On the Orbital Period of the Intermediate Polar 1WGA J1958.2+3232
Recently, Norton et al. 2002, on the basis of multiwavelength photometry of
1WGA J1958.2+3232, argued that the -1 day alias of the strongest peak in the
power spectrum is the true orbital period of the system, casting doubts on the
period estimated by Zharikov et al. 2001. We re-analyzed this system using our
photometric and spectroscopic data along with the data kindly provided by Andy
Norton and confirm our previous finding. After refining our analysis we find

Optimal placement of a limited number of observations for period searches
Robotic telescopes present the opportunity for the sparse temporal placement
of observations when period searching. We address the best way to place a
limited number of observations to cover the dynamic range of frequencies
required by an observer. We show that an observation distribution geometrically
spaced in time can minimise aliasing effects arising from sparse sampling,
substantially improving signal detection quality. The base of the geometric
series is however a critical factor in the overall success of this strategy.
Further, we show that for such an optimal distribution observations may be
reordered, as long as the distribution of spacings is preserved, with almost no
loss of quality. This implies that optimal observing strategies can retain
significant flexibility in the face of scheduling constraints, by providing
scope for on-the-fly adaptation. Finally, we present optimal geometric
samplings for a wide range of common observing scenarios, with an emphasis on
practical application by the observer at the telescope. Such a sampling
represents the best practical empirical solution to the undersampling problem
that we are aware of. The technique has applications to robotic telescope and
satellite observing strategies, where target acquisition overheads mean that a
greater total target exposure time (and hence signal-to-noise) can often in

Bij Praktijkonderzoek Pluimveehouderij 'Het Spelderholt' is daarom een proef uitgevoerd om er zeker van te zijn dat het niet meer keren van de eieren na twee weken broeden niet schadelijk is voor de ontwikkeling van het embryo, en dat andere factoren de broeduitkomsten mogelijk kunnen verbeteren

Het Praktijkonderzoek Pluimveehouderij Het Spelderholt (PP) heeft onderzoek gedaan naar een techniek die de broeduitkomsten van lang bewaarde broedeieren kan verhogen. Het in de bewaarperiode opwarmen van lang bewaarde broedeieren had tot gevolg dat er minder eieren als onbevrucht werden geclassificeerd, en dat er minder embryos dood gingen in de eerste drie broeddagen. Doordat er vanaf de vierde dag van het broedproces meer embryos dood gingen van deze groep opgewarmde eieren, werd er uiteindelijk geen verschil gevonden in de broeduitkomsten
Empirical modeling of the stellar spectrum of galaxies
An empirical method of modeling the stellar spectrum of galaxies is proposed,
based on two successive applications of Principal Component Analysis (PCA). PCA
is first applied to the newly available stellar library STELIB, supplemented by
the J, H and K magnitudes taken mainly from the 2 Micron All Sky Survey
(2MASS). Next the resultant eigen-spectra are used to fit the observed spectra
of a sample of 1016 galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data
Release One (SDSS DR1). PCA is again applied, to the fitted spectra to
construct the eigen-spectra of galaxies with zero velocity dispersion. The
first 9 galactic eigen-spectra so obtained are then used to model the stellar
spectrum of the galaxies in SDSS DR1, and synchronously to estimate the stellar
velocity dispersion, the spectral type, the near-infrared SED, and the average
reddening. Extensive tests show that the spectra of different type galaxies can
be modeled quite accurately using these eigen-spectra. The method can yield
stellar velocity dispersion with accuracies better than 10%, for the spectra of

An Accurate, Easy to Use Abundace Scale for Globular Clusters Based on 2.2um Spectra of Giant Stars
We present a new method for the determination of [Fe/H] for globular
clusters. This new method is based on moderate resolution (R~1500) near-IR
spectroscopy in the K-band of 6 to 10 of the brightest giants in a cluster. Our
calibration is derived from spectra of 105 stars in 15 globular clusters. From
measurements of the equivalent widths of three features in these spectra, Na,
Ca, and CO, we are able to reproduce the Zinn & West (1984) abundance scale as
updated by Harris (1996) to better than 0.10 dex for clusters with near solar
[Fe/H] down to an [Fe/H] of -1.8. Three advantages of this method are that it
can be used for metal rich, heavily reddened globulars in crowded fields, it
does not require any knowledge of any other cluster or stellar parameters such
as reddening, distance, or luminosity, and it requires only minimal telescope
time. If stellar (J-K)0 and MK values are available as well, the accuracy of
the [Fe/H] estimate is further improved. Observations of as few as three stars
per cluster still gives an [Fe/H] estimate wich is nearly as reliable as that
based on two to three times as many stars.
The accuracy of an [Fe/H] value based on observations of CO absorption alone
is significantly less than that which results from the three spectroscopic
indices. However, we predict that space-based observations of this feature in
the integrated light of stellar systems will prove to be of great value for

Conceptualizing community resilience to natural hazards - the emBRACE framework
Abstract. The level of community is considered to be vital for building disaster resilience. Yet, community resilience as a scientific concept often remains vaguely defined and lacks the guiding characteristics necessary for analysing and enhancing resilience on the ground. The emBRACE framework of community resilience presented in this paper provides a heuristic analytical tool for understanding, explaining and measuring community resilience to natural hazards. It was developed in an iterative process building on existing scholarly debates, on empirical case study work in five countries and on participatory consultation with community stakeholders, where the framework was applied and ground-tested in different contexts and for different hazard types. The framework conceptualizes resilience across three core domains: resources and capacities; actions; and learning. These three domains are conceptualized as intrinsically conjoined within a whole. Community resilience is influenced by these integral elements as well as by extra-community forces, comprising disaster risk governance and thus laws, policies and responsibilities on the one hand and on the other, the general societal context, natural and human-made disturbances and system change over time. The framework is a graphically rendered heuristic, which through application can assist in guiding the assessment of community resilience in a systematic way and identifying key drivers and barriers of resilience that affect any particular hazard-exposed community
Effect of egg turning and incubation time on carbonic anhydrase gene expression in the blastoderm of the Japanese quail (Coturnix c. japonica)
(1) The gene expression of carbonic anhydrase, a key enzyme for the production sub-embryonic fluid (SEF), was assessed in turned and unturned eggs of the Japanese quail. The plasma membrane-associated isoforms CA IV, CAIX, CA XII, CA XIV, and the cytoplasmic isoform CA II, were
investigated in the extra-embryonic tissue of the blastoderm and in embryonic blood.
(2) Eggs were incubated at 37.6C, c. 60% R.H., and turned hourly (90 ) or left unturned. From 48 to 96 hours of incubation mRNA was extracted from blastoderm tissue, reverse-transcribed to cDNA and quantified by real-time qPCR using gene-specific primers. Blood collected at 96h was processed identically.
(3) Blastoderm CAIV gene expression increased with the period of incubation only in turned eggs, with maxima at 84 and 96h of incubation. Only very low levels were found in blood.
(4) Blastoderm CA II gene expression was greatest at 48 and 54h of incubation, subsequently declining to much lower levels and una ected by turning. Blood CA II gene expression was about 25-fold greater than that in the blastoderm.
(5) The expression of CA IX in the blastoderm was the highest of all isoforms, yet unaffected by turning.
CA XII did not amplify and CA XIV was present at unquantifiable low levels.
(6) It is concluded that solely gene expression for CA IV is sensitive to egg turning, and that increased CA IV gene expression could account for the additional SEF mass found at 84-96h of incubation.

Flood resilience community pathfinder evaluation: rapid evidence assessment
The increase in the risk of flooding as a result of extreme weather and climate change makes it essential for local authorities and communities to engage with this issue. Defra is providing grant funding to 13 local authorities throughout England under a new Flood Resilience Community Pathfinder (FRCP) scheme aimed at stimulating community action to increase resilience. The measures being developed include property-level protection, flood resilience groups, volunteer flood wardens and community champions, engagement with more vulnerable groups and efforts to increase financial resilience
