    Exploring disempowerment in women’s accounts of endometriosis experiences

    This work explores disempowerment caused by discourses surrounding the life altering gynaecological disease of endometriosis. Despite affecting 1 in 10 women, the worldwide average diagnosis time is 7.5 years and it is mainly diagnosed when exploring infertility rather than complaints about incapacitating pain and other associated manifestations. The aim of this paper is to identify dis/empowerment caused by discourses in the health-care and social environment of women as manifested in their accounts of endometriosis experiences. Having been informed and shaped by a corpus analysis of online forum data, this work explores accounts collected through interviews with women who have endometriosis using discourse analytical tools. Through an examination of the dialectics between micro-level language choices inscribing agency, or lack of, and macro-level discourses in the contexts in which women interact, the findings indicate that disempowerment is mostly a consequence of the perceived lack of agency over achieving diagnosis and knowledge of the condition in order to understand and learn coping strategies. The article concludes with implications for Endometriosis communication practices and suggestions for broader enquiries in the field

    Dynamic Vehicle Routing for Robotic Systems

    Recent years have witnessed great advancements in the science and technology of autonomy, robotics, and networking. This paper surveys recent concepts and algorithms for dynamic vehicle routing (DVR), that is, for the automatic planning of optimal multivehicle routes to perform tasks that are generated over time by an exogenous process. We consider a rich variety of scenarios relevant for robotic applications. We begin by reviewing the basic DVR problem: demands for service arrive at random locations at random times and a vehicle travels to provide on-site service while minimizing the expected wait time of the demands. Next, we treat different multivehicle scenarios based on different models for demands (e.g., demands with different priority levels and impatient demands), vehicles (e.g., motion constraints, communication, and sensing capabilities), and tasks. The performance criterion used in these scenarios is either the expected wait time of the demands or the fraction of demands serviced successfully. In each specific DVR scenario, we adopt a rigorous technical approach that relies upon methods from queueing theory, combinatorial optimization, and stochastic geometry. First, we establish fundamental limits on the achievable performance, including limits on stability and quality of service. Second, we design algorithms, and provide provable guarantees on their performance with respect to the fundamental limits.United States.     Nano-formulation of Ethambutol with multifunctional Graphene Oxide and magnetic nanoparticles retains Its anti-tubercular activity with prospects of improving chemotherapeutic efficacy

    Tuberculosis (TB) is a dreadful bacterial disease, infecting millions of human and cattle every year worldwide. More than 50 years after its discovery, ethambutol continues to be an effective part of the World Health Organization’s recommended frontline chemotherapy against TB. However, the lengthy treatment regimens consisting of a cocktail of antibiotics affect patient compliance. There is an urgent need to improve the current therapy so as to reduce treatment duration and dosing frequency. In this study, we have designed a novel anti-TB multifunctional formulation by fabricating graphene oxide with iron oxide magnetite nanoparticles serving as a nano-carrier on to which ethambutol was successfully loaded. The designed nanoformulation was characterised using various analytical techniques. The release of ethambutol from anti-TB multifunctional nanoparticles formulation was found to be sustained over a significantly longer period of time in phosphate buffer saline solution at two physiological pH (7.4 and 4.8). Furthermore, the nano-formulation showed potent anti-tubercular activity while remaining non-toxic to the eukaryotic cells tested. The results of this in vitro evaluation of the newly designed nano-formulation endorse its further development in vivo

    Saccades and smooth pursuit eye movements in central vertigo

    In order to analyze the diagnostic efficiency of saccadic and pursuit eye movements compared to findings from brain magnetic resonance imaging in patients with central vertigo, 108 patients were selected from 580 dizzy patients as cases of suspected central origin; the saccadic and pursuit eye movements were evaluated by electronystagmography and findings were compared to information from magnetic resonance imaging. The study of oculomotor movements in patients suspected of having a central lesion revealed a 83.3% sensitivity and 21.2% specificity. Restricting consideration to severe alterations in eye movements as indicative of a central origin, this test gives a 71.4% sensitivity and 50.0% specificity. In conclusion, the study of alterations in oculomotor movements, in patients with suspected central lesions, proved to be a test with good sensitivity also compared with results of magnetic resonance imaging

    Exercise prescription to improve clinical practice on cancer patients suffering chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy undergoing treatment: a systematic review

    This document aims to summarize and analyze systematically the current body of evidence about the effects of specific exercise proto- cols on physical function, balance control and quality of life in patients with peripheral neuropathy (PNP) induced by chemotherapy. Methods: Systematic Review, Literature survey Specific terms were identified for the literature research in MEDLINE, Scopus, Bandolier, PEDro, and Web of Science. Only studies pub- lished in peer-reviewed journals written in English language were considered. Four manuscripts were classified as eligible with 88 total participants, with an average of 57.1 years old. Quality appraisal classified two studies as high quality investigations while two with low quality. Results were summarized in the following domains: \u201cCIPN symptoms\u201d, \u201cStatic balance control\u201d, \u201cDynamic balance control\u201d, \u201cQuali- ty of life and Physical function\u201d. Results Specific exercise protocols were able to counteract common symptoms of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) during chemotherapy treatments. Significant improvements were detected on postural control. Additionally, patients\u2019 quality of life and inde- pendence were found ameliorated after exercise sessions, together with reductions on altered sensations and in other peripheral neu- ropathy symptoms. Combined exercise protocols including endurance, strength and sensorimotor training showed larger improvements. Conclusions Exercise prescriptions for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy with CIPN symptoms should be recommended since these exercise interventions appeared as feasible and have been demonstrated as useful tools to counteract some common side effects of chemother- apeutic agents

    Momentum and energy preserving integrators for nonholonomic dynamics

    In this paper, we propose a geometric integrator for nonholonomic mechanical systems. It can be applied to discrete Lagrangian systems specified through a discrete Lagrangian defined on QxQ, where Q is the configuration manifold, and a (generally nonintegrable) distribution in TQ. In the proposed method, a discretization of the constraints is not required. We show that the method preserves the discrete nonholonomic momentum map, and also that the nonholonomic constraints are preserved in average.     'I feel like I am being stabbed by a thousand tiny men’: The challenges of communicating endometriosis pain

    Endometriosis, as a widespread gynecological condition, affects an estimated 1 in 10 women and yet has a worldwide average diagnosis length of 7.5 years. Causing incapacitating pain, among other associated manifestations, the condition severely impacts on women’s lives. This article uses online survey data to investigate how pre-diagnosis endometriosis pain is conceptualized and articulated in order to explore communication challenges reported in early consultations that can potentially be seen to play a role in diagnosis delay. The findings of this study indicate that women feel that they do not have the appropriate tools to describe their pain and, in many instances, feel dismissed therefore prolonging diagnosis. The article finds that the majority of the pain descriptors identified use elaborate metaphorical scenarios to convey the intensity of the pain and concludes with some reflections on the issue of metaphorical language in endometriosis pain communication practices while calling for interdisciplinary work in order to devise appropriate tools for endometriosis pain communication
