Search for time-dependent B0s - B0s-bar oscillations using a vertex charge dipole technique

We report a search for B0s - B0s-bar oscillations using a sample of 400,000 hadronic Z0 decays collected by the SLD experiment. The analysis takes advantage of the electron beam polarization as well as information from the hemisphere opposite that of the reconstructed B decay to tag the B production flavor. The excellent resolution provided by the pixel CCD vertex detector is exploited to cleanly reconstruct both B and cascade D decay vertices, and tag the B decay flavor from the charge difference between them. We exclude the following values of the B0s - B0s-bar oscillation frequency: Delta m_s < 4.9 ps-1 and 7.9 < Delta m_s < 10.3 ps-1 at the 95% confidence level.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, replaced by version accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.D; results differ slightly from first versio

New application of GIS and statistical analysis in mapping the distribution of quaternary calcrete (Tensift Al Haouz area, Central Morocco)

Quaternary calcretes are widespread in soils of many regions of the world especially in semi arid and arid areas. Their development has been studied worldwide for more than a century involving various disciplines and resulting in large amounts of data concerning their evolution. In this article, the geographical distribution of calcrete has been studied by combining Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and statistical analysis. In this paper, we present a qualitative approach that incorporates topographic, geological, hydrogeological and climatic data as well as field observations. After getting all four parameters, they were divided into classes and an index value has been assigned to each of them according to influence degree on calcrete development. Finally, all the parameters are superimposed to prepare the final map of calcrete distribution. The multivariate statistical analysis techniques used were principal component analysis and cluster analysis. Both methods were performed to discuss the potential relations among the investigated parametres (CaCO3 (%), Palygorskite (%), slope (%)) and calcrete evolution. The qualitative approach adopted provided a distribution map predicting the possible areas where different calcrete forms might occur and allowed to elucidate the degree of influence of environmental factors on the evolution of calcrete. The accuracy of this method has been estimated by comparing it with 52 cross-section data from the field. This approach proved to be successful in this study. The results of statistical analysis confirm the results obtained using GIS method and highlight the influence of the studied environmental factors on the spatial distribution of different types of calcrete

The elbow tuberculosis: rare and exceptional localization

    No full text
The tuberculosis of the elbow is an exceptional localization of the mycobacterium tuberculosis. This raises a diagnostic problem which is often tardy. This could therefore, have important consequences. We report 2 cases of chronic arthritis of the elbow, where the diagnosis was built on the anatomic-pathology investigation. In addition to the surgical synovectomy, the antibacillar treatment had stopped the infection. This led to stiffness of the elbow in one of these two patients. Through these observations, we discuss the rarity of this tuberculosis localization which must be treated promptly to avoid heavy consequences.

A Case of a Metastatic Disease to the Pancreas from a Small-Cell Lung Carcinoma Documented by a CT-Scan-Guided Trucut Biopsy: The Diagnostic Role of Cytomorphology and Immunohistochemistry

Unlike primary pancreatic carcinoma, metastatic lesions of the pancreas are uncommon and account for approximately 2% of pancreatic malignancies. Small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) represents a group of highly malignant tumors giving rise to early and widespread metastasis at the time of diagnosis. However, the pancreas is a relatively infrequent site of metastasis by this neoplasm, and reports on metastatic small-cell carcinoma (SCC) in the pancreas, either of pulmonary or extrapulmonary origin, to be diagnosed by CT-scan-guided trucut biopsy (CT-TCB) are very rare. A 56-year-old man presented with a laterocervical lymphadenopathy associated to a mixed-density lung mass and a mass in the pancreatic body. CT-TCB slides from the pancreatic mass contained small, round tumor cells with extensive nuclear molding. The cytomorphological and histological diagnosis was metastatic SCC. Immunocytochemical staining showed that a variable number of neoplastic cells were positive for cytokeratin 7, TTF1, chromogranin A, and synaptophysin but negative for leukocyte common antigen and cytokeratin 20 with a very high expression of KI67. The transbronchial needle biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of an SCC. This case represents a rare metastatic lesion in the pancreas from SCLC, diagnosed by CT-TCB histological and immunohistochemical studies
