Ferromagnetism in multi--band Hubbard models: From weak to strong Coulomb repulsion

We propose a new mechanism which can lead to ferromagnetism in Hubbard models containing triangles with different on-site energies. It is based on an effective Hamiltonian that we derive in the strong coupling limit. Considering a one-dimensional realization of the model, we show that in the quarter-filled, insulating case the ground-state is actually ferromagnetic in a very large parameter range going from Tasaki's flat-band limit to the strong coupling limit of the effective Hamiltonian. This result has been obtained using a variety of analytical and numerical techniques. Finally, the same results are shown to apply away from quarter-filling, in the metallic case.Comment: 12 pages, revtex, 12 figures, needs epsf and multicol style file

IntroductionThis study planned to investigate the occurrence time of noise induced hearing loss (NRHL) among workers in a loud work environment.Material and MethodsFor this study, the data of 70 workers who work in different departments of a paper factory was examined retrospectively. Workers were allocated in two groups as A (environment’s noise level is under 80 dB) and B (over 85 dB) according to their departments’ noise level. The workers with noise induced hearing loss were determined with the last Pure Tone Audiogram results.ResultsThe median age was 36.98 of 70 workers included 2 females and 68 males. 15 workers with hearing loss were determined. Group B showed twice as many hearing loss results compared to the group A (5 in A and 10 in B groups), however, these results were not found to be statistically significant (p: 0.244). In the examination of the number of workers with noise induced hearing loss distributed by the years spent in this workplace, 14 of the workers who have been working in the factory over 10 years had hearing loss while only 1 worker in the group with up to 10 years of experience was affected. The difference of this distribution was statistically significant (p: 0.002).ConclusionThe data of this study shows that there is a positive correlation between hearing loss incidence and years of service in a loud workplace. Particularly, individuals with over 10 years of experience show distinctive increase of hearing loss. Years spent in a loud workplace and accordingly, the amount of time being exposed to loud noise, increase the noise induced hearing loss

Objective: To investigate the frequency of urinary incontinence that appears in women in their declining years and to what degree their qualities of life are affected by this problem. Material and Methods: Study was conducted with women over 40 years in 5 clinics that serve affiliated to Kirklareli provincial centre between the October 2007 and January 2008. A 27-question- questionaire developed by the researcher in order to define socio-demographic characteristics, risk factors that cause incontinence was applied. Furthermore, Incontinence Quality of Life questionnaire (IQOL) was also applied to women who had a complaint of urinary incontinence for defining the level of quality of life of the women. Results: Urinary continence was found 48.3% of the women population over 40 years that researched. We showed that the quality of life of the women with urinary incontinence did not affected that much. It was found out that the rise in age, birth number, and body mass index in women with incontinence resulted in significant declining in quality of life of these women. We also shown that quality of life of women with incontinence did not affected by the lenght of the urinary incontinence symptom process. Conclusion: Although, we estimated that the urinary incontinence affect women's life quality in a low degree, it is an important health problem that influence nearly fifty percent of the women over 40 years old. PubMed ID: 18437844Effectiveness of screening Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) antibody to predict tubal damage was assessed in this prospective study which was performed in a teaching hospital between September 2003 and September 2004. The study group consisted of 152 patients who underwent laparoscopy for infertility and the control group consisted of 80 fertile women who gave birth in the same hospital. CT antibody levels were measured by IFA (Indirect Fluorescence Assay for CT). Adhesions were defined by Gomel's classification system. Rate of seropositivity of CT was 34.6% in the study group and 22.5% in the control group (p>0.05). In the study group, the sensitivity, specifity, positive predictive and negative predictive values of CT positivity for tubal damage were 40%, 69.5%, 50% and 60.2% respectively. In the infertile group, the rate of tubal adhesion in the CT positive group was 50% and in the CT negative group it was 39.7% (p>0.05). However, there was a positive correlation between the severity of tubo-peritoneal adhesions and seropositivity for CT. In this study, we found out that tubo-peritoneal adhesions could not be predicted by the presence of CT inserum. There was a positive correlation between high CT seropositivity and high degree of adhesions

The Influence of the Turkish Anti-Tobacco Law on Primary School Children in Edirne

Objective: The Turkish anti-tobacco law was accepted and effectuated in 1996. All forms of cigarette advertising, the sale of tobacco products to persons under the age of 18 and smoking in public institutions were all restricted. In this paper, we aimed to evaluate the influence of the Turkish anti-tobacco law on children for the periods before the law, after three years and after 10 years. Material and Methods: A self-completed questionnaire was distributed among primary school children. This included questions about the children’s smoking habits, their opinions of parents’ and teachers’ smoking habits, tobacco use in public places and the recognition rate of 16 food, drink, cigarette and toothpaste logos and brand names. The first, second and third applications of the questionnaire were performed with students who attended the same classes in the same primary schools, accounting for 772 children in June 1996, 1,157 children in February 1999 and 719 children in June 2006.Results: When these three periods were evaluated, it could be seen that the prevalence of having smoked significantly decreased (13.9%, 4%, 2.2%, p<0.001), as did the rate of purchasing cigarettes within the past week (36.6%, 29.1%, 15.8%, p<0.001). The disagreement with parents’ and teachers’ smoking habits and tobacco usage in public places increased significantly (p<0.001), while the recognition rates of some cigarette brand names and logos significantly decreased, specifically with regards to Marlboro, Camel and Samsun (p<0.001). Conclusion: The Turkish anti-tobacco law has had a positive effect on primary school children in Edirne, and therefore could be a model for other countries
