A standardised method for measuring in situ denitrification in shallow aquifers: numerical validation and measurements in riparian wetlands
A tracer test to examine in situ denitrification in shallow groundwater by a piezometer with a packer system used bromide as a tracer of dilution and acetylene (10%) to block the denitrification process at the nitrous oxide stage. During the test, dissolved oxygen, nitrate (NO3-), bromide (Br-), nitrous oxide (N2O) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were measured. To calibrate the experimental method, comparison with numerical simulations of the groundwater transfer were carried out, taking into account the environmental characteristics. The method was tested by measurements undertaken in different environmental conditions (geology, land use and hydrology) in two riparian wetlands. Denitrification rates measured by this method ranged from 5.7 10-6 g N-NO3-L-1 h-1 to 1.97 10-3 g N-NO3-L-1 h-1 The method is applicable in shallow aquifers with a permeability from 10-2 to 10-4m s-1
Planning clil units in primary education from a cognitive perspective
The Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach has experienced a considerable growth and it is being progressively integrated into curricula all across Europe. It is a dual educational approach in which content and language must be combined. This approach introduces a new cognitive dimension which is missing in other language learning approaches by the addition of a new competence: using the language to learn. This study intends to analyze a lesson planning process of a CLIL Primary School Science lesson at a Spanish state school focusing on the cognitive dimension of the learning process of both Science content and foreign language skills. Glory revealed in disk-integrated photometry of Venus
Context. Reflected light from a spatially unresolved planet yields unique
insight into the overall optical properties of the planet cover. Glories are
optical phenomena caused by light that is backscattered within spherical
droplets following a narrow distribution of sizes; they are well known on Earth
as localised features above liquid clouds. Aims. Here we report the first
evidence for a glory in the disk-integrated photometry of Venus and, in turn,
of any planet. Methods. We used previously published phase curves of the planet
that were reproduced over the full range of phase angles with model predictions
based on a realistic description of the Venus atmosphere. We assumed that the
optical properties of the planet as a whole can be described by a uniform and
stable cloud cover, an assumption that agrees well with observational evidence.
Results. We specifically show that the measured phase curves mimic the
scattering properties of the Venus upper-cloud micron-sized aerosols, also at
the small phase angles at which the glory occurs, and that the glory contrast
is consistent with what is expected after multiple scattering of photons. In
the optical, the planet appears to be brighter at phase angles of 11-13 deg
than at full illumination; it undergoes a maximum dimming of up to 10 percent
at phases in between. Conclusions. Glories might potentially indicate spherical
droplets and, thus, extant liquid clouds in the atmospheres of exoplanets. A
prospective detection will require exquisite photometry at the small

Nitrogen dynamics in the shallow groundwater of a riparian wetland zone of the Garonne, SW France: nitrate inputs, bacterial densities, organic matter supply and denitrification measurements
This study highlights the role of interactions between surface and sub-surface water of the riparian zone of a large river (the Garonne, SW
France). Information is given about the role of surface water in supplying Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC ) to the riparian zone for nitrate
removal processes. The densities of bacteria (up to 3.3106 cell m L-1) in groundwater are strongly conditioned by the water moving during
flood events. Total bacterial densities in groundwater were related to surface water bacterial densities. In sediment, total bacteria are attached
mainly to fine particles (90 % in the fraction < 1 mm). Spatial variations in organic carbon and nitrate content in groundwater at the site
studied are correlated with exchanges between the groundwater and the river, from the upstream to the downstream part of the meander. Total
bacterial densities, nitrate and decressing organic carbon concentrations follow the same pattern. These results suggest that, in this kind of
riparian wetland, nitrate from alluvial groundwater influenced by agricultural practices may be denitrified by bacteria in the presence of
organic carbon from river surface water
Diet and BMI Correlate with Metabolite Patterns Associated with Aggressive Prostate Cancer
Three metabolite patterns have previously shown prospective inverse associations with
the risk of aggressive prostate cancer within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer
and Nutrition (EPIC). Here, we investigated dietary and lifestyle correlates of these three prostate
cancer-related metabolite patterns, which included: 64 phosphatidylcholines and three hydroxysphingomyelins
(Pattern 1), acylcarnitines C18:1 and C18:2, glutamate, ornithine, and taurine (Pattern
2), and 8 lysophosphatidylcholines (Pattern 3). In a two-stage cross-sectional discovery (n = 2524)
and validation (n = 518) design containing 3042 men free of cancer in EPIC, we estimated the associations
of 24 dietary and lifestyle variables with each pattern and the contributing individual
metabolites. Associations statistically significant after both correction for multiple testing (False
Discovery Rate = 0.05) in the discovery set and at p < 0.05 in the validation set were considered
robust. Intakes of alcohol, total fish products, and its subsets total fish and lean fish were positively
associated with Pattern 1. Body mass index (BMI) was positively associated with Pattern 2, which
appeared to be driven by a strong positive BMI-glutamate association. Finally, both BMI and fatty
fish were inversely associated with Pattern 3. In conclusion, these results indicate associations of fish
and its subtypes, alcohol, and BMI with metabolite patterns that are inversely associated with risk of

Molecular gas at supernova local environments unveiled by EDGE
CO observations allow estimations of the gas content of molecular clouds,
which trace the reservoir of cold gas fuelling star formation, as well as to
determine extinction via H column density, N(H). Here, we studied
millimetric and optical properties at 26 supernovae (SNe) locations of
different types in a sample of 23 nearby galaxies by combining molecular
CO (J = 1 0) resolved maps from the EDGE survey and
optical Integral Field Spectroscopy from the CALIFA survey. We found an even
clearer separation between type II and type Ibc SNe in terms of molecular gas
than what we found in the optical using H emission as a proxy for
current SF rate, which reinforces the fact that SNe Ibc are more associated
with SF-environments. While A at SN locations is similar for SNe II and SNe
Ibc, and higher compared to SNe Ia, N(H) is significantly higher for SNe
Ibc than for SNe II and SNe Ia. When compared to alternative extinction
estimations directly from SN photometry and spectroscopy, we find that our SNe
Ibc have also redder color excess but showed standard Na I D absorption
pseudo-equivalent widths (1 \AA). In some cases we find no extinction
when estimated from the environment, but high amounts of extinction when
measured from SN observations, which suggests that circumstellar material or
dust sublimation may be playing a role. This work serves as a benchmark for
future studies combining last generation millimeter and optical IFS instruments

Temporal and spatial variations of the absolute reflectivity of Jupiter and Saturn from 0.38 to 1.7 m with PlanetCam-UPV/EHU
We provide measurements of the absolute reflectivity of Jupiter and Saturn
along their central meridians in filters covering a wide range of visible and
near-infrared wavelengths (from 0.38 to 1.7 m) that are not often
presented in the literature. We also give measurements of the geometric albedo
of both planets and discuss the limb-darkening behavior and temporal
variability of their reflectivity values for a period of four years
(2012-2016). This work is based on observations with the PlanetCam-UPV/EHU
instrument at the 1.23 m and 2.2 m telescopes in Calar Alto Observatory
(Spain). The instrument simultaneously observes in two channels: visible (VIS;
0.38-1.0 m) and short-wave infrared (SWIR; 1.0--1.7 m). We obtained
high-resolution observations via the lucky-imaging method. We show that our
calibration is consistent with previous independent determinations of
reflectivity values of these planets and, for future reference, provide new
data extended in the wavelength range and in the time. Our results have an
uncertainty in absolute calibration of 10--20\%. We show that under the
hypothesis of constant geometric albedo, we are able to detect absolute
reflectivity changes related to planetary temporal evolution of about 5-10\%.Comment: 13 pages, 18 figures, (in press
Effect of Kramecyne on the Inflammatory Response in Lipopolysaccharide-Stimulated Peritoneal Macrophages
Kramecyne is a new peroxide, it was isolated from Krameria cytisoides, methanol extract, and this plant was mostly found in North and South America. This compound showed potent anti-inflammatory activity; however, the mechanisms by which this compound exerts its anti-inflammatory effect are not well understood. In this study, we examined the effects of kramecyne on inflammatory responses in mouse lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) induced peritoneal macrophages. Our findings indicate that kramecyne inhibits LPS-induced production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and interleukin- (IL-) 6. During the inflammatory process, levels of cyclooxygenase- (COX-) 2, nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and nitric oxide (NO) increased in mouse peritoneal macrophages; however, kramecyne suppressed them significantly. These results provide novel insights into the anti-inflammatory actions and support its potential use in the treatment of inflammatory diseases
