Dietary intake, age, gender, and body mass index were investigated as possible predictors of perfluorinated compounds in a study population from northern Norway (44 women and 16 men). In addition to donating a blood sample, the participants answered a detailed questionnaire about diet and lifestyle. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) (29 ng/mL), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) (3.9 ng/mL), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) (0.5 ng/mL), perfluorononanoate (PFNA) (0.8 ng/mL), and perfluoroheptane sulfonate (PFHpS) (1.1 ng/mL) were detected in more than 95% of all samples. Of the dietary items investigated, fruit and vegetables significantly reduced the concentrations of PFOS and PFHpS, whereas fatty fish to a smaller extent significantly increased the levels of the same compounds. Men had significantly higher concentrations of PFOS, PFOA, PFHxS, and PFHpS than women. There were significant differences in PFOS isomer pattern between genders, with women having the largest proportion of linear PFOS. PFOS, PFHxS, and PFHpS concentrations also increased with age

Accounting for Communicative Competence via Pragmatics : A Pilot Test of Instruments

    Get PDF
This study reports the results of a pilot-testing project of a video-based pragmatics instrument whose purpose was the assessment of the receptive level of communicative competence of high school and university students in the Japanese context. The instrument was analyzed using Rasch modeling and the results show high levels of item reliability with low levels of person reliability for the sample population. Person logits of ability on the pragmatics assessment were subjected to linear regression (ANOVA) using SPSS as a criterion variable against a set of predictor variables including scores on EIKEN, TOEFL, TOIEC, a 64-item Willingness to Communicate motivation survey, educational year, gender, experience learning in an English-medium school, and time spent in residence abroad. Results indicate three variables to be statistically significant predictors of pragmatic ability: TOELF score, year of education (years 2 and 3 at the high school level and year 1 and 2 in university), and residence abroad

Biomonitoring studies are helpful tools and can increase our knowledge on time trends in human blood concentrations of PFASs: how they relate to emission trends and the potential prenatal exposure for future generations. In this study, serum was sampled in cross-sections of men and women who were 30 years old in each of the years 1986, 1994, 2001, and 2007 in Northern Norway and analyzed for 23 PFASs. Differences in serum concentrations across sampling years were investigated graphically and with significance testing and compared with those observed in our previous longitudinal study using repeated individual measurements in older men in the same years. The results demonstrate overall increasing blood burdens of PFASs in men and women in reproductively active ages during 1986–2001 and decreases until 2007. However, longer chained PFASs were still increasing in 2007 indicating divergent time trends between the different PFASs, underlining the importance of continued biomonitoring. Comparisons between 30-year-old men and older men within the same population demonstrated variation in time trends in the exact same years, underlining that biomonitoring studies must regard historic exposures and birth cohort effects

Slight respiratory irritation but not inflammation in mice exposed to (1-->3)-beta-D-glucan aerosols.

Airway irritation effects after single and repeated inhalation exposures to aerosols of beta-glucan (grifolan) were investigated in mice. In addition, the effects on serum total immunoglobulin E (IgE) production and histopathological inflammation in the respiratory tract were studied. The beta-glucan aerosols provoked slight sensory irritation in the airways, but the response was not concentration dependent at the levels studied. Slight pulmonary irritation was observed after repeated exposures. No effect was found on the serum total IgE levels, and no signs of inflammation were seen in the airways 6 h after the final exposure. The results suggest that, irrespective of previous fungal sensitization of the animals, inhaled beta-glucan may cause symptoms of respiratory tract irritation but without apparent inflammation. Respiratory tract irritation reported after inhalation of fungi may not be entirely attributed to beta-glucan

In some applications the electromagnetic waves radiating from or being received by an antenna are obstructed by some mechanical structure. If the structure is part of or close to an antenna, the obstruction may represent aperture blockage causing increased sidelobes and reduced gain of the antenna. For example, the blocking structures can be struts or masts supporting the feed in reflectarrays or in reflectors. Usually in antennas, the direction of the incident wave is known, so the struts can be designed to reduce the blockage for a given direction of incidence

Uneven distribution of HPV 16 E6 prototype and variant (L83V) oncoprotein in cervical neoplastic lesions

A previous Swedish study revealed that both prototype and variant HPV16 E6 oncoprotein, occur in about equal numbers in high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (HCIN), whereas variant HPV16 predominates in invasive cervical squamous carcinoma. Most of the malignant HPV16 variants contain a common mutation, L83V, in the E6 oncoprotein. In the present investigation, 28 HPV16 positive, invasive cervical adenocarcinomas were collected from a total number of 131 adenocarcinomas. These HPV16-positive cases were evaluated with analysis of the E6 gene, using a recently described PCR-SSCP method for identification of the specific mutation (L83V) in the E6 gene. The results obtained were correlated to findings in 103 preinvasive, HCIN, and 31 invasive cervical squamous carcinomas also infected with HPV16. The HPV16 E6 variant L83V was present in 40% of the HCIN lesions, in 54% of the invasive adenocarcinomas, in comparison to 81% of the invasive squamous carcinomas. The difference between HCIN and squamous carcinomas was statistically significant, P< 0.001, whereas the difference between HCIN and invasive adenocarcinomas was not statistically significant, P = 0.604. Prototype HPV16 and its E6 variant L83V are both prevalent in preinvasive and invasive cervical lesions in Swedish women. However, the obvious predominance of HPV16 variant in squamous carcinomas was not seen in adenocarcinomas. A single amino-acid shift in the HPV16 E6 gene appears to result in a different transforming potential in squamous and glandular cervical lesions. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig

Correction: Volume: 156 Pages: 194-195 DOI: 10.1016/j.resuscitation.2020.05.028 Published: NOV 2020Aim: To determine the type of airway devices used during in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) resuscitation attempts. Methods: International multicentre retrospective observational study of in-patients aged over 18 years who received chest compressions for cardiac arrest from April 2016 to September 2018. Patients were identified from resuscitation registries and rapid response system databases. Data were collected through review of resuscitation records and hospital notes. Airway devices used during cardiac arrest were recorded as basic (adjuncts or bag-mask), or advanced, including supraglottic airway devices, tracheal tubes or tracheostomies. Descriptive statistics and multivariable regression modelling were used for data analysis. Results: The final analysis included 598 patients. No airway management occurred in 36 (6%), basic airway device use occurred at any time in 562 (94%), basic airway device use without an advanced airway device in 182 (30%), tracheal intubation in 301 (50%), supraglottic airway in 102 (17%), and tracheostomy in 1 (0.2%). There was significant variation in airway device use between centres. The intubation rate ranged between 21% and 90% while supraglottic airway use varied between 1% and 45%. The choice of tracheal intubation vs. supraglottic airway as the second advanced airway device was not associated with immediate survival from the resuscitation attempt (odds ratio 0.81; 95% confidence interval 0.35-1.8). Conclusion: There is wide variation in airway device use during resuscitation after IHCA. Only half of patients are intubated before return of spontaneous circulation and many are managed without an advanced airway. Further investigation is needed to determine optimal airway device management strategies during resuscitation following IHCA.Peer reviewe

Reproductive toxicity of seafood contaminants: Prospective comparisons of Swedish east and west coast fishermen's families

    Get PDF
Cohorts comprising fishermen's families on the east coast of Sweden have been found to have a high consumption of contaminated fish as well as high body burdens of persistent organochlorine pollutants (POPs). Their west coast correspondents are socio-economically similar, but with considerably lower POP exposure since the fish caught on the west coast is far less contaminated. The rationale for this was that the cohorts residing on the east coast of Sweden have been found to have a high consumption of contaminated fish as well as high body burdens of POPs, whereas their west coast correspondents are socio-economically similar, but with considerably lower POP exposure since the fish caught on the west coast is far less contaminated. Among the reproductive outcomes investigated are included both male and female parameters, as well as couple fertility and effects on the fetus. A range of exposure measures, including both questionnaire assessments of fish consumption and biomarkers, have been used
