    El virus del zika

    Get PDF

Open innovation in the food and beverage industry

    Get PDF
Purpose: The aim of this paper is to extend our knowledge into the relationship between open innovation and firm innovative performance. Specifically, we aim to determine whether the benefits of OI practices are different for Food and Beverage (FnB) firms as compared to those of other sectors. The FnB industry is relevant in terms of employment GDP generation in the UE, characterised by high integration and low-tech intensity. Methodology: In order to achieve our goal and obtain robust results, we consider four open innovation dimensions and four innovation performance measures using panel data (2004-2011) from 10,771 FnB and non-FnB firms using Tobit and Logit models with random effects. Findings: We test and confirm the presence of the classical inverted U-shape relationship between OI and firm innovative performance for FnB and non-FnB companies. However, the optimal number of external sources of knowledge used is lesser for FnB than the rest of the companies. Originality: The article compares the OI effects in a traditional and low-tech industry vs other industries considering four innovation outputs (product innovations, process innovations, incremental and radical innovation)

Factors Promoting Environmental Responsibility in European SMEs: The Effect on Performance

    Get PDF
There is increasing social and political awareness of the importance of developing environmental responsibility at a corporate level. When focusing on issues of responsibility, large companies are frequently perceived to be more responsible for driving climate change and resource depletion. However, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) contribute significantly to the use of resources such as material and energy and produce approximately 64% of the pollution in Europe. Drawing on evidence from “The Eurobarometer 381 Survey on SMEs, Resource Efficiency and Green Markets”, we analyze the environmental responsibility of European SMEs, studying their compliance with environmental legislation and how several factors drive environmental orientation among SMEs. Our sample consists of 3647 SMEs operating in 38 countries. Only around a fifth of the firms go beyond environmental regulations, showing the highest levels of environmental responsibility. We conduct OLS regressions to analyze the factors that affect a positive environmental attitude among European SMEs (internal drivers being more significant than external ones) and then, to observe the positive effect of environmental responsibility and firm’s experience in offering green services/products on performance, although a conjoint effect was not found. Implications for practitioners, academics, and policy-makers are outlined

Analysing citizens’ perceptions of renewable energies in rural areas: A case study on wind farms in Spain

    Get PDF
The promotion of rural development can benefit from the advancement of renewable energies as potential sources of growth and income in an integrated economy. Rural areas have attracted a significant proportion of renewable energy installations, mainly wind energy. Moreover, the development of renewables has been explicitly claimed as a key instrument to support rural economies through job creation, new sources of income for landowners and local authorities, and more sustainable industries with the revitalization of their productive systems. However, the installation of renewable energies can have, in the short and long term, different impacts on the territory. This study explores Campo de Belchite citizens’ perception of the effects wind energy installations has on the economy, demography, and employment opportunities. The Campo de Belchite county (Aragon) was used as a case study due to its wind-farm development. Citizens perceptions on the socio-economic effects and expectations of renewable energies have been explored on the basis of their responses to an online survey. Findings show a great heterogeneity between agents and territories, both in the evaluation of impacts and in their hopes. The management model plays a critical role for achieving its social acceptance. This work contributes with industrial and energy policy insights that call for a more decentralized, participatory and transparent management models

    Get PDF
<br /
