Thin and thick cloud top height retrieval algorithm with the Infrared Camera and LIDAR of the JEM-EUSO Space Mission

The origin of cosmic rays have remained a mistery for more than a century. JEM-EUSO is a pioneer space-based telescope that will be located at the International Space Station (ISS) and its aim is to detect Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) and Extremely High Energy Cosmic Rays (EHECR) by observing the atmosphere. Unlike ground-based telescopes, JEM-EUSO will observe from upwards, and therefore, for a properly UHECR reconstruction under cloudy conditions, a key element of JEM-EUSO is an Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS). This AMS consists of a space qualified bi-spectral Infrared Camera, that will provide the cloud coverage and cloud top height in the JEM-EUSO Field of View (FoV) and a LIDAR, that will measure the atmospheric optical depth in the direction it has been shot. In this paper we will explain the effects of clouds for the determination of the UHECR arrival direction. Moreover, since the cloud top height retrieval is crucial to analyze the UHECR and EHECR events under cloudy conditions, the retrieval algorithm that fulfills the technical requierements of the Infrared Camera of JEM-EUSO to reconstruct the cloud top height is presently reported.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, Atmohead Conference 201

    Get PDF
We report 185 cases of distal radius fractures treated by closed reduction and percutaneous Kirschner wire fixation. Final functional results were good or excellent in 156 of the 185 cases (84,3%). In view of the results, we think that the method is simple, useful and cheap, and must value its use in the majority of the distal radius fractures

We present a retrospective study of 35 cases of Monteggia fracture-dislocation treated between the year 1990 and 2003. The results were satisfactory in 29 patients, intermediate in 4 cases and poor in the 2 remaining ones. Conclusions: Treatment of this injury must be orthopaedic in childhood. In the adults, on the contrary, the treatment must be surgical and to consist of a stable osteosynthesis of the fracture of the ulna with a DCP type plate. Reduction of the head of the radius dislocation must be always tried by orthopaedic methods since the results like that obtained are better. If it is not possible, the open reduction can be tried, avoiding providing that there is possible the resection of the radial head. On the other hand, diagnosis and treatment must fulfil early to be able to obtain a good functional result

Functional results were good or excellent in 95 of the 135 cases (70,3 %). Radiological results were good in 78 of the 135 patients (57,8 %). In view of the high percentage of both clinical and radio- logical failures observed in our casuistry, we think that the method must be used cautiously, using a careful technique that avoids the complications related to its utilization

Pollen feeding habits of Chrysoperla carnea s.l. adults in the olive grove agroecosystem

Chrysoperla carnea s.l. (Stephens) larvae are important natural enemies in agroecosystems. However, adults feed on honeydew excreted by hemipterans, and pollen and nectar from flowering plants. Pollen is essential for egg production, but to our knowledge, the pollen diet of C. carnea in perennial crops has never been addressed. In this work, the objective was to study the diversity and potential selection of pollen types consumed by C. carnea in the olive grove agroecosystem. For this study, C. carnea adults were captured from April to December of 2012 and 2013, and simultaneously, inventories of the plant diversity were obtained in olive orchards and adjacent scrubland and herbaceous patches. The pollen types contained in C. carnea guts were identified by microscopy and compared with the pollen types in the environment using Jacobs`s second selection index. The results indicated that (i) C. carnea females and males captured in the olive tree canopy visited scrub and herbaceous vegetation patches; (ii) they fed on different anemophilous and entomophilous pollen types from tree and scrub (Olea europaea, Fabaceae, Pinaceae, Cistaceae or Ericaceae) and herbaceous (Asteraceae, Apicaceae, Brassicaceae, Poaceae, Rumex type or Plantago type) strata; and (iii) adults fed not only on flowers but also on pollen settled on vegetation surfaces. Here, we demonstrated that C. carnea could benefit not only from the diversity of entomophilous pollen during the plant flowering periods but also from other pollens that could remain in the environment in different periods. This has important implications for the management of the floral diversity adjacent to the crop. The authors are grateful to the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology for financial support through the project EXCL/AGRPRO/ 0591/2012 “Olive crop protection in sustainable production under global climatic changes: linking ecological infrastructures to ecosystem functions.” M.V. thanks FCT, PostDoc grant (SFRH/BPD/ 119487/2016).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A total of 73 cases of C2 type fracture of the distal radius treated in our Department are presented. A volar pla- te was used as fixation method in 3 cases, Kirschner wire in 38 cases, external fixator in 30 cases, and external fixator plus Kirschner wire in 2 cases. The best results were obtai- ned in the groups of cases treated with a volar plate and ex- ternal fixator associated with Kirschner wire. The isolated external fixator, that at first was the best system of treatment, has turned out to be the procedure that has been accompa- nied by a greater incidence of clinical sequels and vicious consolidations
