    Energy decay for the damped wave equation under a pressure condition

    We establish the presence of a spectral gap near the real axis for the damped wave equation on a manifold with negative curvature. This results holds under a dynamical condition expressed by the negativity of a topological pressure with respect to the geodesic flow. As an application, we show an exponential decay of the energy for all initial data sufficiently regular. This decay is governed by the imaginary part of a finite number of eigenvalues close to the real axis.Comment: 32 page

    Agricultural and biomedical application of Silver Nanoparticles synthesized by Halimeda gracilis Harvey ex J. Agardh

    The present work is focused on the biosynthesis of the Silver (Ag) Nanoparticles using an aqueous extract of the green seaweed Halimeda gracilis. The visible colour change indicated the biosynthesis of Silver Nanoparticles and the specific peak produced within the UV-Vis spectrum confirmed the biosynthesis of Silver Nanoparticles. The possible functional groups were identified with Fourier Infrared Spectroscopy. The morphological characterization of biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles was done by Scanning Electron Microscopy and Dynamic light scattering measurements and Zeta potential. The average size distribution of Ag-Nanoparticles were 295.9 (d.nm) and fairly stable with a zeta potential value of -28.6 mV. The size of biosynthesized Ag-Nanoparticles was also measured with X-ray diffraction assay. Due to agglomeration, the size difference of biosynthesized Ag-Nanoparticles in case of SEM and EDX occurred. The biosynthesized Ag-Nanoparticles were assayed for their antibacterial activity against some human pathogens and for their potential on seed germination of Abelmoschus esculentus and Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus. The antibacterial activity of biosynthesized Ag Nanoparticles was the highest against Proteus mirabilis (2.33±0.2 cm), followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae, (1±0.0 cm). The effect of biosynthesized Ag-Nanoparticles on the seed germination of Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus was excellent as the germination rate was 100 percent for Ag-Nanoparticles treated seeds, which was better than normal seaweed extract and seaweed liquid fertilizer treated seeds. The seed germination was also good for Abelmoschus esculentus with the treatment of seaweed mediated Ag-Nanoparticles as germination rate was 60 percent. This work proved that seaweed synthesized Ag-Nanoparticles are Phyto-friendly in nature and in future nano-bio fertilizer may be used as the growth promoter and eco-friendly Nano-bio-fertilizer

    The signaling helix: a common functional theme in diverse signaling proteins

    BACKGROUND: The mechanism by which the signals are transmitted between receptor and effector domains in multi-domain signaling proteins is poorly understood. RESULTS: Using sensitive sequence analysis methods we identify a conserved helical segment of around 40 residues in a wide range of signaling proteins, including numerous sensor histidine kinases such as Sln1p, and receptor guanylyl cyclases such as the atrial natriuretic peptide receptor and nitric oxide receptors. We term this helical segment the signaling (S)-helix and present evidence that it forms a novel parallel coiled-coil element, distinct from previously known helical segments in signaling proteins, such as the Dimerization-Histidine phosphotransfer module of histidine kinases, the intra-cellular domains of the chemotaxis receptors, inter-GAF domain helical linkers and the α-helical HAMP module. Analysis of domain architectures allowed us to reconstruct the domain-neighborhood graph for the S-helix, which showed that the S-helix almost always occurs between two signaling domains. Several striking patterns in the domain neighborhood of the S-helix also became evident from the graph. It most often separates diverse N-terminal sensory domains from various C-terminal catalytic signaling domains such as histidine kinases, cNMP cyclase, PP2C phosphatases, NtrC-like AAA+ ATPases and diguanylate cyclases. It might also occur between two sensory domains such as PAS domains and occasionally between a DNA-binding HTH domain and a sensory domain. The sequence conservation pattern of the S-helix revealed the presence of a unique constellation of polar residues in the dimer-interface positions within the central heptad of the coiled-coil formed by the S-helix. CONCLUSION: Combining these observations with previously reported mutagenesis studies on different S-helix-containing proteins we suggest that it functions as a switch that prevents constitutive activation of linked downstream signaling domains. However, upon occurrence of specific conformational changes due to binding of ligand or other sensory inputs in a linked upstream domain it transmits the signal to the downstream domain. Thus, the S-helix represents one of the most prevalent functional themes involved in the flow of signals between modules in diverse prokaryote-type multi-domain signaling proteins.     Framing Matters: The Influence of Group-Image Threat on Reactions To Affirmative Action Policies

    Affirmative action (AA) attempts to rectify the institutional effects of prior employment discrimination toward minority groups. Although AA has played a large role in increasing workplace diversity, organizations may vary in their perspectives towards diversity itself, ranging from a sole focus on increasing diversity to appreciating the value diversity may add. Support for AA has been considered as a form of White identity management (Knowles, Lowery, Chow, & Unzueta, 2014) and is impacted by the extent to which White people experience group-image threat to their racial identity. Our findings suggest that the level of group-image threat experienced by White people impacts both their organizational trust and AA policy attitudes depending on whether the policy rationale was framed around rectifying past discrimination or highlighting the importance of diversity to the organization. These results have implications for how organizations can attract, maintain, and develop a workforce with White employees who value and support diversity

    Delocalization of slowly damped eigenmodes on Anosov manifolds

    We look at the properties of high frequency eigenmodes for the damped wave equation on a compact manifold with an Anosov geodesic flow. We study eigenmodes with spectral parameters which are asymptotically close enough to the real axis. We prove that such modes cannot be completely localized on subsets satisfying a condition of negative topological pressure. As an application, one can deduce the existence of a "strip" of logarithmic size without eigenvalues below the real axis under this dynamical assumption on the set of undamped trajectories.Comment: 28 pages; compared with version 1, minor modifications, add two reference

    Experiences with Mycobacterium leprae soluble antigens in a leprosy endemic population

    Rees and Convit antigens prepared from armadillo-derived Mycobacterium leprae were used for skin testing in two leprosy endemic villages to understand their use in the epidemiology of leprosy. In all, 2602 individuals comprising 202 patients with leprosy detected in a prevalence survey, 476 household contacts and 1924 persons residing in non-case households were tested with two antigens. There was a strong and positive correlation ( r = 0.85) between reactions to the Rees and Convit antigens. The distribution of reactions was bimodal and considering reactions of 12 mm or more as ‘positive’, the positivity rate steeply increased with the increase in age. However. the distributions of reactions to these antigens in patients with leprosy. their household contacts and persons living in non-case households were very similar. These results indicate that Rees and Convit antigens are not useful in the identification of M. leprae infection or in the confirmation of leprosy diagnosis in a leprosy endemic population with a high prevalence of nonspecific sensitivity
