Praesphaerammina, a new genus of Cenozoic deep-water agglutinated foraminifera from the Carpathian flysch deposits

The genus Praesphaerammina Kaminski and Filipcscu is newly described based on a revision of the type species Cystammina subgaleata Vasicek 1947. The genus differs from the Holocene genus Sphaerammina Cushman 1910 emend. Loeblich and Tappan 1964, in possessing a less embracing final chamber and in its interio-areal to areal aperture that lacks any tooth. The definition of the subfamily Sphaeramminae is accordingly emended as well. The genus is common in the Eocene of the Carpathian flysch deposits, but the type species Praesphaerammina subgaleata (Vasicek 1947) is also observed in the Caribbean region and West Africa, where it ranges into the Miocene

Anaesthesiology trainees and their needs: a Romanian perspective. Results from a European survey

Anaesthesiology training is going through continuous transformations worldwide. Recent data from a European Survey on anaesthesiology postgraduate trainees and their concerns have been published for the first time, following an initiative by the European Society of Anaesthesiology. Among the responders of this survey, 10.8% were represented by Romanian trainees. The main needs of the Romanian anaesthesiology trainees who completed the questionnaire were, in descending order educational contents/EDAIC, technical skills, exchange programmes, residency workload, residency costs and autonomy transition. Another observation coming from the analysed data is that Romanian anaesthesiologists in training are highly concerned and interested in the field of intensive care medicine. In-beam fast-timing measurements in 103,105,107Cd

Fast-timing measurements were performed recently in the region of the medium-mass 103,105,107Cd isotopes, produced in fusion evaporation reactions. Emitted gamma-rays were detected by eight HPGe and five LaBr3:Ce detectors working in coincidence. Results on new and re-evaluated half-lives are discussed within a systematic of transition rates. The $7/2_1^+$ states in 103,105,107Cd are interpreted as arising from a single-particle excitation. The half-life analysis of the $11/2_1^-$ states in 103,105,107Cd shows no change in the single-particle transition strength as a function of the neutron number

Intraoperative transfusion practices in Europe

Background: Transfusion of allogeneic blood influences outcome after surgery. Despite widespread availability of transfusion guidelines, transfusion practices might vary among physicians, departments, hospitals and countries. Our aim was to determine the amount of packed red blood cells (pRBC) and blood products transfused intraoperatively, and to describe factors determining transfusion throughout Europe. Methods: We did a prospective observational cohort study enrolling 5803 patients in 126 European centres that received at least one pRBC unit intraoperatively, during a continuous three month period in 2013. Results: The overall intraoperative transfusion rate was 1.8%; 59% of transfusions were at least partially initiated as a result of a physiological transfusion trigger-mostly because of hypotension (55.4%) and/or tachycardia (30.7%). Haemoglobin (Hb)-based transfusion trigger alone initiated only 8.5% of transfusions. The Hb concentration [mean (SD)] just before transfusion was 8.1 (1.7) g dl(-1) and increased to 9.8 (1.8) g dl(-1) after transfusion. The mean number of intraoperatively transfused pRBC units was 2.5 (2.7) units (median 2). Conclusions: Although European Society of Anaesthesiology transfusion guidelines are moderately implemented in Europe with respect to Hb threshold for transfusion (7-9 g dl(-1)), there is still an urgent need for further educational efforts that focus on the number of pRBC units to be transfused at this threshold

Half-lives of the 19/2+ and 21/2+ states in 95Mo and of the 8+ and 10+ states in 96Mo were measured.
