Cooperative mixing induced surface roughening in bilayer metals: a possible novel surface damage mechanism
Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to study a collective atomic
transport phenomenon by repeated Ar irradiations in the Ti/Pt interfacial
system. The ion-induced injection of surface atoms to the bulk, the ejection of
bulk atoms to the top layers together with surface erosion is strongly enhanced
by interfacial mixing. This process leads to a dense interfacial material, and
broadening of the interface region. The process scales with the relative
difference of the atomic masses. We find that surface roughening and
interfacial mixing is strongly coupled via an enhanced counterflow material
transport normal to the surface which might be a novel surface damage
mechanism. This cooperative phenomenon is active when the bilayer system is
subjected to a high dose ion irradiation (multiple ion irradiations) and leads
to surface cavity growth.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures. accepted in Nucl. Instrum. Meth.
Does the thermal spike affect low-energy ion-induced interfacial mixing?
Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to obtain the three-dimensional
distribution of interfacial mixing and cascade defects in Ti/Pt multilayer
system due to single 1 keV impacts at grazing angle of incidence. The
Ti/Pt system was chosen because of its relatively high heat of mixing in the
binary alloy and therefore a suitable candidate for testing the effect of heat
of mixing on ion-beam mixing. However, the calculated mixing profile is not
sensitive to the heat of mixing. Therefore the thermal spike model of mixing is
not fully supported under these irradiation conditions. Instead we found that
the majority of mixing occurs after the thermal spike during the relaxation
process. These conclusions are supported by liquid, vacancy as well as adatom
analysis. The interfacial mixing is in various aspects anomalous in this
system: the time evolution of mixing is leading to a phase delay for Ti mixing,
and Pt exhibits an unexpected double peaked mixing evolution. The reasons to
these effects are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 12 figures, Nucl. Instr. Meth. B211, 524. (2003
Transformation of five grape rootstocks with plant virus genes and a virE2 gene from Agrobacterium tumefaciens
Summary: To facilitate the development of transgenic grapevines that are resistant to grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), grapevine leafroll-associated closterovirus (GLRaV-3) and crown gall diseases, we developed a rapid system for regenerating root-stocks: Couderc 3309, Vitis riparia ‘Gloire de Montpellier', Teleki 5C, Millardet et De Grasset 101-14, and 110 Richter via somatic embryogenesis. Embryo culture and grape regeneration were accomplished with four media. Embryogenic calluses from anthers were induced in the initiation medium [MS basic medium containing 20 g sucrose per L, 1.1 mg 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) per L, 0.2 mg N6-benzyladenine (BA) per L, and 0.8% Noble agar). The percentage of anthers that developed into embryogenic calli ranged from 2 to 16.3% depending on the rootstock. Calluses with early globular stage embryos were cocultivated with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain C58Z707 containing the gene constructs of interest. The genes were sense-oriented translatable and antisense coat protein genes from GFLV and GLRaV-3, a truncated HSP90-related gene of GLRaV-3 (43K), and a virE2 del B gene from A. tumefaciens strain C58. Twenty independent transformation experiments were performed on five rootstocks. After 3-4 mo. under kanamycin selection, secondary embryos were recovered on differentiation medium (1/2 MS salts with 10 g sucrose per L, 4.6 g glycerol per L, and 0.8% Noble agar). Embryos that were transformed were regenerated on a medium containing MS salts with 20 g sucrose per L, 4.6 g glycerol per L, 1 g casein hydrolysate per L, and 0.8% Noble agar. Elongated embryos were then transferred to a rooting medium supplemented with 0.1 mg BA per L, 3 g activated charcoal per L, 1.5% sucrose, and 0.65% Bacto agar. A total of 928 independent putative transgenic plants were propagated in the greenhouse. All plants were tested for neomycin phosphotransferase II expression by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The presence of transgenes was assessed by polymerase chain reaction and Southern analysis. ELISA revealed various levels of expression of GFLV coat protein in transgenic plants of Couderc 3309. The transgenic rootstocks that have been generated are being screened to determine whether transgenes have conferred resistance to the virus and crown gall disease
Measurement of the recoil polarization in the p (\vec e, e' \vec p) pi^0 reaction at the \Delta(1232) resonance
The recoil proton polarization has been measured in the p (\vec e,e'\vec p)
pi^0 reaction in parallel kinematics around W = 1232 MeV, Q^2 = 0.121 (GeV/c)^2
and epsilon = 0.718 using the polarized c.w. electron beam of the Mainz
Microtron. Due to the spin precession in a magnetic spectrometer, all three
proton polarization components P_x/P_e = (-11.4 \pm 1.3 \pm 1.4) %, P_y =
(-43.1 \pm 1.3 \pm 2.2) %, and P_z/P_e = (56.2 \pm 1.5 \pm 2.6) % could be
measured simultaneously. The Coulomb quadrupole to magnetic dipole ratio CMR =
(-6.4\pm 0.7_{stat}\pm 0.8_{syst}) % was determined from P_x in the framework
of the Mainz Unitary Isobar Model. The consistency among the reduced
polarizations and the extraction of the ratio of longitudinal to transverse
response is discussed.Comment: 5 pages LaTeX, 1 table, 2 eps figure
Earthquake source parameters and scaling relationships in Hungary (central Pannonian basin)
Abstract Fifty earthquakes that occurred in Hungary (central
part of the Pannonian basin) with local magnitude ML
ranging from 0.8 to 4.5 have been analyzed. The digital
seismograms used in this study were recorded by six permanent
broad-band stations and twenty short-period ones at
hypocentral distances between 10 and 327 km. The displacement
spectra for P- and SH-waves were analyzed according
to Brune’s source model. Observed spectra were corrected
for path-dependent attenuation effects using an independent
regional estimate of the quality factor QS. To correct spectra
for near-surface attenuation, the k parameterwas calculated,
obtaining it fromwaveforms recorded at short epicentral distances.
The values of the k parameter vary between 0.01 to
0.06 s with a mean of 0.03 s for P-waves and between 0.01
to 0.09 s with a mean of 0.04 s for SH-waves. After correction
for attenuation effects, spectral parameters (corner
frequency and low-frequency spectral level) were estimated
by a grid search algorithm. The obtained seismic moments
range from4.21×1011 to 3.41×1015 Nm (1.7≤Mw ≤4.3).
The source radii are between 125 and 1343 m. Stress drop
values vary between 0.14 and 32.4 bars with a logarithmic
mean of 2.59 bars (1 bar = 105 Pa). From the results, a linear
relationship between local andmomentmagnitudes has been
established. The obtained scaling relations show slight evidence
of self-similarity violation. However, due to the high
scatter of our data, the existence of self-similarity cannot be
excluded
Measurement of the LT-asymmetry in \pi^0 electroproduction at the energy of the \Delta (1232) resonance
The reaction p(e,e'p)pi^0 has been studied at Q^2=0.2 (GeV/c)^2 in the region
of W=1232 MeV. From measurements left and right of q, cross section asymmetries
\rho_LT have been obtained in forward kinematics \rho_LT(\theta_\pi^0=20deg) =
(-11.68 +/- 2.36_stat +/- 2.36_sys)$ and backward kinematics
\rho_LT(\theta_\pi^0=160deg) =(12.18 +/- 0.27_stat +/- 0.82_sys). Multipole
ratios \Re(S_1+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 and \Re(S_0+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 were determined
in the framework of the MAID2003 model. The results are in agreement with older
data. The unusally strong negative \Re(S_0+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 required to bring
also the result of Kalleicher et al. in accordance with the rest of the data is
almost excluded.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables. Changed content. Accepted for

Measurement of polarisation observables in photoproduction off the proton
The reaction is studied in the
photon energy range from threshold. Linearly polarised photon beams from
coherent bremsstrahlung enabled the first measurement of photon beam
asymmetries in this reaction up to MeV. In addition, the
recoil hyperon polarisation was determined through the asymmetry in the weak
decay up to MeV. The data are
compared to partial wave analyses, and the possible impact on the
interpretation of a recently observed cusp-like structure near the
thresholds is discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. References [8,9,10,11] which were not on the

The electric form factor of the neutron, G_En, has been measured at the Mainz
Microtron by recoil polarimetry in the quasielastic D(e_pol,e'n_pol)p reaction.
Three data points have been extracted at squared four-momentum transfers Q^2 =
0.3, 0.6 and 0.8 (GeV/c)^2. Corrections for nuclear binding effects have been
applied.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. Accepted for publication in EPJ
