    Reproducibility of the energy metabolism response to an oral glucose tolerance test: influence of a postcalorimetric correction procedure

    Purpose Metabolic flexibility (MetF), which is a surrogate of metabolic health, can be assessed by the change in the respiratory exchange ratio (RER) in response to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). We aimed to determine the day-to-day reproducibility of the energy expenditure (EE) and RER response to an OGTT, and whether a simulation-based postcalorimetric correction of metabolic cart readouts improves day-to-day reproducibility. Methods The EE was assessed (12 young adults, 6 women, 27 ± 2 years old) using an Omnical metabolic cart (Maastricht Instruments, Maastricht, The Netherlands) after an overnight fast (12 h) and after a 75-g oral glucose dose on 2 separate days (48 h). On both days, we assessed EE in 7 periods (one 30-min baseline and six 15-min postprandial). The ICcE was performed immediately after each recording period, and capillary glucose concentration (using a digital glucometer) was determined. Results We observed a high day-to-day reproducibility for the assessed RER (coefficients of variation [CV] < 4%) and EE (CVs < 9%) in the 7 different periods. In contrast, the RER and EE areas under the curve showed a low day-to-day reproducibility (CV = 22% and 56%, respectively). Contrary to our expectations, the postcalorimetric correction procedure did not influence the day-to-day reproducibility of the energy metabolism response, possibly because the Omnical’s accuracy was ~ 100%. Conclusion Our study demonstrates that the energy metabolism response to an OGTT is poorly reproducible (CVs > 20%) even using a very accurate metabolic cart.     Basketball training influences shot selection assessment : a multi-attribute decision-making approach1

    In spite of the fact that shoot selection is a crucial ingredient of performance in basketball, the judgment and decision making processes involved in it have been largely neglected. In the present work, we explore individuals' strategies to assess the adequateness of shooting (in a simulation laboratory task) in situations varying in the degree of physical defensive pressure, rebound, defensive balance and shooting distance. Our results showed that the four target dimensions have an impact on participants' judgments. More importantly, training influences the degree to which one of the non-obvious dimensions (defensive balance) is taken into account by participants in order to make their judgments. These results stress the necessity to develop measures of shot selection decisional quality beyond scoring rates

    Discriminative decision rule learning is a core ingredient in many interactive sports. This study presents a laboratory simulation experiment (an adaptation of a Go/No-go task) that focuses on the quantitative analysis of three important environmental determinants of shot selection in basketball: physical opposition, availability of rebound and availability of defensive balance. Our results show that these three criteria are incorporated into decisions at different rates. Moreover, the use of such criteria is differentially sensitive to intentional (vs. incidental) instruction. In practical terms, these results illustrate some of the potential limitations of decision-making training by mere task design, i.e., without the coach's explicit guidance

    Impact of cow's milk intake on exercise performance and recovery of muscle function: a systematic review

    Dairy products are thought to improve recovery after both resistance and endurance exercises due to their nutritional proprieties. We systematically reviewed the effects of dairy product intake on exercise performance and recovery of muscle function in humans. A literature search was conducted in the MEDLINE (via PubMed) and Web of Science databases from their inception to 15th April 2018. The initial search retrieved 7708 articles, and a total of 11 studies were finally included after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. All the selected studies were conducted with cow's milk. Whereas some studies found significant positive effect of cow's milk on exercise performance and recovery of muscle function, others did not find any effect. These controversies could be due to the heterogeneity of cow's milk ingestion (e.g., amount of cow's milk, timing of consuming the cow's milk), to the type of intervention, and to the large heterogeneity of outcomes measured.     Circulating Undercarboxylated Osteocalcin as Estimator of Cardiovascular and Type 2 Diabetes Risk in Metabolic Syndrome Patients

    Undercarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOC) could be a biomarker of glucose disturbances and cardiovascular risk. Our study aimed to determine the association between serum levels of ucOC and cardiovascular risk in metabolic syndrome (MetS) patients and to analyse its potential role as estimator of type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk in this population. This cross-sectional study included 235 patients with MetS, 53.2% women, aged 55–75 years. Circulating ucOC levels were measured by ELISA. Cardiovascular risk was determined as Z-score of the diagnostic criteria for MetS (CV-ZS). Linear regression model was performed to analyse the association between circulating ucOC and CV-ZS. A receiver operating curve (ROC) was performed to analyse the usefulness of ucOC as T2D risk estimator. Patients above the CV-ZS median showed signifcant lower ucOC levels. We found an inverse association between ucOC levels and CV-ZS in MetS patients without T2D. Patients with ucOC levels below the 25th percentile showed worse cardiometabolic profle and higher cardiovascular and T2D risk. The area under the curve performed better when ucOC levels were included along with the classic T2D risk factors. The measurement of circulating ucOC could be a useful tool to identify increased cardiovascular and T2D risk in MetS patients without T2D.Junta de Andalucia PI-0207-2016European Union (EU) PI18-00803 PI18-0123

This system allows the mobile nodes of a Wireless Sensor Network to know their location using radiofrequency and ultrasonics. To achieve this goal, a matrix of transmitting anchor points is installed whereas the mobile nodes receive these transmitted signals and estimate the time-of-flight of the ultrasonic signals.     Desde la experiencia docente, se puede identificar que la implementación del modeloEscuela Nueva, en Colombia, no funciona de forma homogénea, ni logra los resultadosesperados en las Pruebas Saber Pro, en relación con los puntajes que obtienen lasinstituciones que adoptan otros modelos pedagógicos; esto obedece a factores relacionadoscon falta de capacitaciones a docentes y estudiantes en el modelo, mayor atención por partedel Estado para su adecuada aplicación y poca competitividad de los estudiantes.Este trabajo investigativo es de enfoque cualitativo y recurrirá a una metodología deanálisis documental, que busca establecer las características de la propuesta Escuela Nueva,sugerida por el Ministerio de Educación Nacional (MEN), en Colombia, a partir de larevisión de las guías y Lineamientos sugeridos por el MEN a la luz de referentes teóricos;así mismo, se pretende identificar las fortalezas y debilidades de la propuesta e, igualmente,dar unas recomendaciones que permitieran mejorar la implementación de este modelo enlas escuelas rurales de Colombia

    Impact of the Method Used to Select Gas Exchange Data for Estimating the Resting Metabolic Rate, as Supplied by Breath-by-Breath Metabolic Carts

    The method used to select representative gas exchange data from large datasets influences the resting metabolic rate (RMR) returned. This study determines which of three methods yields the lowest RMR (as recommended for use in human energy balance studies), and in which method the greatest variance in RMR is explained by classical determinants of this variable. A total of 107 young and 74 middle-aged adults underwent a 30 min RMR examination using a breath-by-breath metabolic cart. Three gas exchange data selection methods were used: (i) steady state (SSt) for 3, 4, 5, or 10 min, (ii) a pre-defined time interval (TI), i.e., 6–10, 11–15, 16–20, 21–25, 26–30, 6–25, or 6–30 min, and (iii) “filtering”, setting thresholds depending on the mean RMR value obtained. In both cohorts, the RMRs yielded by the SSt and filtering methods were significantly lower (p < 0.021) than those yielded by the TI method. No differences in RMR were seen under the different conditions of the SSt method, or of the filtering method. No differences were seen between the methods in terms of the variance in RMR explained by its classical determinants.     Posgrado a distancia: Pastizales naturales en América Latina

    La invitación a realizar un curso de Postgrado para América Latina es una oportunidad para explorar el punto de partida y planificar, con miras a producir una práctica educativa a distancia innovadora, que haga crecer el conocimiento mientras atiende las necesidades integrales de los graduados. La temática de los pastizales naturales, de interés en la región, interpela el manejo de los mismos en tanto cultivo, como producción de forraje, y también la problemática incidencia del cambio climático y sus consecuencias en lo económico, político, social y cultural. Tanto las experiencias previas como los aprendizajes realizados alrededor de la educación a distancia y del empleo de tecnologías en educación superior sirven en este caso para analizar y considerar posibilidades, construir saberes y hacer frente a los nuevos desafíos. La educación superior es todavía un espacio donde la inclusión de las tecnologías innovadoras requiere reflexión, experimentación y diálogo, tendientes al desarrollo de procesos institucionales sólidos y a la vez modernos pero no carentes de espíritu crítico. Coherentes con los proyectos educativos que los países y sus instituciones promueven, estas nuevas prácticas –hipotetizamos- han de constituir el campo en el cual converger y coherentizar los deseos de unidad y de futuro.Dirección de Educación a Distancia, Innovación en el aula y TIC (EAD
