    A software control system for the ACTS high-burst-rate link evaluation terminal

    Control and performance monitoring of NASA's High Burst Rate Link Evaluation Terminal (HBR-LET) is accomplished by using several software control modules. Different software modules are responsible for controlling remote radio frequency (RF) instrumentation, supporting communication between a host and a remote computer, controlling the output power of the Link Evaluation Terminal and data display. Remote commanding of microwave RF instrumentation and the LET digital ground terminal allows computer control of various experiments, including bit error rate measurements. Computer communication allows system operators to transmit and receive from the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS). Finally, the output power control software dynamically controls the uplink output power of the terminal to compensate for signal loss due to rain fade. Included is a discussion of each software module and its applications

    A study of the cornering forces generated by aircraft tires on a tilted, free-swiveling nose gear

    An experimental investigation was conducted to study the effect of various parameters on the cornering forces produced by a rolling aircraft tire installed on a tilted, free-swiveling nose gear. The parameters studied included tilt angle, trial, tire inflation pressure, rake angle, vertical load, and whether or not a twin tire configuration corotates. These parameters were evaluated by measuring the cornering force produced by an aircraft tire installed on the nose gear of a modified vehicle as it was towed slowly. Cornering force coefficient increased with increasing tilt angle. Increasing trial or rake angle decreased the magnitude of the cornering force coefficient. Tire inflation pressure had no effect on the cornering force coefficient. Increasing vertical load decreased the cornering force coefficient. When the tires of a twin tire system rotated independently, the cornering force coefficients were the same as those for the single-tire configuration. When the twin tire system was made to corotate, however, the cornering force coefficients increased significantly

    In graph theory, the game of cops and robbers is played on a finite, connected graph. The players take turns moving along edges as the cops try to capture the robber and the robber tries to evade capture forever. This game has received quite a bit of recent attention including several conjectures that have yet to be proven. In this paper, we restricted our attention to planar graphs in order to try to prove the conjecture that the dodecahedron graph is the smallest planar graph, in terms of vertices, that has cop number three. Along the way we discuss several other graphs with interesting properties connected with the cop number including a proof that the Tutte graph has cop number two

    IFIT (interferon-induced with tetratricopeptide repeats) proteins are critical mediators of mammalian innate antiviral immunity. Mouse IFIT1 selectively inhibits viruses that lack 2'O-methylation of their mRNA 5' caps. Surprisingly, human IFIT1 does not share this antiviral specificity. Here, we resolve this discrepancy by demonstrating that human and mouse IFIT1 have evolved distinct functions using a combination of evolutionary, genetic and virological analyses. First, we show that human IFIT1 and mouse IFIT1 (renamed IFIT1B) are not orthologs, but are paralogs that diverged >100 mya. Second, using a yeast genetic assay, we show that IFIT1 and IFIT1B proteins differ in their ability to be suppressed by a cap 2'O-methyltransferase. Finally, we demonstrate that IFIT1 and IFIT1B have divergent antiviral specificities, including the discovery that only IFIT1 proteins inhibit a virus encoding a cap 2'O-methyltransferase. These functional data, combined with widespread turnover of mammalian IFIT genes, reveal dramatic species-specific differences in IFIT-mediated antiviral repertoires

    SummaryDirected evolution was applied to identify peptide substrates with enhanced hydrolysis rates by MT1-MMP suitable for protease beacon development. Screening of a random pentapeptide library, using two-color CLiPS, yielded several substrates identical to motifs in distinct collagens that shared the consensus sequence P-x-G↓L. To identify substrates with enhanced cleavage rates, a second-generation decapeptide library incorporating the consensus was screened under stringent conditions, which resulted in a MxPLG↓M/LMG/AR consensus motif. These substrates are hydrolyzed by human-MT1-MMP up to six times faster than reported peptide substrates and are stable in plasma. Finally, incubation of soluble protease beacons incorporating the optimized substrates, but not previous substrates, enabled direct detection of endogenous MT1-MMP activity of human-fibrosarcoma (HT-1080) cells. Extended substrate libraries coupled with CLiPS should be useful to generate more effective activity probes for a variety of proteolytic enzymes

    Foreign Cultures, Sarbanes-Oxley Act and Cross-Delisting

    Using a sample of foreign firms delisting shares from the United States over the period 2000 and 2004, this paper studies the impact of Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) on the cross-delisting behavior of foreign firms based on the firm characteristics, legal tradition, overall culture and degree of individualism of the country of domicile. Pre-SOX, the propensity to delist is lower for firms from countries with cultural similarities to the U.S. and higher for firms from individualistic societies. Post-SOX these trends are reversed. Consistent with the existing research we find that the delisting decision of foreign firms cross- listed in the U.S. is based on the potential gains from listing based on the growth opportunities, length of presence in the U.S. and legal regulations of the country of domicile

    To respond to the NIH\u27s policy for rigor and reproducibility in preclinical research, many journals have implemented guidelines and checklists to guide authors in improving the rigor and reproducibility of their research. Transparency in developing detailed prospective experimental designs and providing raw data are essential premises of rigor and reproducibility. Standard peer reviews and journal-specific technical and statistical reviews are critical factors for enhancing rigor and reproducibility. This brief review also shares some experience from Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, an American Heart Association journal, that has implemented several mechanisms to enhance rigor and reproducibility for preclinical research
