The Einstein Ring 0047-2808 Revisited: A Bayesian Inversion
In a previous paper, we outlined a new Bayesian method for inferring the
properties of extended gravitational lenses, given data in the form of resolved
images. This method holds the most promise for optimally extracting information
from the observed image, whilst providing reliable uncertainties in all
parameters. Here, we apply the method to the well studied optical Einstein ring
0047-2808. Our results are in broad agreement with previous studies, showing
that the density profile of the lensing galaxy is aligned within a few degrees
of the light profile, and suggesting that the source galaxy (at redshift 3.6)
is a binary system, although its size is only of order 1-2 kpc. We also find
that the mass of the elliptical lensing galaxy enclosed by the image is
(2.910.01) M_{\sun}. Our method is able to achieve
improved resolution for the source reconstructions, although we also find that
some of the uncertainties are greater than has been found in previous analyses,
due to the inclusion of extra pixels and a more general lens model.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap
The cognitive organization of music knowledge: a clinical analysis
Despite much recent interest in the clinical neuroscience of music processing, the cognitive organization of music as a domain of non-verbal knowledge has been little studied. Here we addressed this issue systematically in two expert musicians with clinical diagnoses of semantic dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, in comparison with a control group of healthy expert musicians. In a series of neuropsychological experiments, we investigated associative knowledge of musical compositions (musical objects), musical emotions, musical instruments (musical sources) and music notation (musical symbols). These aspects of music knowledge were assessed in relation to musical perceptual abilities and extra-musical neuropsychological functions. The patient with semantic dementia showed relatively preserved recognition of musical compositions and musical symbols despite severely impaired recognition of musical emotions and musical instruments from sound. In contrast, the patient with Alzheimer’s disease showed impaired recognition of compositions, with somewhat better recognition of composer and musical era, and impaired comprehension of musical symbols, but normal recognition of musical emotions and musical instruments from sound. The findings suggest that music knowledge is fractionated, and superordinate musical knowledge is relatively more robust than knowledge of particular music. We propose that music constitutes a distinct domain of non-verbal knowledge but shares certain cognitive organizational features with other brain knowledge systems. Within the domain of music knowledge, dissociable cognitive mechanisms process knowledge derived from physical sources and the knowledge of abstract musical entities
Reanalysis of the spectrum of the z=10 galaxy
In a recent paper Pello et al. reported observations of a faint galaxy,
gravitationally lensed by the galaxy cluster Abell 1835. Deep J-band
spectroscopy revealed a weak emission line near 1.34 microns, detected in two
spectra with different central wavelengths. The line was interpreted as
Lyman-alpha at redshift z=10.0. This interpretation is supported by the
broad-band photometric spectral energy distribution, and by the location of the
galaxy close to the lens critical line for this redshift. We have reanalysed
the two spectra, just released from the data archive. Our analysis includes
allowance for wavelength shifts due to transverse drift of the object in the
slit. We do not detect a significant emission line at the reported location, or
nearby, at either grating setting, nor in the combined spectrum. We provide a
possible explanation for the reported detection as due to spurious positive
flux introduced in the sky-subtraction stage as a result of variable hot

Photometric brown-dwarf classification. II. A homogeneous sample of 1361 L and T dwarfs brighter than J = 17.5 with accurate spectral types
We present a homogeneous sample of 1361 L and T dwarfs brighter than J = 17.5
(of which 998 are new), from an effective area of 3070 deg2, classified by the
photo-type method to an accuracy of one spectral sub-type using izYJHKW1W2
photometry from SDSS+UKIDSS+WISE. Other than a small bias in the early L types,
the sample is shown to be effectively complete to the magnitude limit, for all
spectral types L0 to T8. The nature of the bias is an incompleteness estimated
at 3% because peculiar blue L dwarfs of type L4 and earlier are classified late
M. There is a corresponding overcompleteness because peculiar red (likely
young) late M dwarfs are classified early L. Contamination of the sample is
confirmed to be small: so far spectroscopy has been obtained for 19 sources in
the catalogue and all are confirmed to be ultracool dwarfs. We provide
coordinates and izYJHKW1W2 photometry of all sources. We identify an apparent
discontinuity, m 0.4 mag., in the Y-K colour between spectral
types L7 and L8. We present near-infrared spectra of nine sources identified by
photo-type as peculiar, including a new low-gravity source ULAS
J005505.68+013436.0, with spectroscopic classification L2{}. We provide

Evaluation of the implementation process of urban road pricing schemes in the United Kingdom and Italy
This paper is based upon detailed research that has taken place in the UK and Italy, on the implementation strategies for urban road pricing schemes. In the UK, both in London and Durham, the Road User Charging schemes required new legislation, and were implemented rapidly. The time from announcement to implementation took three years and the schemes were introduced after short periods of intensive planning, consultations and stakeholder networking. In Italy, the situation has been very different. The road pricing schemes in Rome and Genoa were not introduced under specific legislation but rather evolved from access control zones originally implemented in historic urban centres. The incremental introduction of the Italian road pricing experiments has taken approximately ten years.
The paper undertakes a comparison of these different strategies to introduce urban road pricing and the lessons they contain for the development of similar measures elsewhere. The comparison of the different implementing experiences is undertaken using Strategic Policy Niche Management, a method designed to explore, among other factors, the dynamics of the stakeholder networks involved in planning, introducing, marketing and managing radical urban Travel Demand Management policies

Implications of HGV charging for the UK
Road transport taxation in Europe is undergoing a major and radical shift away from fixed charges and fuel duties towards pricing according to distance travelled and externalities produced. Implementation is underway in some states, change being led by national schemes for the freight sector only.
