Lithium in a Short-Period Tidally Locked Binary of M67: Implications for Stellar Evolution, Galactic Lithium Evolution, and Cosmology
In open clusters, late-F stars exhibit a Li maximum (the Li \u27peak\u27 region) at lower abundance with age, which could be due either to stellar depletion or Galactic Li enrichment (or some other cause). We have observed a short-period tidally locked binary (SPTLB) on the Li peak region in the old cluster M67 to distinguish between alternatives. SPTLBs which synchronized in the early pre-main sequence would avoid the rotational mixing which, according to Yale models, may be responsible for depleting Li with age in open cluster dwarfs. We find that both components of the M67 SPTLB have a Li abundance lying about a factor of 2 or more above any other M67 single star and about a factor of 3 or more above the mean Li peak region abundance in M67. Our results suggest that the initial Li abundance in M67 is at least as high as approximately 3.0 = 12 + log (NLi/NH). Our high M67 SPTLB Li abundance and those in other clusters support the combination of Zahn\u27s tidal circularization and the Yale rotational mixing theories and may indicate that the halo Li plateau (analogous to the cluster Li peak region) abundance has been depleted from a higher primordial value. Self-similar Bianchi models: II. Class B models
In a companion article (referred hearafter as paper I) a detailed study of
the simply transitive Spatially Homogeneous (SH) models of class A concerning
the existence of a simply transitive similarity group has been given. The
present work (paper II) continues and completes the above study by considering
the remaining set of class B models. Following the procedure of paper I we find
all SH models of class B subjected only to the minimal geometric assumption to
admit a proper Homothetic Vector Field (HVF). The physical implications of the
obtained geometric results are studied by specialising our considerations to
the case of vacuum and law perfect fluid models. As a result we
regain all the known exact solutions regarding vacuum and non-tilted perfect
fluid models. In the case of tilted fluids we find the \emph{general
}self-similar solution for the exceptional type VI model and we
identify it as equilibrium point in the corresponding dynamical state space. It
is found that this \emph{new} exact solution belongs to the subclass of models
, is defined for and
although has a five dimensional stable manifold there exist always two unstable
modes in the restricted state space. Furthermore the analysis of the remaining
types, guarantees that tilted perfect fluid models of types III, IV, V and
VII cannot admit a proper HVF strongly suggesting that these models either
may not be asymptotically self-similar (type V) or may be extreme tilted at
late times. Finally for each Bianchi type, we give the extreme tilted

Self-similar Bianchi models: I. Class A models
We present a study of Bianchi class A tilted cosmological models admitting a
proper homothetic vector field together with the restrictions, both at the
geometrical and dynamical level, imposed by the existence of the simply
transitive similarity group. The general solution of the symmetry equations and
the form of the homothetic vector field are given in terms of a set of
arbitrary integration constants. We apply the geometrical results for tilted
perfect fluids sources and give the general Bianchi II self-similar solution
and the form of the similarity vector field. In addition we show that
self-similar perfect fluid Bianchi VII models and irrotational Bianchi

The Evolution of Galactic Boron and the Production Site of the Light Elements
The Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has been used to obtain spectra of the 2500 Ã… region in eight stars with metallicities ranging from [Fe/H] = -0.4 to -3.0, including the most metal-poor star ever observed for boron. Spectrum synthesis utilizing latest Kurucz model atmospheres has been used to determine the B abundance for each star, with particular attention paid to the errors of each point, to permit judgment of the quality of the fit of models of Galactic chemical evolution. Detection of Neutralino Annihilation Photons from External Galaxies
We consider neutralino annihilation in dense extragalactic systems known to
be dominated by dark matter, in particular M87 and several local dwarf
spheroidal galaxies. These annihilations can produce energetic gamma rays which
may be visible to atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes. We explore the
supersymmetric parameter space, and compute the expected flux of gamma--rays
coming from these objects. It is shown that some parts of the parameter space
lead to a signal observable with the next generation of Cerenkov telescopes,
provided the supersymmetric dark matter has a clumpy structure, as may be
expected in a hierarchical scenario for structure formation.Comment: revtex: 13 pages, 9 figure
Using Line Profiles to Test the Fraternity of Type Ia Supernovae at High and Low Redshifts
Using archival data of low-redshift (z < 0.01) Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) and
recent observations of high-redshift (0.16 < z <0.64; Matheson et al. 2005) SN
Ia, we study the "uniformity'' of the spectroscopic properties of nearby and
distant SN Ia. We find no difference in the measures we describe here. In this
paper, we base our analysis solely on line-profile morphology, focusing on
measurements of the velocity location of maximum absorption (vabs) and peak
emission (vpeak). We find that the evolution of vabs and vpeak for our sample
lines (Ca II 3945, Si II 6355, and S II 5454, 5640) is similar for both the
low- and high-redshift samples. We find that vabs for the weak S II 5454, 5640
lines, and vpeak for S II 5454, can be used to identify fast-declining [dm15 >
1.7] SN Ia, which are also subluminous. In addition, we give the first direct
evidence in two high-z SN Ia spectra of a double-absorption feature in Ca II
3945, an event also observed, though infrequently, in low-redshift SN Ia
spectra (6/22 SN Ia in our local sample). We report for the first time the
unambiguous and systematic intrinsic blueshift of peak emission of optical
P-Cygni line profiles in Type Ia spectra, by as much as 8000 km/s. All the
high-z SN Ia analyzed in this paper were discovered and followed up by the

P2X receptor signaling inhibits BDNF-mediated spiral ganglion neuron development in the neonatal rat cochlea.
Type I and type II spiral ganglion neurons (SGN) innervate the inner and outer hair cells of the cochlea, respectively. This neural system is established by reorganization of promiscuous innervation of the hair cells, immediately before hearing is established. The mechanism for this synaptic reorganization is unresolved but probably includes regulation of trophic support between the hair cells and the neurons. We provide evidence that P2X receptors (ATP-gated ion channels) contribute such a mechanism in the neonatal rat cochlea. Single-cell quantitative RT-PCR identified the differential expression of two P2X receptor subunits, splice variant P2X(2)(-3) and P2X(3), in a 1:2 transcript ratio. Downregulation of this P2X(2-3/3) receptor coincided with maturation of the SGN innervation of the hair cells. When the P2X(2-3) and P2X(3) subunits were co-expressed in Xenopus oocytes, the resultant P2X receptor properties corresponded to the SGN phenotype. This included enhanced sensitivity to ATP and extended agonist action. In P4 spiral ganglion explants, activation of the P2X receptor signaling pathway by ATPgammaS or alpha,betaMeATP inhibited BDNF-induced neurite outgrowth and branching. These findings indicate that P2X receptor signaling provides a mechanism for inhibiting neurotrophin support of SGN neurites when synaptic reorganization is occurring in the cochlea
'Sexercise': Working out heterosexuality in Jane Fonda’s fitness books

The paper is set in the absence of overt discussions of normative heterosexuality in leisure studies and draws on critical heterosexual scholarship as well as the growing body of work theorising geographies of corporeality and heterosexuality. Using the principles of media discourse analysis, the paper identifies three overlapping characteristics of heterosexuality represented in Jane Fonda’s fitness books, and embodied through the exercise regimes: respectable heterosexual desire, monogamous procreation and domesticity. The paper concludes that the promotion and prescription of exercise for women in the Jane Fonda workout books centred on the reproduction and embodiment of heterosexual corporeality. Set within an emerging commercial landscape of women’s fitness in the 1980s, such exercise practices were significant in the legitimation and institutionalisation of heteronormativity
VLT Observations of Turnoff stars in the Globular Cluster NGC 6397
VLT-UVES high resolution spectra of seven turnoff stars in the metal-poor
globular cluster NGC 6397 have been obtained. Atmospheric parameters and
abundances of several elements (Li, Na, Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Zn and Ba)
were derived for program stars. The mean iron abundance is [Fe/H] = -2.02, with
no star-to-star variation. The mean abundances of the alpha-elements (Ca, Ti)
and of the iron-peak elements (Sc, Cr, Ni) are consistent with abundances
derived for field stars of similar metallicity. Magnesium is also almost solar,
consistent with the values found by Idiart & Th\'evenin (2000) when non-LTE
effects (NLTE hereafter) are taken into account. The sodium abundance derived
for five stars is essentially solar, but one object (A447) is clearly Na
deficient. These results are compatible with the expected abundance range
estimated from the stochastic evolutionary halo model by Argast et al. (2000)
when at the epoch of [Fe/H] -2 the interstellar medium is supposed to

Factors associated with self-care activities among adults in the United Kingdom: a systematic review
Background: The Government has promoted self-care. Our aim was to review evidence about who uses self-tests and other self-care activities (over-the-counter medicine, private sector,complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), home blood pressure monitors).
Methods: During April 2007, relevant bibliographic databases (Medline, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts, PsycINFO,British Nursing Index, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database, Sociological Abstracts,
International Bibliography of the Social Sciences, Arthritis and Complementary Medicine Database,
Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Pain Database) were searched, and potentially relevant studies were reviewed against eligibility criteria. Studies were included if they were published during the last 15 years and identified factors, reasons or characteristics associated with a relevant activity among UK adults. Two independent reviewers used proformas to assess the
quality of eligible studies.
Results: 206 potentially relevant papers were identified, 157 were excluded, and 49 papers related to 46 studies were included: 37 studies were, or used data from questionnaire surveys, 36 had quality scores of five or more out of 10, and 27 were about CAM. Available evidence suggests that
users of CAM and over-the-counter medicine are female, middle-aged, affluent and/or educated with some measure of poor health, and that people who use the private sector are affluent and/or educated.
Conclusion: People who engage in these activities are likely to be affluent. Targeted promotion may, therefore, be needed to ensure that use is equitable. People who use some activities also appear to have poorer measures of health than non-users or people attending conventional
services. It is, therefore, also important to ensure that self-care is not used as a second choice for people who have not had their needs met by conventional service
