Uneducated and Unhealthy: The Plight of Women in Pakistan
The title of this paper is self-explanatory. It discusses
underinvestment in female education and health and the deleterious
effects this has on not only women themselves but on the future
generation which women bring forth and nourish. This underinvestment is
more pronounced in the rural areas of Pakistan where the bulk of the
population resides and where low levels of education, lack of awareness
and access to medical facilities pose a major threat to the development
of a healthy and productive society. Combining macro-level data on
population growth rates, female mortality and literacy with two
micro-level studies based on extensive participant observation and
in-depth interviewing in two Punjabi villages, the data presented in the
paper aims to sensitise the readers of the realities of women's social
existance and of the complexities of female neglect specifically in
terms of education and health. The paper also highlights some of the
dominant cultural notions regarding women which become instrumental in
hampering women's access to education, information and other structures
of power. The confinement of women to narrow domestic and powerless
domains has far-reaching and negative consequences of which statistics
portray a picture
Analysis and Survey of FPGA Based PROFIBUS Board
Fieldbus system has been established as a communication network, used to connect field devices such as sensors, transduser, controller, man machine interface.Currently a large number of global fieldbus standards are available for consumers.Citation of different types of field bus present an analytical review of various fieldbus systemthat how to gather the data from various equipment distributed far away from each other in the field with reduced wiring and cabling requirement, those are the basic components of communication system.
This work also discuss about FPGA based PROFIBUS communication board. It proposes the alternative solution to complexity of communication system and devise it more reliable, high integral and transmission efficient
Investigations of different strategies for high frequency regeneration of Dendrobium malones ‘Victory’
Regeneration of orchid, Dendrobium malones “Victory”, has been established by direct differentiation and through callus formation. With direct thin leaf section differentiation method, the number of protocorm like bodies (PLBs) formed from Thin Section (TS) explants obtainedfrom a single leaf was 10 times more than that from a single whole leaf, in a short time period. This therefore suggested that the proliferation potential is distributed all along the seedling leaves and morphogenically competent cells were not limited in the basal ends or the tips of the leaves in TS of orchid leaf cultures. Full MS media supplemented with auxins/cytokinins either in single orin combination along with peptone, yeast extract, casein hydrolysate (each at 100 mg/l), banana powder (40 g/l), 15% coconut water and 2% sucrose have shown excellent results for high frequency regeneration in orchid cultures. In many higher plants, regenerating leaves responded by developing proliferative loci in some “Predetermined Regenerative” cells in the dermal layers by tissue culture methods
Randomised controlled trial: comparing effects of metformin versus myoinositol versus metformin and myoinositol on ovarian functions and metabolic factors in polycystic ovarian syndrome
Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) characterized by anovulation and features of hyperandrogenism (clinical or biochemical) and insulin resistance. Metformin and myoinositol being insulin sensitizers improve clinical and biochemical parameters. This study was done to compare the effects of these drugs on clinical features and biochemical profile. Methods: A randomized, comparative, clinical study was conducted on 72 patients. The patients were randomized with the help of computer-generated random numbers and were allocated to either of the three treatment groups A, B and C. Patients in group A received metformin 500 mg TDS, group B received myoinositol 1000 mg BD, group C received combination of metformin 500 mg and myoinositol 550 mg BD for 24 weeks. At first visit patients detailed history and baseline investigations were recorded. Follow up was done 24 weeks after start of therapy to assess the improvement in clinical and biochemical profile. Results: There was significant improvement in menstrual irregularities, cutaneous manifestations, pregnancy rate, LH/FSH ratio, insulin sensitivity and HOMA-IR after 24 weeks of treatment in all three groups (p value <0.05), although there was greater improvement in cases treated with combination of metformin and myoinositol than metformin and myoinositol alone. Conclusions: The combination of metformin and myoinositol has resulted in more significant reduction in insulin resistance and improvement in metabolic and hormonal profile along with regularization of menstrual cycles and spontaneous conception than metformin and myoinositol alone
Prevalence and severity of depression among undergraduate students in Karachi, Pakistan: a cross sectional study
Purpose: To highlight the prevalence and severity of depression among undergraduate students in public and private universities in Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: In this cross-sectional study a total of 408 undergraduate students from both public and private universities in Karachi, Pakistan completed Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) questionnaire to appraise the presence and extent of depression among the participants. Their sociodemographic characteristics such as age, gender and course of study as well as drug use data were also collected and analyzed. Results: Depression prevalence was 53.43 % (38.07 % for males and 61.00 % for females). A significant disparity in the prevalence of depression across ethnicity was observed. Less than 50 % (n = 163) of the students were satisfied with their duration of degree course work while 111 (27.20 %) participants were not sure about this. The intensity of depression increased with declining satisfaction level (Gamma = 0.264, p = 0.001) which affected the performance and results of students during their studies. A majority of the participants (89 %, n = 358) of our study have never used medicines to alter their mood. Conclusion: The findings of this study highlight the importance of understanding the unique strains and mental health effect of university education on undergraduate students, especially female students. Keywords: Depression, Undergraduate students, Mood alteration, Zung self-rating depression scale (SDS), Mental health, Risk assessmen
Evolutionary Timescale of the DAV G117-B15A: The Most Stable Optical Clock Known
We observe G117-B15A, the most precise optical clock known, to measure the
rate of change of the main pulsation period of this blue-edge DAV white dwarf.
Even though the obtained value is only within 1 sigma, Pdot = (2.3 +/- 1.4) x
10^{-15} s/s, it is already constraining the evolutionary timescale of this
cooling white dwarf star.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ
