Robustness of One-Dimensional Photonic Bandgaps Under Random Variations of Geometrical Parameters
The supercell method is used to study the variation of the photonic bandgaps
in one-dimensional photonic crystals under random perturbations to thicknesses
of the layers. The results of both plane wave and analytical band structure and
density of states calculations are presented along with the transmission
cofficient as the level of randomness and the supercell size is increased. It
is found that higher bandgaps disappear first as the randomness is gradually
increased. The lowest bandgap is found to persist up to a randomness level of
55 percent.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review B on April 8 200
ALACA: A platform for dynamic alarm collection and alert notification in network management systems
Mobile network operators run Operations Support Systems that produce vast amounts of alarm events. These events can have different significance levels and domains and also can trigger other ones. Network operators face the challenge to identify the significance and root causes of these system problems in real time and to keep the number of remedial actions at an optimal level, so that customer satisfaction rates can be guaranteed at a reasonable cost. In this paper, we propose a scalable streaming alarm management system, referred to as Alarm Collector and Analyzer, that includes complex event processing and root cause analysis. We describe a rule mining and root cause analysis solution for alarm event correlation and analyses. The solution includes a dynamic index for matching active alarms, an algorithm for generating candidate alarm rules, a sliding window–based approach to save system resources, and a graph-based solution to identify root causes. Alarm Collector and Analyzer is used in the network operation center of a major mobile telecom provider. It helps operators to enhance the design of their alarm management systems by allowing continuous analysis of data and event streams and predict network behavior with respect to potential failures by using the results of root cause analysis. We present experimental results that provide insights on performance of real-time alarm data analytics systems. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
Mie resonances and bonding in photonic crystals
Isolated dielectric spheres support resonant electromagnetic modes which are
analogous to electronic orbitals and, like their electronic counterparts, can
form bonding or anti-bonding interactions between neighbouring spheres. By
irradiating the system with light at the bonding frequency an attractive
interaction is induced between the spheres. We suggest that by judicious
selection of bonding states we can drive a system towards a desired structure,
rather than rely on the structure dictated by gravitational or Van der Waals
forces, the latter deriving from the zero point energy population of a state.Comment: Minor changes in text, of explanatory nature. 6 pages, Latex, 6

Etched distributed Bragg reflectors as three-dimensional photonic crystals: photonic bands and density of states
The photonic band dispersion and density of states (DOS) are calculated for
the three-dimensional (3D) hexagonal structure corresponding to a distributed
Bragg reflector patterned with a 2D triangular lattice of circular holes.
Results for the Si/SiO and GaAs/AlGaAs systems determine the optimal
parameters for which a gap in the 2D plane occurs and overlaps the 1D gap of
the multilayer. The DOS is considerably reduced in correspondence with the
overlap of 2D and 1D gaps. Also, the local density of states (i.e., the DOS
weighted with the squared electric field at a given point) has strong
variations depending on the position. Both results imply substantial changes of
spontaneous emission rates and patterns for a local emitter embedded in the
structure and make this system attractive for the fabrication of a 3D photonic
crystal with controlled radiative properties.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures; to appear in Phys. Rev.
Photonic Band Gaps of Three-Dimensional Face-Centered Cubic Lattices
We show that the photonic analogue of the Korringa-Kohn-Rostocker method is a
viable alternative to the plane-wave method to analyze the spectrum of
electromagnetic waves in a three-dimensional periodic dielectric lattice.
Firstly, in the case of an fcc lattice of homogeneous dielectric spheres, we
reproduce the main features of the spectrum obtained by the plane wave method,
namely that for a sufficiently high dielectric contrast a full gap opens in the
spectrum between the eights and ninth bands if the dielectric constant
of spheres is lower than the dielectric constant of
the background medium. If , no gap is found in the
spectrum. The maximal value of the relative band-gap width approaches 14% in
the close-packed case and decreases monotonically as the filling fraction
decreases. The lowest dielectric contrast for which a
full gap opens in the spectrum is determined to be 8.13. Eventually, in the
case of an fcc lattice of coated spheres, we demonstrate that a suitable
coating can enhance gap widths by as much as 50%.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figs., plain latex - a section on coated spheres, two

Search for the Flavor-Changing Neutral Current Decay with the HERA-B Detector
We report on a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decay using events recorded with a dimuon trigger in
interactions of 920 GeV protons with nuclei by the HERA-B experiment. We find
no evidence for such decays and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the
branching fraction .Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures (of which 1 double), paper to be submitted to

Measurement of the J/Psi Production Cross Section in 920 GeV/c Fixed-Target Proton-Nucleus Interactions
The mid-rapidity (dsigma_(pN)/dy at y=0) and total sigma_(pN) production
cross sections of J/Psi mesons are measured in proton-nucleus interactions.
Data collected by the HERA-B experiment in interactions of 920 GeV/c protons
with carbon, titanium and tungsten targets are used for this analysis. The
J/Psi mesons are reconstructed by their decay into lepton pairs. The total
production cross section obtained is sigma_(pN)(J/Psi) = 663 +- 74 +- 46
nb/nucleon. In addition, our result is compared with previous measurements
Photonic band gaps in materials with triply periodic surfaces and related tubular structures
We calculate the photonic band gap of triply periodic bicontinuous cubic
structures and of tubular structures constructed from the skeletal graphs of
triply periodic minimal surfaces. The effect of the symmetry and topology of
the periodic dielectric structures on the existence and the characteristics of
the gaps is discussed. We find that the C(I2-Y**) structure with Ia3d symmetry,
a symmetry which is often seen in experimentally realized bicontinuous
structures, has a photonic band gap with interesting characteristics. For a
dielectric contrast of 11.9 the largest gap is approximately 20% for a volume
fraction of the high dielectric material of 25%. The midgap frequency is a
factor of 1.5 higher than the one for the (tubular) D and G structures
Dynamic light diffusion, Anderson localization and lasing in disordered inverted opals: 3D ab-initio Maxwell-Bloch computation
We report on 3D time-domain parallel simulations of Anderson localization of
light in inverted disordered opals displaying a complete photonic band-gap. We
investigate dynamic diffusion processes induced by femtosecond laser
excitations, calculate the diffusion constant and the decay-time distribution
versus the strength of the disorder. We report evidence of the transition from
delocalized Bloch oscillations to strongly localized resonances in
self-starting laser processes.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
