Radio Images of 3C 58: Expansion and Motion of its Wisp
New 1.4 GHz VLA observations of the pulsar-powered supernova remnant 3C 58
have resulted in the highest-quality radio images of this object to date. The
images show filamentary structure over the body of the nebula. The present
observations were combined with earlier ones from 1984 and 1991 to investigate
the variability of the radio emission on a variety of time-scales. No
significant changes are seen over a 110 day interval. In particular, the upper
limit on the apparent projected velocity of the wisp is 0.05c. The expansion
rate of the radio nebula was determined between 1984 and 2004, and is
0.014+/-0.003%/year, corresponding to a velocity of 630+/-70 km/s along the
major axis. If 3C 58 is the remnant of SN 1181, it must have been strongly
decelerated, which is unlikely given the absence of emission from the supernova
shell. Alternatively, the low expansion speed and a number of other arguments
suggest that 3C 58 may be several thousand years old and not be the remnant of

Gas of self-avoiding loops on the brickwork lattice
An exact calculation of the phase diagram for a loop gas model on the
brickwork lattice is presented. The model includes a bending energy. In the
dense limit, where all the lattice sites are occupied, a phase transition
occuring at an asymmetric Lifshitz tricritical point is observed as the
temperature associated with the bending energy is varied. Various critical
exponents are calculated. At lower densities, two lines of transitions (in the
Ising universality class) are observed, terminated by a tricritical point,
where there is a change in the modulation of the correlation function. To each

A Sequential Mixed Method Study of Employee Job Satisfaction in Upscale Restaurants, Malaysia
The study determines the main factors affecting job satisfaction in upscale restaurants and their degree of comparative influence. The research initially involves qualitative data analysis of 20 interviews with restaurant employees representing five upscale restaurants in Kuala Lumpur (KL), followed by structural equation modeling of data retrieved from 368 questionnaires from 16 KL restaurants. The impact variance of four main determinants of job satisfaction are revealed, where the âworking environmentâ has the highest impact, followed by âpayment and compensation,â âpromotionâ, and finally, âworkplace fairnessâ. Crucially, âworkplace relationshipsâ have a moderating effect on the relationship between the âwork environmentâ and job satisfaction, implicating industry-applied recommendations to strengthen job satisfaction levels
Auralization of Amplitude Modulated Helicopter Flyover Noise
Rotorcraft noise is an active field of study as the sound produced by these vehicles is often found to be annoying. A means to auralize rotorcraft flyover noise is sought to help understand the factors leading to annoyance. Previous work by the authors auralized a complete flyover event in which the source noise synthesis traversed a range of emission angles. The source noise definition process for the synthesis used helicopter flyover recordings. Although this process yielded both periodic and aperiodic (modulation) components at a set of discrete emission angles, only the periodic components were used in the previous work to synthesize the sound of the flyover event. In the current work, aperiodic amplitude modulation is incorporated into the source noise synthesis to improve its fidelity toward assessing rotorcraft noise annoyance. The method is demonstrated using ground recordings from a flight test of the AS350 helicopter for the source noise definition
Dyadic Characteristics and Intimate Partner Violence among Men Who Have Sex with Men
Objective: Although the research community has begun to recognize intimate partner violence (IPV) as an important issue in same-sex relationships, there has been a lack of attention to characteristics of these relationships that may be associated with IPV. In particular, there has been a lack of attention paid to the associations between dyadic characteristics and IPV in same-sex relationships. This paper examined associations between dyadic characteristics, including relationship satisfaction, communal coping and efficacy, and perpetrating and experiencing IPV among a sample of United States men who have sex with men (MSM). Methods: We collected data via an online survey with 528 MSM, who were greater than 18 years of age and reported at least one male sex partner in the last 12 months. The analysis examined dyadic factors associated with reporting of experiencing and perpetrating emotional violence, physical violence, and sexual violence. Results: The prevalence of violence in the sample ranged from nine percent reporting perpetrating sexual violence to 33% of men reporting experiencing emotional violence. MSM who reported greater satisfaction with their relationship or who reported a higher degree of concordance with their partner on lifestyle choices were less likely to report experiencing or perpetrating emotional violence. MSM who perceived a stigma to being in a male same-sex couple were less likely to report experiencing or perpetrating sexual violence. Conclusion: The results presented here demonstrate high levels of IPV among MSM and that dyadic characteristics are associated with the occurrence of IPV. Understanding relationship characteristics associated with increased IPV among same-sex male couples can contribute to the development of more accurate IPV screening tools, and more sensitively and appropriately designed intervention messages. An experimental investigation of chatter effects on tool life
Tool wear is one of the most important considerations in machining operations as it affects surface quality and integrity, productivity and cost. The most commonly used model for tool life analysis is the one proposed by F.W. Taylor about a century ago. Although the extended form of this equation includes the effects of important cutting conditions on tool wear, tool life studies are mostly performed under stable cutting conditions where the effect of chatter vibrations are not considered. This paper presents an empirical attempt to understand tool life under vibratory cutting conditions. Tool wear data are collected in turning and milling on different work materials under stable and chatter conditions. The effects of cutting conditions as well as severity of chatter on tool life are analyzed. The results indicate significant reduction in tool life due to chatter as expected. They also show that the severity of chatter, and thus the vibration amplitude, strongly reduces the life of cutting tools. These results can be useful in evaluating the real cost of chatter by including the reduced tool life. They can also be useful in justifying the cost of chatter suppression and more rigid machining systems
Canadian Arctic Tide Measurement Techniques and Results
About 10 years ago the Canadian Hydrographic Service recognized the need for a planned approach to completing tide and current surveys of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago in order to meet the requirements of marine shipping and construction industries as well as the needs of environmental studies related to resource development. Therefore, a program of tidal surveys was begun which has resulted in a data base of tidal records covering most of the Archipelago. In this paper the problems faced by tidal surveyors and others working in the harsh Arctic environment are described and the variety of equipment and techniques developed for short, medium and long-term deployments are reported. The tidal characteristics throughout the Archipelago, determined primarily from these surveys, are briefly summarized. It was also recognized that there would be a need for real time tidal data by engineers, surveyors and mariners. Since the existing permanent tide gauges in the Arctic do not have this capability, a project was started in the early 1980âs to develop and construct a new permanent gauging system. Frustrated quantum Heisenberg ferrimagnetic chains
We study the ground-state properties of weakly frustrated Heisenberg
ferrimagnetic chains with nearest and next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic
exchange interactions and two types of alternating sublattice spins S_1 > S_2,
using 1/S spin-wave expansions, density-matrix renormalization group, and
exact- diagonalization techniques. It is argued that the zero-point spin
fluctuations completely destroy the classical commensurate- incommensurate
continuous transition. Instead, the long-range ferrimagnetic state disappears
through a discontinuous transition to a singlet state at a larger value of the
frustration parameter. In the ferrimagnetic phase we find a disorder point
marking the onset of incommensurate real-space short-range spin-spin

Uncertainty-principle noise in vacuum-tunneling transducers
The fundamental sources of noise in a vacuum-tunneling probe used as an
electromechanical transducer to monitor the location of a test mass are
examined using a first-quantization formalism. We show that a tunneling
transducer enforces the Heisenberg uncertainty principle for the position and
momentum of a test mass monitored by the transducer through the presence of two
sources of noise: the shot noise of the tunneling current and the momentum
fluctuations transferred by the tunneling electrons to the test mass. We
analyze a number of cases including symmetric and asymmetric rectangular
potential barriers and a barrier in which there is a constant electric field.
Practical configurations for reaching the quantum limit in measurements of the
position of macroscopic bodies with such a class of transducers are studied
Complex-Temperature Singularities in the Ising Model. III. Honeycomb Lattice
We study complex-temperature properties of the uniform and staggered
susceptibilities and of the Ising model on the honeycomb
lattice. From an analysis of low-temperature series expansions, we find
evidence that and both have divergent singularities at the
point (where ), with exponents
. The critical amplitudes at this
singularity are calculated. Using exact results, we extract the behaviour of
the magnetisation and specific heat at complex-temperature
singularities. We find that, in addition to its zero at the physical critical
point, diverges at with exponent , vanishes
continuously at with exponent , and vanishes
discontinuously elsewhere along the boundary of the complex-temperature
ferromagnetic phase. diverges at with exponent
and at (where ) with exponent , and
diverges logarithmically at . We find that the exponent relation
is violated at ; the right-hand side is 4
rather than 2. The connections of these results with complex-temperature
