hyperplasia, and bronchiectasis. The lack of evidence of primary bronchitis supported a diagnosis of traction bronchiectasis. Traction bronchiectasis can occur as a sequela to pulmonary fibrosis in dogs. Do social networking groups support online petitions?

This paper aims to provide some insights into how ePetitions are perceived and supported by social networking sites. The connection between the UK government’s ePetitioning system and social networking groups linking to governmental petitions was investigated. Online data from Facebook were collected and analysed with respect to numbers of supporters compared to official signatures. The results indicate that although the process of signing an official petition is not more complex than joining a Facebook group, the membership of respective Facebook groups can be much higher. In particular, certain topics experienced very high support on Facebook which did not convert to signatures. Magnetohydrodynamic normal mode analysis of plasma with equilibrium pressure anisotropy
In this work, we generalise linear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability theory
to include equilibrium pressure anisotropy in the fluid part of the analysis. A
novel 'single-adiabatic' (SA) fluid closure is presented which is complementary
to the usual 'double-adiabatic' (CGL) model and has the advantage of naturally
reproducing exactly the MHD spectrum in the isotropic limit. As with MHD and
CGL, the SA model neglects the anisotropic perturbed pressure and thus loses
non-local fast-particle stabilisation present in the kinetic approach. Another
interesting aspect of this new approach is that the stabilising terms appear
naturally as separate viscous corrections leaving the isotropic SA closure
unchanged. After verifying the self-consistency of the SA model, we re-derive
the projected linear MHD set of equations required for stability analysis of
tokamaks in the MISHKA code. The cylindrical wave equation is derived
analytically as done previously in the spectral theory of MHD and clear
predictions are made for the modification to fast-magnetosonic and slow ion

An assessment of apple varieties for their suitability in organic production systems
Twenty seven varieties of apple were assessed for their susceptibility to apple scab,
mildew and rosy apple aphid in a replicated experiment at East Malling Research. The
varieties most affected by mildew were Goldrush, DL11, Liberty, Bohemia and Pinova.
Ceeval, Discovery, Edward VII, Howgate Wonder, Rajka, Rebella and Topaz had the
lowest incidences of mildew. The highest incidence of scab occurred on Pilot and Pinova,
but infestation was low throughout the assessment period. In 2006 when aphid populations
were high, Liberty, Goldrush and Delorina had no aphid infestations, and low infestations
were seen on Edward VII, Resi and Santana

Visual examination apparatus
An automated visual examination apparatus for measuring visual sensitivity and mapping blind spot location including a projection system for displaying to a patient a series of visual stimuli. A response switch enables him to indicate his reaction to the stimuli, and a recording system responsive to both the visual stimuli per se and the patient's response. Gastroprotective effects of oral nucleotide administration
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Nucleotides form the building blocks of DNA and are marketed as dietary supplements, alone or in combination with other ingredients, to promote general health. However, there has been only limited scientific study regarding the true biological activity of orally administered nucleotides. We therefore tested their efficacy in a variety of models of epithelial injury and repair. METHODS: Effects on proliferation ([(3)H] thymidine incorporation) and restitution (cell migration of wounded monolayers) were analysed using HT29 and IEC6 cells. The ability of a nucleotide mixture to influence gastric injury when administered orally and subcutaneously was analysed using a rat indomethacin (20 mg/kg) restraint model. RESULTS: In both cell lines, cell migration was increased by approximately twofold when added at 1 mg/ml (p<0.01); synergistic responses were seen when a mixture of nucleotides was used. Cell proliferation was stimulated by adenosine monophosphate (AMP) in HT29, but not in IEC6, cells. Gastric injury was reduced by approximately 60% when gavaged at 4–16 mg/ml (p<0.05), concentrations similar to those likely to be found in consumers taking nucleotide supplements. Systemic administration of nucleotides was unhelpful. CONCLUSIONS: Nucleotides possess biological activity when analysed in a variety of models of injury and repair and could provide a novel inexpensive approach for the prevention and treatment of the injurious effects of non steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs and other ulcerative conditions of the bowel. Plant-wide optimization of a full-scale activated sludge plant with anaerobic sludge treatment
Cortical pain responses in human infants
Despite the recent increase in our understanding of the development of pain processing, it is still not known whether premature infants are capable of processing pain at a cortical level. In this study, changes in cerebral oxygenation over the somatosensory cortex were measured in response to noxious stimulation using real-time near-infrared spectroscopy in 18 infants aged between 25 and 45 weeks postmenstrual age. The noxious stimuli were heel lances performed for routine blood sampling; no blood tests were performed solely for the purpose of the study. Noxious stimulation produced a clear cortical response, measured as an increase in total hemoglobin concentration [HbT] in the contralateral somatosensory cortex, from 25 weeks (mean Delta[HbT] = 7.74 mu mol/L; SE, 1.10). Cortical responses were significantly greater in awake compared with sleeping infants, with a mean difference of 6.63 mu mol/L [95% confidence interval (CI) limits: 2.35, 10.91 mu mol/L; mean age, 35.2 weeks]. In awake infants, the response in the contralateral somatosensory cortex increased with age ( regression coefficient, 0.698 mu mol/L/week; 95% CI limits: 0.132, 1.265 mu mol/L/week) and the latency decreased with age (regression coefficient, -0.9861 mu mol/L/week; 95% CI limits: -1.5361, -0.4361 mu mol/L/week; age range, 25-38 weeks). The response was modality specific because no response was detected after non-noxious stimulation of the heel, even when accompanied by reflex withdrawal of the foot. We conclude that noxious information is transmitted to the preterm infant cortex from 25 weeks, highlighting the potential for both higher-level pain processing and pain-induced plasticity in the human brain from a very early age
