    Comparison of carbon and opal export rates between summer and spring bloom periods in the region of the Antarctic Polar Front, SE Atlantic.

    Although primary production in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current is not above the world average and carbon burial rates are low, 70% of the world's opal burial occurs in this zone and it has been suggested that blooms of large diatoms are responsible for this extraordinary situation. Here we compare export fluxes during bloom and steady-state situations near the Antarctic Polar Front in the SE Atlantic.In a previous expedition during the austral spring, we observed the development of a bloom that led to the sudden export of particles (Rutgers van der Loeff et al., 1997). Here we report the results of a second expedition to the same area in summer (Dec-Jan), 3 years later. 234Th was monitored in the surface water and in Rosette casts down to a water depth of 500m as tracer of export production in an intensive sampling program within a box of 275 x 375 km.The distribution of particulate and dissolved 234Th was remarkably constant over time and location. Total (dissolved + particulate) 234Th activities were depleted relative to its parent 238U at the surface (234Th/238U activity ratio approximately 83%), reaching equilibrium at a depth of around 190m. This constant depletion corresponds to a 234Th export rate of 1115 dpm m-2 d-1, 35% of the value observed during the spring bloom

    The moisture effect on 223Ra and 224Ra measurements using Mn-cartridges

    Important processes in the ocean can be evaluated with radioactive nuclides, including radium isotopes. An approach for quantifying radium isotopes in seawater with in-situ pumps has been developed in advance of the GEOTRACES program [1]. Precise measurements of 223Ra and 224Ra by means of the delayed coincidence counting system (RaDeCC) [2] are dependent on the moisture content of the medium [3]. In order to verify the optimum moisture content for this new approach, a set of measurements of the Mn-cartridge standards under different moisture conditions was conducted, as this was done previously for acrylic fiber. At a time, an amount of water equivalent to 5% of the cartridges weight was added, and the activities were determined. The variation of 224Ra activity occurs mainly between 0 to 15% of humidity. Under moisture conditions higher than 15%, the emanation efficiency reaches an optimum plateau until 100% of moisture. This result differs slightly from those found for 224Ra measurements using the acrylic fiber (plateau from 30 to 100 %) [3]. The 223Ra Mn-cartridge standard reaches the plateau under 5% of humidity, and above 50% moisture the activity seems to decrease. Considering the counting error (7%), it is hard to state that the effect of the moisture is critical. However, this decrease can be related to the shorter half-life of the 219Rn compared to the time needed to its diffusion through the water film, which could be a reason for the frequently observed lower efficiency of the 223Ra channel of the RaDeCC system [4].     A report on visits of fake clients, pretending to be in need of emergency contraception, to health facilities in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

    To identify bottlenecks in the delivery of comprehensive reproductive health care in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second city, a study was performed utilising volunteers pretending to be in need of emergency contraception. A total of 55 private, Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council, municipal and government health facilities were visited. These consultations resulted in 9 (16%) correct, 1 possiblycorrect and 15 wrong prescriptions for the morning-after pill (MAP); no treatment was prescribed in 30 instances. Public sector health personnel were very judgemental in their attitude toward sexually active teenagers. Although the Essential Drug List of Zimbabwe is quite clear about the MAP, many health providers are not aware of this, and others do not even have/use this book

    Peripheral arterial disease in the elderly: The Rotterdam Study

    To assess the age- and sex-specific prevalence of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and intermittent claudication (IC) in an elderly population, we performed a population-based study in 7715 subjects (40% men, 60% women) aged 55 years and over. The presence of PAD and IC was determined by measuring the ankle-arm systolic blood pressure index (AAI) and by means of the World Health Organization/Rose questionnaire, respectively. PAD was considered present when the AAI was <0.90 in either leg. The prevalence of PAD was 19.1% (95% confidence interval, 18.1% to 20.0%): 16.9% in men and 20.5% in women. Symptoms of IC were reported by 1.6% (95% confidence interval, 1.3% to 1.9%) of the study population (2.2% in men, 1.2% in women). Of those with PAD, 6.3% reported symptoms of IC (8.7% in men, 4.9% in women), whereas in 68.9% of those with IC an AAI below 0.90 was found. Subjects with an AAI <0.90 were more likely to be smokers, to have hypertension, and to have symptomatic or asymptomatic cardiovascular disease compared with subjects with an AAI of 0.90 or higher. The authors conclude that the prevalence of PAD in the elderly is high whereas the prevalence of IC is rather low, although both prevalences clearly increase with advancing age.     Hysteresis at low Reynolds number: the onset of 2D vortex shedding

    Hysteresis has been observed in a study of the transition between laminar flow and vortex shedding in a quasi-two dimensional system. The system is a vertical, rapidly flowing soap film which is penetrated by a rod oriented perpendicular to the film plane.     We study the dynamics of small fluctuations about the uniform state of a crystal moving through a dissipative medium, e.g. a sedimenting colloidal crystal or a moving flux lattice, using a set of continuum equations for the displacement fields, and a one-dimensional driven lattice-gas model for the coupled concentration and tilt fields.     The transpolar drift is strongly enriched in 228Ra accumulated on the wide Arctic shelves with subsequent rapid offshore transport. We present new data of Polarstern expeditions to the central Arctic and to the Kara and Laptev seas. Because 226Ra activities in Pacific waters are 30% higher than in Atlantic waters, we correct 226Ra for the Pacific admixture when normalizing 228Ra with 226Ra. The use of 228Ra decay as age marker critically depends on the constancy in space and time of the source activity, a condition that has not yet adequately been tested. While 228Ra decays during transit over the central basin, ingrowth of 228Th could provide an alternative age marker. The high 228Th/228Ra activity ratio (AR = 0.8–1.0) in the central basins is incompatible with a mixing model based on horizontal eddy diffusion. An advective model predicts that 228Th grows to an equilibrium AR, the value of which depends on the scavenging regime. The low AR over the Lomonosov Ridge (AR = 0.5) can be due to either rapid transport (minimum age without scavenging 1.1 year) or enhanced scavenging. Suspended particulate matter load (derived from beam transmission and particulate 234Th) and total 234Th depletion data show that scavenging, although extremely low in the central Arctic, is enhanced over the Lomonosov Ridge, making an age of 3 years more likely. The combined data of 228Ra decay and 228Th ingrowth confirm the existence of a recirculating gyre in the surface water of the eastern Eurasian Basin with a river water residence time of at least 3 year
