An alternative gaze to graduate assessment

The general purpose of this proposal resides in offering alternative evaluation instrument to those generally used at the bachelors or pre postgraduate studies level, which also involves the distinction between teaching and tutoring activities. This proposal is based on the education model underlying a Mexican private university, where these evaluation tools are being tested. It is also based on the research results carried on with both, professors and students at the postgraduate level. The research is aimed at ponder a set of assessable practices related to teaching activities, which are classified under six dimensions: planning, didactic strategies, communication, evaluation, professional competencies and ethics, and values. The proposed evaluation tools are designed in order to allow students to assess teaching performance, based on both, open and close questions, which in turn provide feedback to the teaching and tutoring activities, at the specialty, master’s and doctorate levels

Nanoporous silicon-based surface patterns fabricated by UV laser interference techniques for biological applications

The fabrication of selectively functionalized micropatterns based on nanostructured porous silicon (nanoPS) by phase mask ultraviolet laser interference is presented here. This single-step process constitutes a flexible method for the fabrication of surface patterns with tailored properties. These surface patterns consist of alternate regions of almost untransformed nanoPS and areas where nanoPS is transformed into Si nanoparticles (Si NPs) as a result of the laser irradiation process. The size of the transformed areas as well as the diameter of the Si NPs can be straightforwardly tailored by controlling the main fabrications parameters including the porosity of the nanoPS layers, the laser interference period areas, and laser fluence. The surface patterns have been found to be appropriate candidates for the development of selectively-functionalized surfaces for biological applications mainly due to the biocompatibility of the untransformed nanoPS regions.Postprint (author's final draft

SummaryPatients with limit personality disorder or affective disorders often hinder the doctor-patient relationship due to their emotional conflicts. It is important that the Family Physician recognized in a timely manner such disorders and develop skills for communication and empathy; in order to promote a proper doctor-patient relationship and promptly refer the patient to a specialist. Thus this will prevent chronicity, iatrogenic and stigmatization of the patient, as well as frustration and a sense of helplessness of the medical team

An RVE-based multiscale theory of solids with micro-scale inertia and body force effects

A multiscale theory of solids based on the concept of representative volume element (RVE) and accounting for micro-scale inertia and body forces is proposed. A simple extension of the classical Hill–Mandel Principle together with suitable kinematical constraints on the micro-scale displacements provide the variational framework within which the theory is devised. In this context, the micro-scale equilibrium equation and the homogenisation relations among the relevant macro- and micro-scale quantities are rigorously derived by means of straightforward variational arguments. In particular, it is shown that only the fluctuations of micro-scale inertia and body forces about their RVE volume averages may affect the micro-scale equilibrium problem and the resulting homogenised stress. The volume average themselves are mechanically relevant only to the macro-scale

Using Advanced Learning Technologies with University Students: An Analysis with Machine Learning Techniques

The use of advanced learning technologies (ALT) techniques in learning management systems (LMS) allows teachers to enhance self-regulated learning and to carry out the personalized monitoring of their students throughout the teaching–learning process. However, the application of educational data mining (EDM) techniques, such as supervised and unsupervised machine learning, is required to interpret the results of the tracking logs in LMS. The objectives of this work were (1) to determine which of the ALT resources would be the best predictor and the best classifier of learning outcomes, behaviours in LMS, and student satisfaction with teaching; (2) to determine whether the groupings found in the clusters coincide with the students’ group of origin. We worked with a sample of third-year students completing Health Sciences degrees. The results indicate that the combination of ALT resources used predict 31% of learning outcomes, behaviours in the LMS, and student satisfaction. In addition, student access to automatic feedback was the best classifier. Finally, the degree of relationship between the source group and the found cluster was medium (C = 0.61). It is necessary to include ALT resources and the greater automation of EDM techniques in the LMS to facilitate their use by teachers. This research was funded by the MINISTERIO DE CIENCIA E INNOVACIÓN, grant number PID2020-117111RB-I00
