Temperature modelling and model predictive control of a pilot-scale batch reaction system

The temperature control equipment on a pilot scale batch reaction system located at EAFIT University in Medelln, Colombia, is modeled and a new controller is designed aiming at using it in the reactor current PLC-based control system. Some mathematical models are developed from experimental data to describe the system behavior and using them several model based predictive controllers are designed. The simplest, yet reliable, model obtained is an ARX polynomial model of order (1,1,1) that yields a four states ane model for which an explicit MPC was calculated. This controller has a reduced mathematical complexity and can probably be used directly on the existing control system.Preprin

Temperature regulation of a pilot-scale batch reaction system via explicit model predictive control

In this paper, the temperature of a pilot-scale batch reaction system is modeled towards the design of a controller based on the explicit model predictive control (EMPC) strategy. Some mathematical models are developed from experimental data to describe the system behavior. The simplest, yet reliable, model obtained is a (1,1,1)-order ARX polynomial model for which the mentioned EMPC controller has been designed. The resultant controller has a reduced mathematical complexity and, according to the successful results obtained in simulations, will be used directly on the real control system in a next stage of the entire experimental framework.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Aim To determine whether healthcare workers (HCW) hospitalized in Spain due to COVID-19 have a worse prognosis than non-healthcare workers (NHCW). Methods Observational cohort study based on the SEMI-COVID-19 Registry, a nationwide registry that collects sociodemographic, clinical, laboratory, and treatment data on patients hospitalised with COVID-19 in Spain. Patients aged 20-65 years were selected. A multivariate logistic regression model was performed to identify factors associated with mortality. Results As of 22 May 2020, 4393 patients were included, of whom 419 (9.5%) were HCW. Median (interquartile range) age of HCW was 52 (15) years and 62.4% were women. Prevalence of comorbidities and severe radiological findings upon admission were less frequent in HCW. There were no difference in need of respiratory support and admission to intensive care unit, but occurrence of sepsis and in-hospital mortality was lower in HCW (1.7% vs. 3.9%; p = 0.024 and 0.7% vs. 4.8%; p<0.001 respectively). Age, male sex and comorbidity, were independently associated with higher in-hospital mortality and healthcare working with lower mortality (OR 0.211, 95%CI 0.067-0.667, p = 0.008). 30-days survival was higher in HCW (0.968 vs. 0.851 p<0.001). Conclusions Hospitalized COVID-19 HCW had fewer comorbidities and a better prognosis than NHCW. Our results suggest that professional exposure to COVID-19 in HCW does not carry more clinical severity nor mortality

Young Adults Perception and Concept of Psychological Well-being Through Physical Activity: A Photo-elicitation Study

    No full text
Psychological wellbeing is a major health concern today. Several researches and interventions have been carried out seeking to improve it in young adults. It is from there that physical activity (PA) and sport have become an effective means for that purpose. However, even with theoretical knowledge about the effect of sport and PA on psychological wellbeing, there is no research that seeks to know the perspective of young adults on this. That said, the aim of this research is to deeply explore and understand young adult's perception of psychological well-being through PA. 34 participants ranging from 23 to 28 years answered semi-structured devised questionnaires incorporating photo-elicitation as a research method. The results showed that young adults perceived PA and sports as a place where they can develop their psychological wellbeing emphasizing their personal growth, purpose in life and social relationships. In addition, new dimensions appear strengthening the proposed theory such as freedom, self-confidence and personal balance
